How do I get the plastic taste out of the new bladder?

  • Rinse the bladder and drinking tube with warm (not hot) water.
  • After intensive use, denture cleaner tablets (from the drugstore market) can also be used.

The correct treatment of a drinking system

  • Do not dry the bladder in the sun, as this will prevent the material from becoming brittle.
  • Store the bladder separately from other especially pointed objects (preferably in a different compartment of the rucksack).
  • The hose should not be bent unnecessarily.

Which closure is the better one?

  • Screw threads can be directly coupled with water filters
  • A folding clasp, on the other hand, offers better cleaning possibilities

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Handling
  • Stability
  • Filling
  • Cleaning
  • Taste

In order to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the drinking bladders. First, the scope of delivery is checked. In the first test runs, the bubbles are filled with the maximum amount of water. Later also with ice cubes.

This evaluates how easy it is to fill the bubbles. Then a first drinking test with all bubbles is carried out. This test focuses on the handling of the drinking tube and the taste of the water. In the further course, the cleaning of the drinking bladders is evaluated. After cleaning, a new taste test is carried out on all drinking bladders. It is also checked how well the bladders can be transported and how tight they are. It is also tested whether the bubbles can be wrinkled or rolled up.

Finally, the bubbles are subjected to a number of hardness tests. In these the drinking bubbles are frozen and dropped from a height of approx. 1 m as well as from approx. 1.70 m. The bubbles are then dropped from a height of approx. 1 m and from a height of approx. 1.70 m.

The three drinking bladders we tested

In order to eliminate errors and to ensure the stress of everyday use, each test is carried out in several rounds.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

Hydration bladders serve as portable water reservoirs and are available in different versions. While a closable and leak-proof water bottle can also be used as a refreshment while on the go, a water bladder in a special backpack can be used.

The hydration bladder can be stowed in hiking rucksacks with a special insert and used on the way without the hiker or athlete having to take a break. With a hydration bladder, you can drink frequently and regularly during your hiking activities.

You can also stay hydrated with a water bladder during sports such as climbing and cycling. The advantages of the product and the different types are described below.

Drinking bladder by Source
The drinking tube as well as the mouthpiece can be removed for cleaning

A hydration bladder usually consists of a reservoir. The liquid (water, soft drinks) is filled into the reservoir. The reservoir is connected to a drinking tube.

The drinking tube again has a mouthpiece with a bite valve. As the term already suggests, the bite valve is opened by a bite. The components of the drinking bladder can be dismantled on many models and reassembled.

The disassembly of the drinking systems is necessary for cleaning.

When the drinking bladders came onto the market, only a few brands produced drinking backpacks. The manufacturers of hydration bladders, such as Camelbak, usually brought matching backpacks onto the market.

In the meantime, hiking and traveling backpacks are available from various brands that can hold drinking bladders. In the backpacks, there is an insert for the drinking container. The insert is usually placed in the backpacks in such a way that the drinking bladders are protected.

The backpacks often have a hole through which a drinking tube can be passed. The combination of a backpack with a hydration bladder insert and hydration tube connection means that the user of the rucksack does not have to stop to drink.

The hydration bladder allows the user to stay hydrated during exercise without taking long breaks. A Velcro strap or a loop on the shoulder strap of the backpack keeps the drinking tube close to the user at all times.

Drinking bladders with compatible mouthpieces and tubes are available on the market.

What is to be considered with regard to hygiene?

If you want to buy a drinking bladder as a water reservoir, you should also pay attention to hygiene. Drinking bladders can, if they are not maintained properly, degenerate into bacterial nutrient media. To prevent this from happening, the articles should be easy to clean.

There are a few factors that influence the cleanability of a bladder. Bubbles are available in different shapes. If you are looking for a bladder that is easy to clean, you should choose a wide opening version.

Due to the wide opening, the bladders are easy to clean. Beside the products with wide opening also variants with screw cap are available. Due to the screw cap, the drinking bladder has only a small opening and is harder to clean.

Salomon bladder reshaped
The Salomon bladder is easy to reshuffle

A drinking bladder is actually flexible and, depending on the model, can be turned from the inside out. The models that cannot be turned to the other side are more difficult to clean. There are also drinking bubbles that are dishwasher-safe and can be cleaned accordingly.

It is advisable to buy a water reservoir, which can be turned to the other side and is dishwasher safe. Due to the above-mentioned properties you can clean the bladder well and bacteria don't stand a chance. Another hygiene factor is the material from which the bladder is made. Models with coatings are available on the market. The Source Widepac drinking bladder, for example, has a very smooth coating to which the liquid does not adhere well.

When you buy a hydration bladder, you should also look out for removable components. The drinking bladders of the brands Geigerrig and Hydrapak contain parts (closure, hose system, mouthpiece, valve) that are easy to clean and can be removed from the drinking bladder for maintenance.

Water reservoirs from Hydrapak, Source and Geigerrig are available on the market, which have a foldable section. These bubbles are also known as flip-top bubbles.

If you don't want a flip-top bubble, but still want a manageable cleaning, you should use a variant with a large opening. For example, the Camelbak Crux has a screw cap large enough for a brush.

Camelbak offers another cleaning advantage. You can also get a bubble cleaning kit from the brand. The set includes a system that allows you to hang the bladder open. Air can circulate through the bladder opening and the rest of the water can evaporate quickly.

The bladders can be cleaned on two sides. When buying a bladder you should make sure that the manufacturer also offers suitable brushes for hoses and openings.

A compatible cleaning system allows the bladders to be cleaned well even when soft drinks or other sugary drinks have been added.

How are drinking systems maintained?

There are drinking bladders that are also dishwasher safe. Drinking bladders that can be washed in the dishwasher should be in the upper dishwasher area. When buying, you should pay attention to drinking systems that are easy to clean. If you have purchased an easy-to-clean drinking system, you should maintain it regularly. Care also includes maintenance and cleaning of the hydration bladders. Drinking bladders do not only consist of the actual drinking bag, which holds the liquid. In addition to the reservoir, there are also mouthpieces and drinking tubes. If you want to maintain the bladder properly, then cleaning and maintenance should also include the mouthpiece and the drinking tube.

Cleaning without a dishwasher

cleaning with denture cleaning tablets
The drinking bladders can be cleaned very well with denture cleaning tablets

Those who cannot clean the drinking system in the dishwasher can also use classic care methods. The drinking bladder can, for example, be cleaned with a suitable brush, a little warm water and soapy water.

If you buy a bladder that you can pull to the other side, you can clean the inside of the reservoir better. If you use a drinking system that is very dirty and cannot be pulled to the other side, you can also use a cleaning tablet.

The manufacturers offer suitable cleaning agents for their drinking systems. A simple Kukiden tablet or a comparable cleaning tablet can also help.

To clean the drinking bladder you can simply fill the reservoir with water (warm) and add the cleaning tablet.

If you buy a bubble that you can pull to the other side, you can clean the inside of the reservoir better. If you use a drinking system that is heavily soiled and cannot be pulled to the left, you can also use a cleaning tablet.

The manufacturers offer suitable cleaning agents for their drinking systems. A simple Kukiden tablet or a comparable cleaning tablet can also help.

You can simply fill the reservoir with water (warm) to clean the bladder and add the cleaning tablet. After a contact time of about one hour up to two hours, you can tip the cleaning solution away and rinse the reservoir with water.

Before using the reservoir again, allow it to dry thoroughly. If you have a reservoir with a flip-top system or a variant that you can pull completely to the other side, then drying is easy.

For single opening bladders, you can either buy dry sets from the manufacturer or use simple clothespins. With clothespins, you can hang the reservoir and stop the opening.

The dryer sets from the manufacturer are usually only necessary with a system with a screw cap.

Cleaning the drinking hose

The drinking tube can be easily cleaned with a tube cleaning kit from the manufacturer. If you have drunk clear water instead of beverages containing sugar, it may be sufficient to blow out the hose with water.

The valve allows the hose to be removed and cleaned even when the reservoir is full.

Cleaning the mouthpiece

The mouthpiece should be taken apart before cleaning. Of course only according to the manufacturer's instructions. You should thoroughly clean the opening of the mouthpiece. A good cleaning of the opening is possible with a small brush.

When you have thoroughly cleaned the mouthpiece, it should be dried and then reassembled. The cleaning of drinking bubbles, in which only water is filled, is relatively simple. For beverages containing sugar, cleaning must be more frequent and thorough.

Care of the O-ring

Many drinking systems have an O-ring. The O-ring is usually made of rubber and is designed to protect against water spillage. The O-ring is located near the hose and can be removed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

It is advisable to lubricate the rubber ring regularly in order to allow the assembly and disassembly of the hose to run smoothly. Food silicone, for example, can be used as a lubricant. In this context, the manufacturer's tips and instructions should be observed.

Drinking bladders can be roughly divided into variants for active use and models that can be used as stationary reservoirs for water. The models for active use are more robust than the variants for stationary use.

They are suitable for outdoor activities where they are exposed to heavy loads. The models for stationary use can be used as water reservoirs for camping, for example. When purchasing a water reservoir, attention should be paid to possible areas of application.

It is important to know whether the items are suitable for sports activities such as mountaineering, trekking or cycling. Furthermore, the products should be easy to maintain and easy to fill. The last point also falls under the user-friendliness of a hydration bladder.

In addition, the bladder should be made of high-quality materials. The water reservoir should have a low weight so that you can carry it comfortably with you.

The user-friendliness of a hydration bladder is an essential purchase factor. You should be able to drink easily from the water reservoir. For example, the models are equipped with a bite valve and have a locking mechanism for the valve so that no water runs out.

The bite valve should not be too large and should be easy for you to use. The easy operation also means that sufficient liquid is provided when biting on the valve. You should be able to drink easily from the bladder.

An example of a hydration bladder with an easy to handle hydration system is the Hydration Engine from Geigerrig. The hydration bladder provides enough fluid as soon as you use the bite valve. The bladder has a sophisticated pressure system.

Other bladders are also actuated by the bite valve but do not supply liquid immediately. Usually, you have to suck on the valve after the bite to get liquid. How much water gets through the valve depends on the valve diameter.

The valve should not be too small or too large. You should not be given a shower immediately if you use the bite valve. Furthermore, the bite valve should not be too bulky or too big for your mouth. If the valves are too bulky you may find it difficult to suck.

If you choose a valve that is too small, you will have to apply a stronger suction pressure to get liquid. This is a disadvantage in breathtaking sports such as jogging or cycling.

There are two different types of bubble closure mechanisms. You have the choice between a Twist Lock system or a lever system. A twist-lock system is opened by turning it.

The fact that you first have to rotate a bladder system to release the lock can be a problem on the bike or while jogging. The lever system is easier to use.

There is no need to rotate to release the lock, all you have to do is operate a lever. The manufacturer Camelbak, for example, works with lever systems. You can also find Twist Lock systems on the Internet that are easy to use.

One example is the Source Widepac drinking bladder. The Twist-Lock system of the hydration bladder can also be easily operated on a bicycle.

If you want to buy a drinking bladder as a water reservoir, you should also pay attention to hygiene. Drinking bladders, if not maintained properly, can become a breeding ground for bacteria. To prevent this from happening, the articles should be easy to clean.

A compatible cleaning system allows the bladders to be cleaned well even when soft drinks or other sugary drinks have been added.

If you want to buy a water reservoir, it is important that you can fill the drinking system quickly and easily. As a rule, all water reservoirs under the water crane can be filled very well.

Also, the filling of the drinking systems at a mountain stream should not be a problem. However, if you use Flip-Top systems, you should not use too shallow water points. The flip-top systems may not be able to be completely filled there.

Hydration bladders for outdoor activities should be robust. It is advisable to choose a model that can withstand weather conditions, including frost and hot drinks. The bladders should withstand harder gaits and be made of high-quality materials. Drinking bladders have welded seams that can quickly become a weak point for durability. It is therefore advisable to choose a tested model that will not burst even when fully filled. High-quality drinking bladders are usually well processed and should not have any durability problems. For example, Camelbak and Geigerrig use thick materials that are robust. If you buy a hydration bladder made of very thin materials, you may have to be more careful with the product. Manufacturers should indicate how robust their drinking systems are in the product descriptions or on their own websites.

If you want to use the hydration bladder for sports activities, then the hydration system should be very light. The liquid already has its own weight and 3 litres of water already weigh 3 kg. The manufacturers have already taken care to produce drinking systems that are as light as possible.

Nevertheless, it is good to compare the own weights of different drinking systems before buying a water reservoir.

A drinking system can still be optimized with certain tricks. For example, you can use clips or loops to attach the drinking tube to your backpack. Many backpacks with a bladder insert already have magnetic clips or loops for attaching the drinking tube.

If the backpack doesn't come with such a clip, you can buy effective clips. Without a suitable attachment for the drinking tube, it would be freely movable and could interfere with outdoor activities.

An alternative is, of course, to leave the hose inside the rucksack. In this case, however, you would have to take a break from drinking and would not be able to refresh yourself during the sporting activity. Some manufacturers, such as Camelbak, Source or Osprey, offer hose mounting options as accessories.

The Osprey and Camelback magnetic clips as accessories offer a handy way of attaching hoses. At Source, the clip may slip sideways as it does not completely enclose the shoulder strap.

If you don't just want to fill a hydration bladder with water, but also want to drink hot drinks on the way, then you should pay attention to the appropriate properties. According to the product description, Geigerrig and Hydra Pak drinking systems are suitable for cold and hot drinks.

Drinking bladders, which can also hold hot drinks, keep you warm on cold days during outdoor activities. The water bladders can also be used comfortably when camping, for example as hot-water bottles.

When you fill a hydration bladder with mineral water or other carbonated drinks, it inflates. This can lead to space problems in the backpack and the backpack can bulge.

A bulged backpack is not comfortable to carry. You can use the bite valve to let air or other gases escape from the drinking bladder. You can turn the bladder upside down and drive the air bubbles towards the hose opening.

This should also work if you turn the whole backpack upside down. If the bubble or rucksack is on your head, you can open the bite valve. By pressing on the backpack or bladder you can let out the gases. You can press until you get some of the liquid.

Drinking reservoir offers various capacities of one litre, two or three litres. Drinking systems with 5-litre capacity are also available. Depending on the manufacturer and model, you can also choose between intermediate sizes of 1.5 litres or 2.5 litres, for example.

Before buying a bladder model, make sure that the bladder with the desired volume fits in your backpack.

products tested

Bubble systems help you stay hydrated during extreme outdoor activities. You don't have to take a long break, ut can drink fluid directly from the bladder through a drinking tube. Well-known bladder systems with well-thought-out systems and versatile properties come from Geigerrig, for example. The Geigerrig Hydration Engine is one of the most versatile hydration systems, but has a comparatively high purchase price.

If you are looking for well-thought-out drinking systems with a good price-performance ratio, you will find what you are looking for at Hydrapak and Camelbak. The Camelbak Crux and the Hydrapak Shape-Shift hydration bladder, for example, offer sophisticated hydration systems.

The Camelbak Crux has an innovative mouthpiece. If you are looking for a hydration bladder that is easy to clean and has a hygienic coating, you'll find it at Source. The Source Widepac offers a hygienic inner coating that is glass-like and does not allow liquid residues to adhere well. The Source Windpac also offers a space-saving way to carry liquid.

Drinking systems from Geigerrig

Geigerrig is a brand under which sports equipment and drinking backpacks are produced. Geigerrig's water bladders offer innovative pressure systems and mobile water filters. Depending on the model, pressure systems and water filters can already be present in the drinking backpack.

Geigerrig's drinking systems are equipped with mouth valves where a short pressure is enough to drink the liquid. According to the manufacturer, the liquid is sprayed into the mouth. Thanks to Geigerrig's innovative mouth valves, the unhygienic and annoying suction on the drinking tube is no longer necessary. Geigerrig offers an effective filter technology, by which, according to the manufacturer, the hydration bladder can be filled at natural water sources. The Geigerrig drinking systems are dishwasher safe.

Before cleaning in the dishwasher, the operating instructions should nevertheless be read and followed. The Geigerrig Hydration Engine drinking system, for example, is suitable for frequent users and all people who want to use filter systems and the pressure pump of the filter bubble.

Hydrapak drinking systems

Hydrapak offers a lightweight hydration bladder with the Hydrapak Shape-Shift hydration system. The hydration bladder is well suited for a sport such as trekking. Wherever a hydration option with as little weight as possible is sought, the hydration system offers advantages.

The Hydrapak hydration bladder has an inner web and is more dimensionally stable than other hydration systems. At the same time, it is very flexible. Hydrapak offers versatile drinking systems and has more than 15 years of experience in research, development and design of outdoor drinking systems. In addition to hydration bladders, drinking bottles and other water reservoir items are also offered.

Drinking systems by Camelbak

Camelbak offers with the drinking bladder Crux a robust article, which can be filled comfortably under the water crane. The water bladder offers a good price-performance ratio and is equipped with a screw cap.

Camelbak is a company headquartered in the United States, California. Camelbak is known as a manufacturer of innovative outdoor products. Bubbles, bottles and other flexible drinking systems are part of the company's product repertoire.

Drinking systems by Source

Source is a brand under which innovative outdoor products are produced. You can also get water bubbles and drinking systems from Source. Source offers special models for camping or sports.

Source itself states that the drinking systems and water bladders are easy to clean. Furthermore, the drinking systems are described as tasteless and durable. The Source Widepac hydration bladder is described as very flat and should fit perfectly into a backpack.

Drinking systems by Platypus

Platypus offers drinking systems and bottles that can be purchased online. An example of a Platypus drinking system is the Big Zip bubble. The bladder comes with a mouthpiece that lets a lot of fluid through. One drawback, however, is that the user has to bite the mouthpiece exactly in order to open the bite valve. Anyone who is a little wrong with the bite will not receive any liquid.

The hydration bladders from Platypus are also available as drinking systems that fit into an outdoor backpack. In addition to drinking bladders and bottles, accessories can also be purchased from Platypus. For example, mouthpieces can be purchased additionally.

Conclusion

Hydration bladders are available with different capacities and in various shapes. The size of the hydration system depends on the space available in your backpack and the amount of fluid you need when you're out and about.

The hiking backpacks and sports backpacks often have an insert for a hydration bladder. Depending on the backpack, there is already a hole through which the drinking tube can be guided from the inside to the outside. It is advisable to purchase a backpack that has a shoulder strap for attaching the drinking tube. If there is no such fastening possibility, for example as a loop or magnet, then the manufacturers of the drinking systems often offer solutions in the accessories area.

The hydration bladder consists of several parts, most of which can be dismantled. A fluid reservoir, a drinking tube, a mouthpiece and an O-ring are components of a hydration bladder. When purchasing a drinking system, care should be taken to ensure ease of use. The mouthpieces are usually equipped with a bite valve, which supplies liquid as soon as the user bites on it. Depending on the manufacturer and model, additional suction must be applied to the drinking tube to obtain liquid.

The mouthpiece should be large enough to provide enough fluid. However, it should not be so large that it is bulky for the user.

The drinking systems should be maintained regularly. Care includes cleaning and maintenance. Depending on the model, the bladders can be pulled to the left or cleaned in the dishwasher. There are also models available with screw caps and small openings that need to be cleaned with a small brush. Cleaning and maintenance kits are usually available from the manufacturer.

In the field of hydration bladders and hydration systems, brand names such as Camelbak, Hydrapak, Geigerrig and Source are well known. The manufacturers' drinking systems offer advantages and disadvantages. Geiggerrig offers innovative drinking systems that are well thought out and dishwasher safe. Compared to other manufacturers of hydration bladders, the drinking systems can be expensive. Camelbak and Hydrapak drinking systems, for example, offer a good price/performance ratio. The manufacturer's systems are easy to handle, but also offer disadvantages.

For example, the mouthpiece of the Camelbak drinking bladder Crux can drip under pressure. But the bite valve is very easy to operate. Source drinking bladders, for example, are characterized by their lightweight. For sports where light-weight and little luggage is advantageous, the Source hydration bladders are ideal.

If you want to make a longer tour with your drinking bladder, you can also use a camping stove. We have also tested these thoroughly for you.
