Nobody really likes cold feet that much, not even the brain. The brain classifies the cold there as a malfunction and then releases stress hormones. The hormones, in turn, can lead to a disturbance of concentration and make it more difficult to fall asleep. However, if thick socks no longer keep your feet warm enough, heatable socks can be the solution. Heating elements are incorporated into these socks, which can be heated at the touch of a button.

Usually, you can choose between three heating levels.

With many heatable socks, the heat level can also be individually adjusted to the desired degree. Although they are more expensive than simple heatable soles, they also provide more power. Because the functional socks optimally insulate body heat and the heat generated and maintain it for so long. The heat evaporates slowly even after the socks have been switched off.

Heatable socks are functional socks, which are equipped with heatable elements and heating spirals inside. These ensure warm feet at the touch of a button. The elements are firmly connected to the socks and can warm not only the feet but also the leg. This fixed connection of socks and heating elements is particularly advantageous because they are not noticeable at all and do not influence or disturb the wearer in any way. Normally, carbon-ceramic is used for the production of the heating elements, which are either powered by batteries or a lithium battery. In total, the socks can be heated for about 14 hours, but the exact duration also depends on the heating level used. When the heating element is not in use, it can be easily removed from the socks in a few simple steps, so that they can also be used as normal functional socks.

The heating elements can be easily medium and high adjusted to the heating levels. This means that the heat can be adapted to one's own sensitivity. Then they need to be replaced or recharged.

However, this also depends on the heat level used. In total, battery-powered heating socks can maintain their heating function for about 14 hours before the battery is empty. In comparison with the battery-powered socks, the battery-powered ones are in the higher price range, but their purchase saves follow-up costs. Depending on the battery used, different types of fibre fabric can be found under the forefoot. These are intended to ensure that the heat is distributed evenly and intensively and is also optimally transmitted.

The socks can, of course, be used freely as desired and actually always when it is cold. Normally, however, they are often used for various outdoor activities to keep your feet warm. Socks can be used for hiking in winter or other sports activities in the cold. But the socks can also be used for other sports such as horse riding and cycling. They can also be used at work and on motorcycles.

There are various heatable socks with special padding. This padding should ensure high wearing comfort, so they are very suitable for outdoor activities. However, there are also various sports injuries or injuries where the warmth of the socks can relieve the pain. The same applies to tension and cramps, which are calmed by the application of heat again.

When buying heatable socks, the manufacturer and the brand usually play only a minor role. Much more important are other criteria such as heat duration or wearing comfort.

Long heat duration

Warm feet not only keep you healthy, but they also increase your personal well-being and have a relaxing effect. That is why it is particularly annoying when the heat suddenly evaporates during a winter walk because the energy is gone.

Heatable socks powered by a rechargeable battery are recommended for as long a warming period as possible.

Many manufacturers advertise with up to 16 hours of warm feet. However, the average heat duration of battery-powered socks is 14 hours. Here it is important to note that a high heating level also consumes more energy so that the socks automatically consume more battery charge. However, they still last much longer than battery-powered heating socks, which last about 5 hours on average.
The heating time can be extended by switching off the socks in restaurants or warm shops, for example. This saves energy and the batteries last longer.

Individually adjustable heat levels

Many heating socks have heat levels that can be adjusted as desired. This means that the heat can be adapted to personal preferences on the one hand and to external conditions on the other. For example, they could walk on a low step during an autumn walk, while a walk in winter might require a higher step.
The different heating levels vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. However, the individual heat levels can be estimated according to approximate guide values. Frostbumps in particular often find the 1st stage to be only slightly warming, despite heating to around 40°C. Energy consumption is lowest at the lowest level so that the heat duration can be maintained for a particularly long time. Many buyers rate the 2nd stage as the most pleasant. Here the socks heat up to 45°C. On the 3rd stage, the socks even heat up to 50 °C, which is why this is often mentioned in the instructions with a warning. The high temperatures can also become unpleasant during prolonged use. Since the energy consumption is particularly high at this stage, the heat duration is reduced particularly quickly.

Combination of function and comfort

The heat in the heatable socks comes from wires pulled through the socks. Many manufacturers provide padding between the wires and the sole of the foot to ensure that the wires do not reduce wearing comfort. In the case of heatable socks, the wires are often attached to the side or above the sole of the foot. This allows both the toes and the ball of the foot to be warmed without the tread being wired.

Even with heatable socks, care should be taken with the material used for the production. Who would like to have particularly high-quality socks, should pay attention to such with a high portion of cotton or Merino wool. The two materials optimally regulate the heat generated and thus keep the feet warm even longer. In addition, the moisture can still escape so that no sweaty feet develop.

If the heatable socks have been used, the battery should be removed and recharged when the socks are battery-powered. The battery must be disconnected from the heating elements and is ready for the next heating operation after recharging. Many heatable socks are very sensitive, so it is best to wash them by hand. However, there are also some models that can be washed in the washing machine. However, these should only be washed in the gentle cycle at 30 or 40 °C. The washing cycle should be carried out by hand. Many manufacturers recommend turning the socks to the left before washing in order to protect them. In addition, no spin cycle should be chosen and no aggressive detergent should be used. Both could damage the socks and impair their durability.

Many people believe that cold feet can cause a cold. And this subjective perception also has its justification. Because if the feet remain cold for a longer period of time, this can lead to a cold. However, the connection between cold feet and colds has not yet been scientifically clarified. Ronald Eccles started a series of experiments at the Cardiff University of Wales. He recruited a total of 180 healthy students and then divided them into two groups. One group had to put their feet for 20 minutes in a bowl of water at a temperature of 10 °C. The other group had to put their feet in a bowl of water for 20 minutes. The participants in the control group simply had to put their feet in an empty bowl with their shoes on. Directly after the footbath, there were no differences between the participants of the groups. However, all volunteers were then asked to observe their state of health for five days and document it using a questionnaire. While only 5 students in the control group suffered a cold, only 13 students in the experimental group had a cold.

In order not to give the colds a chance in the first place, your feet should always be kept warm - for example with heatable socks. These can be turned on if necessary and make sure that your feet stay warm and cosy.

In addition, the latter showed stronger symptoms than the participants from the control group. This observation can underpin the general perception of the connection between cold feet and colds. However, the experiment does not explain why this relationship exists. General practitioner Matthias Frank suspects that someone with cold feet is also otherwise cooled off or, alternatively, generally freezes more easily due to an infection. When the body surface cools down, the blood vessels in the nose contract. This, in turn, leads to reduced blood circulation in the nose. This reaction of the human body should protect it from a further loss of heat. However, the reduced blood flow also causes the immune cells to get worse into the nasal mucous membranes. This makes it much easier for cold viruses to settle there.

In order not to give colds a chance in the first place, the feet should always be kept warm. It is best to use heatable socks. These can be turned on if necessary and provide for beautifully warm feet.
