For KODAK - Mini 2 HD, it must be taken into consideration that not only photo paper but also cartridges are required for further use. Although these are sold together with the pictures, the price for the photo pictures including the cartridge is significantly higher than with other photo printers. This also increases the cost per photo. These are about 0,75€. With comparable printers they are with approx. 0,50€ per expression. Anyone who thinks that the higher price also improves the photo quality is wrong. The print quality is insufficient. Also worth mentioning is the app from KODAK. In comparison, this app is very user-unfriendly and not functional. Moreover, it is not adapted to the latest smartphones.
The KODAK - Mini 2 HD contains 8 pictures in the scope of supply. Since a suitable cartridge is also required for printing the images, this is also included in the scope of delivery. The cartridge has a suitable range of 8 images. The price of these packs is slightly higher than for the other devices in the test. For 20 pictures incl. the cartridge you have to expect costs of about 15€. Thus, the price per picture is approximately 0,75€. The pictures have a size of 5.4 x 8.6 cm and are therefore slightly larger than the pictures of the HP, Canon and Polaroid ZIP printers. The printer has a size of 13,2 x 7,8 x 2,5 cm and is only slightly bigger than the other printers with a weight of approximately 249 g. Also included is a USB charging cable (USB A to Micro-USB) with which the printer can be charged.
First, the photo printer must be charged. All you need to do is to plug the supplied cable into a USB port on your computer. Of course, the printer can also be charged on a normal power supply with an additional power supply unit. Whether the device is already fully charged can be seen from the green light next to the USB socket. If this light is still red, the photo printer is not yet charged. However, the photo printer can also be used if it has not yet been fully charged for the first time. As the process progresses, the on/off switch must be pressed until a white light illuminates. Now the printer is switched on. The printer images are already inserted in the printer.
The associated mobile application Kodak Mini Shot can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and Google Play. Registration is not required. The smartphone must then be connected to the printer via Bluetooth. An NFC connection is also possible. The Bluetooth connection is always activated on the photo printer when the printer is switched on. As soon as the smartphone is successfully connected to the photo printer, a Bluetooth indicator light on the printer lights up.
The app must be given permission to access the photos on the smartphone. Without this permission, the app will not work optimally. Photos from the gallery can then be selected directly in the Kodak Mini Shot App. A major drawback is that for unknown reasons, not all images in the gallery will be displayed in the KODAK app. So only a few photos can be printed and possibly not the desired image. This is a significant drawback. The app also has its own camera function. Once in the editing mode, there is a button in the upper left corner which allows you to print directly.
Most users will print their photos directly from their smartphone. It is also possible to sign in to the app using Facebook, Instagram and Google Photos. This allows you to directly access and print all Instagram or Google Photos albums without going through the smartphone gallery. If the printer is connected at this time, the image is usually printed within 63 seconds.
Quality of Photos
The printer prints using 4Pass printing technology. This is to increase photo quality. However, this also means that cartridges have to be changed again and again with this printer. This is not the case with the other photo printers. The cartridges can always be purchased together with the photo paper. However, this increases the price of the photos if they are to be purchased. The printer comes with a cartridge that is sufficient for 8 photos.
The biggest problem of the printer is the format size and the associated function in the app, which is pretty bad. As with any app, a bit of the image is always cut off, so it fits perfectly on the photo paper. This printer, however, cuts a comparatively large amount. Another possible reason for this is the image format, which has a longer page than comparable printers. Another reason is the automatic cropping. The Kodak printer caused problems scaling images. For example, the AskGeorge logo did not have the correct image size.
Compared to other printers, the photo quality is below average. The photos appear much too bright, so the colors don't look the same as in the original pictures. The average printing time is just over a minute, which is above average.
