The Kiipix Fotodrucker Jet Black is a slightly different photo printer. Printing with this machine is more difficult, even if the manufacturer wants to suggest something different. The device is more like an instant camera because the printer takes a picture of the smartphone screen and prints it. The image quality is not reliably good. We cannot recommend this product.
The Kiipix Photo Printer Jet Black is more like an instant camera than a photo printer. Unlike the other photo printers tested, this model is very special. One completely uses this printer without power, battery or a battery and an app. The printer is operated completely manually. The biggest advantage is obvious. So it seems that you can print at any time. However, one must keep in mind that a smartphone and photo paper are still necessary for printing.
The printer is comparatively large with dimensions of 14.5 x 13 x 5.5 cm, but with a weight of 175 g, it is very light. In addition to the printer, 10 Polaroid images for printing are included in the scope of delivery. 20 pictures can be bought for about 15€. This results in a price of 0,75€ per picture. This is a comparatively high price. Cartridges or ink do not have to be bought with the Polaroid printer.
At the beginning it is necessary, as with the other printers, to insert the photo paper into the tray provided for this purpose. The tray is located in at the bottom of the machine and can be opened easily. Then the device has to be turned around again and a kind of platform for the smartphone has to be created. This printer takes a photo of the picture on the smartphone and prints it out. The mobile phone must then be placed upside down on this platform so that the photo printer can take a picture of the smartphone screen.
The scaling of the image depends very much on the size of the smartphone screen. With larger smartphones, such as the new iPhones, a large part of the screen is always cut off. The photo printer can then not print the entire image, but only the section that is in the frame. The image must then be scaled to the right size on the smartphone, which is not always possible.
In order to see which section of the picture is really then on the photo, you have to look awkwardly under the smartphone. It can also often happen that the picture is crooked because the smartphone is also crooked. This cannot happen with the other printers. If the smartphone is perfectly aligned, a switch on the side must be pressed down. This is the trigger for the built-in camera. At this moment it takes a picture of the smartphone screen in the selected area. As a second step, turn a knob clockwise until the image comes out of the printer. These two steps take about 30 seconds. However, the image is not ready at this time. It has to develop for about 1 minute until it is completely finished.
The quality of the photos could not convince in our test at all. You can see that this photo printer only takes one picture of the smartphone screen. This makes the images particularly dark. However, there are certainly some people who like this look.
What is more disturbing is a mistake that is not intentional and not specifically due to the Polaroid images themselves. Often it happened that the pictures could not be created as desired (see picture). The Polaroid image then remained completely white. A white spot remained in the left corner of the images where printing worked (see image).
In summary, it can be said that with this printer no reliably good image quality can be guaranteed. The reason for this is probably the printing process.
We have evaluated almost 50 reviews on the Internet. In summary, it can be said that about 65 percent of buyers are satisfied (4 stars) or even very satisfied (5 stars). Partially (2 stars) or completely dissatisfied are scarcely 25 per cent of the users. The average score at the time of the evaluation was 3.7 out of 5 stars.
The following points were positively noted:
- Polaroid images can be printed directly from the smartphone
- No power, battery, Bluetooth or Internet connection required
The following points were noted negatively:
- Rather an instant camera and no photo printer
- The first printouts are usually not successful
