Even if the GBC ThermaBind T200 from Ibico consistently achieves good results, the negative points predominate. On the one hand, it takes a very long time to heat up, even longer to bind thicker documents, which cannot even reach the thickness of other devices and is also equipped without holders.

The following guide explains exactly what a thermal binding device is, what can be bound with it and what you should pay attention to when using it.

With a thermal binding machine, you can make bindings similar to those of professional bookbinders. So you don't have to go to a bookbindery or copy shop, and you can stitch several paper pages together at home with the help of the binding device. The documents can be bound in a similar way to a book. You will need a folder with an adhesive strip on the back. This is the cover and spine, which makes the book look professional.

Several folders can be bound simultaneously in one operation. The operation is simple because only a few handles are necessary. Some spiral binding machines require some force to push the lever down. The device is preheated briefly. During this time, the sheets can be inserted into the binding folder. The folder is then inserted into the thermo binder with the inserted sheets. Heat is generated in the thermal binding machine, causing the adhesive to liquefy, spread and the documents to be stuck together. In the end, you hardly see any traces of the binding. The heat causes the glue and the paper to melt together permanently, resulting in a robust folder.

The binding process takes a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the machine. The bound folder must then cool down slowly. There are special stands in which the bound folder can be placed until the glue has cooled down and the individual sheets are permanently bound. It is included with some thermal binding machines. The technique of thermal binding originates from bookbinding. Here the so-called adhesive binding is used in the production of paperbacks and magazines. This type of binding was invented as early as 1895 but only became popular in the 1940s, when the German publishing house Albatross Verlag in Hamburg published the first paperbacks. In 1940 Dupont improved the adhesive binding process by using hot melt instead of cold glue, resulting in many longer-lasting results.

The sheets of paper should lie perfectly on top of each other before the binding process so that they form a clear line.
