4th place: Peach A4 Sword Cutter PC300-01

This Peach - A4 Sword Cutter PC300-01 is a practical device for everyday office life, where the paper has to be cut into the right size every now and then. With gummed feet, it stands securely and cuts multi-ply without problems. From about 8 to 10 sheets, however, you have to reckon with lint formation, otherwise, the cut is clean and the blade slides easily through the paper. A disadvantage is the missing back gauge.

7th place: Hama EasyCut R320 Rotary Trimmer

For simple tasks at home, the inexpensive Hama - EasyCut R320 Rotary Trimmer can be recommended. 8th place: Genie GH 40 – A4 Lever cutter

The Genie GH 40 – A4 Lever cutter is not recommended for regular paper cutting, nor for people who have higher demands on a paper cutting machine. The small cutting surface, the missing back gauge and the difficult to use cutting handle have a particularly negative effect.

9th place: Peach PC100 4 in 1 Rotary Cutter

The Peach - PC100-10 Roll Cutter is a rather cumbersome device, which is equipped without aids such as a pressure rail or back gauge. The cuts are therefore wobbly and can be made by hand. Positive are the different cutting patterns and perforations that can be chosen. However, this can lead to impractical snagging if you want to push the sliders into the rail.

  • Before buying, you should inform yourself about the differences between lever and roll slitters.
  • Roller machines are more suitable for home use and lever slitters for work - this depends on the purpose of use.
  • Web-fed machines are also suitable for handicrafts, as the knife can be replaced.
  • Lever-operated slitters cut larger quantities of paper and are particularly suitable for long, straight cuts.
  • First, make some test cuts with checkered paper so that you can better assess the blade guide of your paper cutter.

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and established the following test criteria:

  • Cut quality
  • Handling
  • Security
  • Number of sheets per cutting operation

To be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the paper cutting machines. First of all, the scope of delivery is checked. DIN A4 paper is used in the test.

Each machine must cut a total of 150-200 sheets. In the first test runs individual sheets are cut. In further tests, it is checked how many sheets the machines can cut at most without loss of quality.

A group picture of the tested paper cutting machines
This is our test equipment at a glance

During the runs, the solid state of the equipment is assessed for safety and handling.

In order to rule out errors and to ensure that the equipment is not subjected to the stress of everyday use, each test is carried out in several runs.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final mark is then calculated objectively from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on the observation of the current market. In addition to popular brand products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come on the market, our test field will be expanded to include them. The new products undergo the same tests as already tested devices.

Cutting paper is not really magic. However, it becomes difficult when a certain precision is required or large quantities of paper have to be cut.

Instead of scissors, it is recommended to use a paper cutting machine for any work. But which designs are suitable for the different tasks and what should you look for when buying a paper cutting machine to find the ideal one?

A lever cutter on test
A lever cutter on test

The history of paper cutting machines is already several hundred years old. Back then, bookbinders were desperately looking for a way to simplify their daily work. Before paper cutting machines existed, they had to cut every single sheet of paper with knives or scissors.

The first known machine of this kind was the trimming plane, which could be used to cut entire books to size. In the course of the decades, new machines were developed with increasing precision.

Around the middle of the 18th century, a guillotine with a vertical knife was used for the first time for the industrial production of books and typefaces. On the basis of this invention, the machines evolved, among other things, into today's paper cutting machines as used for home use and in companies.

Papercutting machines can have different areas of application. Depending on the type and model, you can use them to make single cuts with high precision or to cut larger masses of paper in just one operation.

Compared to scissors, a paper cutting machine is thus clearly superior in terms of accuracy and working speed. Consequently, it is suitable both for home use and for use in companies. The advantages are particularly evident when cutting paper or cardboard in large quantities.

Adjustable angles and marked scales and formats allow repeated cutting without having to measure the material again.

Web presses are more suitable for home use and lever cutting machines are more suitable for work - this depends on the intended use

Handicrafts with paper cutting machines

Perforate, handmade paper, wave or zigzag cut. Roll slitters with different sets of knives are particularly suitable for handicraft and decoration work.

Printed photos or handicraft sheets can also be decorated in a simple way. Perforations are suitable for self-made tickets or detachable photo sheets. Such knives must often be purchased separately.

At first sight, both reel and lever guillotines fulfil the same purpose, but there are significant differences in their design and their advantages and disadvantages.

A roll slitter
A roll slitter

Roll slitting machines

Here a circular knife is guided over the respective material. In most models, the blade is located in a sheath that is fixed on a rail and to which pressure is applied during the cutting process. The sharp edge of the knife ensures that the material is cut.

Web presses are also suitable for handicrafts, as the knife can be replaced

Another machine that is also counted as a roll slitter is the slitting machine. Here the round blade is replaced by a simple knife. They are usually cheaper. However, thick materials are difficult to cut because less pressure can be exerted on the blade.

Our tested lever cutting machines
Our tested lever cutting machines

Lever cutting machine

The lever cutter, on the other hand, is a paper cutting machine, which is more like a guillotine in design. The blade is fixed on one side of the machine, so the cut itself always starts at the same place. This cut is made possible by the fact that the lever cutting machine has a further knife, the so-called lower knife. This is much sharper than the blade, which is also called the upper knife. There are two different reasons for this. On the one hand, the risk of injury is minimized by the less sharp upper knife.

Lever machines cut larger quantities of paper and are particularly suitable for long, straight cuts

On the other hand, the cutting mechanism consists essentially of the application of pressure by the upper blade. The cutting of the respective material is therefore based on a squeezing principle. The blade is curved in most lever cutting machines. The guillotine principle is used for cutting. The further the blade is pressed down, the more the cutting point is displaced.

This results in a change in the leverage effect and the cutting angle. In order to minimize this process and to enable an optimal cut, curved cutting edges are used. As the leverage decreases, this curved blade ensures that the pressure on the material to be cut remains constant.

Advantages and disadvantages of both variants

Whether roll or lever cutting machine - both versions of the paper cutting machine have both advantages and disadvantages. Before buying, it is important to weigh them up exactly in order to find the ideal machine for your individual needs.

Roll slitting machines are primarily suitable for private use. Due to the exchangeable cutting rolls, different cutting patterns such as a wave or a perforation can be produced, which makes the slitter rewinder a popular choice for hobby or decoration work.

The advantage of slitter rewinders is that they are very safe. In addition, their cutting rolls can be exchanged, which can be very useful for private use

Furthermore, they are considered very safe thanks to the closed cutting head. Cutting injuries are only possible through improper handling. High-quality models also have a self-sharpening blade, which ensures a clean cut even in the long term.

Roll slitters are on average cheaper to buy.
On average, slitter rewinders are less expensive.

A further advantage can be found in the area of acquisition costs. If you are looking for an inexpensive paper cutting machine that nevertheless works reliably and precisely, we recommend buying a roll slitter.

Apart from the numerous advantages, there are also some disadvantages of slitter rewinders. Especially the comparatively large slitting head can be problematic with small formats. Here there is the danger that the slitting edge is covered by the head.

Compared to the lever slitter, smaller compromises have to be made in terms of precision. Since the blade is guided over the paper, there is always a certain risk that the cut line will not be completely straight and that slight wavy lines will appear.

Disadvantages of the roll edge machines are the large cutting head and the cutting edge that is not always straight.

Cutting machines with levers, on the other hand, are initially convincing due to a comparatively higher cutting height and the fact that a wide variety of materials can be cut. While slitter rewinders are generally only suitable for paper, lever-operated slitters can easily handle stronger materials such as cardboard.

In general, the effort required for work is very low thanks to the lever mechanism. This type of machine also benefits from its long service life and a high degree of precision.

If you are looking for an inexpensive paper cutting machine, you will hardly find it in the lever cutting machine sector. Although there are cheap models available, most of them are not very robust and have lower precision. Furthermore, the price often rises rapidly the greater the desired cutting length, since the blade must be of a corresponding length. Compared to slitter rewinders, the maintenance effort is also much higher. Intensive use requires the blade to be sharpened regularly or even replaced. They also do not offer the possibility of producing decorative cutting patterns.

The most important question before buying a paper cutting machine should be For what purpose do I need the machine?

For decorative handicraft work, a roll machine is suitable in any case. If, on the other hand, large formats, abundant amounts of paper, solid or high materials are to be cut, it is recommended to use a lever cutter.

When buying a paper cutting machine you should also pay special attention to the size of the table. Although this is usually stated, it does not always correspond to the real usable area. Therefore, in addition to the table size, you should also pay attention to the specified format to ensure that the usable area actually meets your own requirements.

Furthermore, a cut with a paper cutting machine can only be precise and practical if it is carried out in one operation. Accordingly, you should also pay attention to the cutting length.

A good paper cutting machine is also characterized by marked dimensional scales, rulers and DIN A formats. Thanks to them, precise and professional work is possible. Therefore, make sure that the desired machine has these features.

Another aspect that you should consider is the possible use of the paper cutter by children. If you also want your little ones to work with the machine, it is advisable for safety reasons to use a roll cutting machine in any case.

Although both variants have different protective mechanisms, the risk of injury when using a lever cutting machine is much higher due to the guillotine mechanism.

To make sure that the paper cutting machine of your choice also meets current safety standards, you should look for the TÜV or GS seal when buying.
