With the HP - Sprocket Photo Printer you got a little photo printer that's really fun. The photo quality is already good for such a small printer. In combination with the feature-rich app, you can do a lot with the printer. The corresponding pictures from HP are nice because they can easily be pasted into a photo album. The photos are printed within only 48 seconds, which is a pretty good value.
The HP - Sprocket Photo Printer prints on special paper. Included in the delivery there are 10 pictures with a self-adhesive back. So it is very easy to peel off a foil from the back and glue the picture onto a suitable surface, such as a photo album. The pictures have a size of 5 x 7.6 cm. They can be bought in a package of 20 pieces for 10€ and in a package of 50 pieces for about 25€. The price per picture is about 0,50€. This is in comparison with the other printers a good value. These photo packs of HP with the pictures with self-adhesive back also fit in every other printer that supports the picture format 5 x 7.6 cm. The photo printer itself is hardly bigger than the photos. The dimensions are 11.7 x 8 x 2.5 cm with a very handy weight of 172 g. The photo printer is also very small. The pictures are printed without ink using the ZINK printing process. There is no need to worry about cartridges or ink. Also included is a USB charging cable (USB A to Micro-USB) with which the printer can be charged. Optionally there is also a Premium-Version of this printer, which comes with a matching case and a chain of lights to hang up the printed pictures.
First, the photo printer must be charged. All you need to do is plug the supplied cable into a USB port on your computer. Of course, the printer can also be charged on a normal power supply with an additional power supply unit. The green light above the Word Charge indicates whether the device is already fully charged. If this light is still red, the photo printer is not yet charged. The light is orange for medium charge and green for a full charge. However, the photo printer can also be used if it has not yet been fully charged for the first time. As it progresses, the on/off switch must be pressed for a few seconds. Now the printer is switched on. Then the photo paper must be inserted: with the blue barcode and the paper logos facing down.
The associated HP sprocket app can be easily downloaded from the App Store by scanning a barcode that is included in the package. The app is available from Apple's Store and Google Play. In addition to the iPhone, there is also an iPad version. Registration is not necessary. The smartphone must then be connected to the photo printer via Bluetooth. The Bluetooth connection is always activated on the printer when the printer is switched on. The model is equipped with the latest Bluetooth version 5.0, but in our test, we had some connection problems. The connection can be made from different smartphones so that you can share a printer with your friends. Nevertheless, the app from HP has to be installed on every smartphone.
The app must be given permission to access the photos on the smartphone. Without this permission, the app will not work. All photos from the gallery can then be selected directly in the HP Sprocket App. In addition, the app requires access to the location of the smartphone and to the microphone. However, these two permissions can be withdrawn from the app after the initial installation in the smartphone settings. Then the app still works perfectly.
Most users will print their photos directly from the smartphone. It is also possible to log in to the app via Facebook, Instagram, and Google Photos. This way you can directly access and print all Instagram or Google Photos albums without having to go through the smartphone gallery.
The HP Sprocket App is definitely the most versatile and best mobile printer app. The app also allows you to edit images just before printing. Stickers, text, photo frame filters and another image editing like brightness or saturation settings can be done. It is also possible to divide an image into four or nine small images. This allows a large photo to be perfectly composed of four small images. Collages are also possible. With the HP Sprocket App, you can also indulge in memories. To do this, use the HP Sprocket app to scan your printed image and the app will show you more photos of you on your smartphone from the day you took the printed photo. You can then easily share the photos with your friends and family from the app.
The app also contains information about battery status and sleep mode. By default this is set to 5 minutes, it can also be set to 3.5 or 10 minutes.
The printer prints a photo within 48 seconds. The photo quality is good. Of course, the quality of the photos from these small mobile photo printers can't compete with the big professional photo printers for the office. But this wasn't our expectation either. Despite the small size, some details can be seen in the photos. The colours shine a little stronger than on other tested printers. Unfortunately, the edges of the pictures are not printed quite cleanly, but this is also the case with other photo printers and not only occurs with the HP printer. The printer is definitely perfect for funny selfies or quick holiday snapshots.
