With a battery-operated beamer with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels, one shouldn't expect miracles. The Optoma LV 130 provides what you expect in terms of brightness. This is sufficient for darkened rooms, but in daylight, this beamer is not usable. The image itself has a distinct green tint and the representation of the colours seems unnatural. But the LV 130 has an integrated loudspeaker with an acceptable sound.

  • Very quiet
  • Integrated loudspeaker
  • Ceiling projection

  • Green cast in the picture
  • Focusing
  • Colour artifacts at the transition between light and dark surfaces

360° View

Solid mini beamer with an integrated loudspeaker. Unfortunately, the picture is greenish.

Particular feature

The Optoma LV 130 Mini Beamer can also be used as a power bank for charging other devices.

The device

Optoma LV 130 focus wheel
With the Optoma LV 130, manual focusing is performed via the focus wheel on the side.

The Optoma LV 130 LED beamer with DLP technology is well manufactured and looks robust. It weighs 400 g and has a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. It has four rubber feet. The LV 130 also has a tripod thread on the underside. Focusing of the image is done manually via the focus wheel. The four buttons on the upper side are used for the operation. All connections are located on the back of the unit. The available inputs and outputs are:

  • HDMI
  • USB
  • Headphone output

An advantage of this device is that it is delivered directly with a carrying bag. This provides space for the beamer, the power supply, and an HDMI cable.

The beamer has four projection modes: front, rear, ceiling front, and ceiling rear. In addition, one of three display modes can be selected: Standard, Bright or Eco. The LV 130 also has vertical keystone correction up to +/- 40°.

For sound reproduction, the LV 130 has an integrated 1.5 W loudspeaker. According to the manufacturer, the battery life is 4.5 hours.

The Optoma Mini Beamer can also be used as a power bank for charging other devices. The USB port can deliver a maximum charging current of 1 A.

Optoma LV 130 brightness
To determine the brightness, the illuminance is measured at several points.

To measure the brightness of the Optoma LV 130, I measured the illuminance at nine defined points at maximum brightness and white test pattern. I used a lux meter for this. The mean value of these measurements and the projection area can then be used to calculate the luminous flux in lumens. With this device, the luminous flux results with an average illuminance of 85.5 lux and an area of 0.75 m² to 64 lumens. The brightness of 300 lumens specified by the manufacturer could therefore not be confirmed. In well-darkened rooms, this brightness is sufficient to reproduce films, but in daylight nothing is visible.

Picture quality

 Optoma LV 130 test image
The Optoma LV 130 is convincing except for the color display.

In order to compare the image quality of the mini beamers in our test, we have developed a test image. This image can be used to evaluate brightness, contrast and colour representation.

First, I tested the image in a darkened room. Thereby, the image quality corresponds to what one expects from a beamer of this size. In a dark room, brightness and contrast are good enough to display dark images. The colors are very saturated and the image has a clear green cast. This can lead to an unnatural skin tone, especially when depicting people. Unfortunately, the LV 130 does not offer any adjustment possibilities for the colours.

 Optoma LV 130 colour stripes
At the transition between black and white areas there are color artifacts.

The color display also depends heavily on the display mode. The Eco mode is significantly darker than the Standard mode. I couldn't tell the difference between these two modes in the hue of the image. In bright mode, however, the image has a very strong green cast.

Also in all modes, there are colour artifacts at transitions between black and white. These are expressed by colored stripes.

Unfortunately, the beamer is not usable in daylight. Even with the maximum brightness setting, almost nothing can be seen. However, this is not to be expected differently with a battery-operated beamer of this size.

 Optoma LV 130
While large fonts are displayed sharply, smaller font sizes are blurred.

Another problem is the representation of font. Due to the resolution of 854 x 480 pixels, large fonts are still easy to read, but smaller font sizes are blurred. You should consider this if you want to use this beamer for presentations.

The operation of the LV 130 is done via the buttons on the top and is very. The individual keys react without any problems. The menu can be used to set the display mode, projection mode, and keystone correction. In addition, brightness and contrast can be adjusted in 10 steps.

Setting the focus of the image is somewhat difficult. Unfortunately, the image is not equally sharp at all points. If, for example, you turn the focus wheel until the left edge of the image is sharp when the beamer is optimally aligned, the right edge is already out of focus again.

Optoma LV 130 heat
The Optoma LV 130 heats up to 56,2 °C during operation.

I measured the heating of the beamer during operation with our thermal imaging camera directly at the opening of the fan. In our tests, the LV 130 reached a temperature of 56.2 °C. The temperature of the fan is the same as that of the LV 130.

Volume and sound quality

The fan of the LV 130 is very quiet. At a distance of one metre, I measured a volume of 37 dB and right next to the fan, at a distance of 20 cm, the volume is 44 dB. As soon as there is sound in addition to the picture, the fan can no longer be heard.

The sound of the integrated loudspeaker is very high. Bass is virtually non-existent. The maximum volume for a device of this size is perfectly ok, but the sound is distorted at maximum volume.

We have evaluated approx. 40 reviews on the Internet. In summary, it can be said that about 83 percent of buyers are satisfied (4 stars) or even very satisfied (5 stars). Partially (2 stars) or completely dissatisfied are scarcely 7 percent of the users. The average score at the time of the evaluation was 3.9 out of 5 stars.
