In summary, the Powershred H-6C by Fellowes is best suited for occasional private use. However, if you have a higher volume of paper, which is more common in offices, you should get a model with a larger wastebasket and a longer runtime. For the office at home, the shredder is also an ideal companion due to its compact design. Positive: It is the only model in the test that is equipped with a child safety switch.

  • Child safety switch available
  • Compact device

  • Small collecting container
  • No extra container for credit cards
Cheap little shredder, the only one with child safety switch.

Special features

The document shredder Powershred H-6C by Fellowes differs from the other models in the test, among other things, in that it has an additional parental lock. This means that the automatic mode cannot be activated accidentally; a sensible safety precaution.

With its compact dimensions of 28 x 33.4 x 11.3 centimetres, the Fellowes document shredder in black is one of the smallest models in the test and with its black housing a real eye-catcher.

Commissioning of the shredder

This shredder offers you two operating modes: "Automatic" and "Reverse". This means that the machine starts shredding automatically when the paper is fed into the input slot. When the shredding process is finished, the machine switches off automatically. You can activate the reverse mode with a switch whenever a paper jam has occurred. Thanks to this, the material to be shredded can be released comfortably and without risk of injury. The reverse switch is also very useful if you want to service the shredder and distribute oil in the cutting unit.

Another noteworthy feature of the Powershred H-6C shredder is the integrated temperature sensor. If the shredder gets too hot during operation, it switches off automatically and damage to the motor is prevented. According to the manufacturer, up to three minutes of continuous operation are possible with the shredder; in our test, the device even only switched off after 3:40 minutes. If the overheating protection grips, the paper simply gets stuck in the feed tray and you also have no possibility to activate the reverse mode. In the test, it took about 20 minutes before the shredding process could be continued. However, you should follow the Fellowes manufacturer's instructions and let the machine cool down for at least 30 minutes. When operating the shredder, remember that the shredder heats up much faster in the middle of summer.

Collecting volume, cut size and additional

Unfortunately, the Powershred H-6C did not really stand out positively in the endurance test in terms of speed. On the contrary: With a performance of 40 sheets per minute, it was the slowest shredder in the test. The same applies to the collecting container: This has a capacity of just eleven litres; at the latest after shredding 40 DIN A-4 pages, it must be emptied. The viewing window, through which the current filling level can be seen at all times, is very pleasing in the test. The shredder is also particularly compact so that it can also find a place in small offices. A4 sheets of paper are shredded into strips measuring 4 x 35 millimetres. So if you want to shred confidential files, this model is ideal, because after shredding you definitely can't read anything anymore. It's just a pity that staples have to be removed laboriously before shredding. The additional warranty that can be activated during online registration is of twelve months for the actual device. The producer even grants a warranty of 36 months for the cutting unit.

In order to be able to use the additional warranty in case of doubt, one should in any case strictly follow the instruction manual. Thus, the manufacturer explicitly points out that CDs and DVDs must not be shredded in the shredder; credit cards, however, are no problem.
