2nd place: Brother P-touch CUBE Plus

The Brother P-touch Cube Plus is an overall very good device. It has an excellent print quality and convinces with the almost endless choice of different designs. The easy editing via PC or smartphone is also a plus. However, this also means that you are bound by it and cannot run off and start labelling on your own with the device. With the selection of different coloured ribbons and the excellent menu, the good impression is rounded off.

6th place: CASIO EZ-Label Printer KL-60

The CASIO EZ-Label Printer KL-60 is a decent device for simple needs. The advantages are that it is cheap and fast and the labels have sufficient print quality. The use of different thickness tapes is also interesting for the user. Unfortunately, the display is very small and the menu navigation is not convincing either.

7th place: Dymo LetraTag LT-100H

The Dymo LetraTag LT-100H can be rated as good overall. Advantages are the large display that shows the finished labels in full before printing and the handiness. • If you want to label many short labels, you should print several at once and then cut them apart, otherwise, the wide margin could be disturbing.
  • If the device is not used for a longer period of time, we recommend removing the batteries, as they can leak.
  • There are manufacturers who sell compatible tapes at much lower prices. However, according to the manufacturer's terms and conditions, you risk the warranty on the device if you use foreign material.

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and established the following test criteria:

  • Handling
  • Scope of functions
  • Speed
  • Print image
  • Processing

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the marking devices. First of all, the scope of delivery and functionality is checked.

Handling and user-friendliness of the menu and keyboard are assessed. A wide range of printing options is tested in several runs. In addition, the printing speed is measured as well as the length and width of the printing ribbons.

Each marking device must print several meters of tape, with all possible settings

Test marking device
The testers assess the print quality and functionality of the devices

In order to exclude errors and to ensure that the test is not affected by everyday use, each test is carried out in several runs.

The test criteria are given percentages according to their importance. The final mark is finally calculated objectively from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on the observation of the current market. In addition to popular brand products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come on the market, our test field will be expanded to include them. The new products undergo the same tests as already tested devices.

A marking device is required by tradesmen in various areas, such as retail, warehousing and also facility management. Also private persons often use it for marking hobby utensils.

The printer for labels has a special keyboard in which the label can be entered. This is printed on an adhesive foil inside, which can then be applied to the surface to be labelled with the device. The accuracy is very high, even bell labels can be provided with names in this way.

There are different variants: The labelling device can contain an implemented plastic, nylon or paper tape or allow the letters to be ironed on. Thanks to modern technologies, it is also possible to label metallic tapes. The functionalities of the devices, which have been around for a very long time, are very high today: In addition to the conventional inscription, texts can be stored, mirrored and created in different sizes and formats on a PC or smartphone.

print view
Labelling devices can also be operated via PCs

If you are thinking about buying, you should first consider how many of these functions are needed at all. The fonts are usually printed on the various self-adhesive materials using the simple and efficient thermal direct printing process.

An interesting aspect of the purchase is the possibility of different fonts as well as the printing of special characters, frame designs, logos and barcodes. The latter are indispensable in trade and in the warehouse. Even Braille can be printed with a specialized marking device. Templates are transferred via special USB ports. The devices are usually equipped with an energy-saving function.

  • Electric labellers
  • Label printer
  • Mechanical marking device

The electrical devices and the label printers are modern designs which are required in logistics and trade for the very high number of labelling processes. Although the mechanical labelling device has a somewhat simpler design, it is still considered very practical and is still used in many places. Inside there is a roll with self-adhesive paper or plastic. The user clicks on the print character one by one and the imprint on the roll is made by mechanical pressure. This may seem cumbersome, but it is sufficient for rare applications. These inexpensive devices are therefore still among the classics. However, they also have disadvantages: Setting the letters, numbers and characters appears to be laborious, mechanical printing requires a certain amount of force and sometimes patience. This is why mechanical devices are not suitable when many things have to be labelled relatively quickly.

The areas of application are very diverse. Private individuals use a marking device, for example, for marking containers in which something is frozen or woken up, for exercise books, folders in the home office, rucksacks, bags, shoes, jackets or coats. Clothing is often labelled for school children. In the office, various labels are needed for clear filing and archiving of documents.

No matter whether in the household, in the office, or in retail trade.

Folders, shelves, cupboards and storage baskets are marked with transaction numbers, names of clerks and calendar data. Mailboxes, letterboxes, accessories and packages, doors, signs, entrance areas, tools and writing materials are labelled. In the warehouse and in the displays of retail shops, the goods are given a number and a barcode. Advantages are not only the clarity for the user but also the reading of the barcodes. Above all, the uncomplicated, very fast marking is an invaluable advantage.

First, consider your individual requirements. If you very often have to do a lot of marking in the commercial sector, you will not be happy with a simple mechanical device.

However, if you really only need to mark some household items and clothing for private use, you don't need an expensive high-tech device. Another distinction concerns the type of keyboard: There are devices for private users with an ABC layout.

ABC layout for a labeling device.
ABC layout for a labeling device.

Here the letters are arranged alphabetically. For all other people who regularly write with ten fingers on the PC, a variant with QWERTY keyboard is recommended. Of course, the price also plays a role.

QUERTZ layout on a labeling device.
QUERTZ-Layout on a labeling device.

Commercial users will quickly calculate that even a high-quality, more expensive marking device will quickly pay for itself if used daily and frequently. Private users or even small dealers, who label less frequently, weigh the features and quality against the price.

Do not necessarily look for the cheapest device, otherwise, you will be annoyed by frustrating shortcomings when using it. You can look around for the right lettering device from the manufacturers. Leading suppliers are among others:

  • Dymo
  • Brother
  • Casio
  • Epson

An important consideration when buying is probably whether you visit a stationary specialist dealer or search online for the ideal labelling device. You can get more information about the individual device at a glance and can also compare several devices and suppliers more easily.

Furthermore, online purchasing is often cheaper, and you can have the device delivered to your office or home. In local retail stores you would, of course, have the opportunity to try out a labelling device, which is important for some people.

However, experience shows that not every retailer carries every labelling device. On the Internet, on the other hand, the selection is impressively large.

The robust quality is considered the main feature of high-quality marking devices. This also includes the stability of individual letter, number and character components. These must be very firmly anchored, especially with mechanical devices. This increases the durability and at the same time the print quality.

A very precise, accurately fitting design also prevents contamination from too much ink liquid, which is particularly noticeable with narrow rolls. The functional scope must be sufficient for the respective application. There are devices with which only letters and numbers can be output.

This may well be sufficient for the private user; such a marking device is extremely inexpensive. Professional labellers, on the other hand, allow you to print all common symbols including €, $, §, @, %, (), [], <, etc.

Robustness, stability, self-adhesive materials, sustainability

Words and short texts can also be formatted. The relatively complex printers of these devices need components of high quality that work well together. The print quality should, of course, be high on various materials such as paper, nylon, plastic or metal.

Last but not least, the user wants lasting print results, i.e. a print that does not fade so quickly. In addition, the self-adhesive material should really stick well. Another focus is on handling. Changing the rolls can be a real patience game if the handling is not well designed, but the manufacturers have also thought about this for premium devices. Overall, the handling must be intuitively understandable.

You will soon find out by comparison that there are very cheap junior devices available for under five euros. You can certainly give your child a labelling device as a gift, as it will help him or her learn to keep order.

Very high-quality devices for professional use can also cost 150 euros. They then offer very extensive features including barcode printing in a first-class, very easy-to-use premium device. There are differences, among other things, in the number and height of lines.

Simpler devices only manage two lines with a maximum height of 12 mm, professional devices 11 to 15 lines with 24 mm height. The print speeds also differ. As a guide, assume a minimum print speed of 10 mm/s at ~200 dpi.

Devices that print better and even faster will, of course, cost a little more. Last but not least, the width of the stickers plays a role, it can range from about three to 25 mm.

The most important accessories are the matching rolls made of the appropriate material. These ideally belong in a storage box.

We have listed the most important accessories for you:

  • Batteries
  • Power supply unit
  • Printer ink
  • Label box
  • Storage box

Labelling devices are available in various designs and qualities. The prices differ accordingly. Before buying, it is important to consider for what purpose and with what frequency you will use the device.
