  • Use the inside of large pots as storage space for small items such as cutlery, rags, sponges and detergent.
  • Often the pots can also be used at home, even on induction stoves, and don't have to stay in the cupboard until the next camping trip.
  • The handles of some pots are not sufficiently heat-insulated, so perhaps have a towel or similar ready to avoid burns.
  • Make sure you know beforehand what you want your camping pot to be suitable for. For example, if you want to use it over an open fire, a pot with extra legs is recommended.

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and established the following test criteria:

  • Handling
  • Security
  • Scope of functions
  • Cleaning
  • Compactness

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the camping cooking pots. First of all, the scope of delivery and functions are checked.

The pots are tested using camping cookers. In the first run, water is brought to the boil. The handling of the pot and safety are evaluated. A thermal imaging camera is used to record the heat distribution on the pot to see whether the pot can be easily moved with the hands during and after use. It is also checked whether the pot has a secure stand and to what extent it is versatile.

If the pot has several functions or accessories, these are tested in the second run. Here we cooked soup in all pots. The cleaning of all pots was done by hand.

The wearing comfort is also evaluated. In order to rule out mistakes and to ensure that the wearer is not subjected to the stress of everyday use, each test is carried out in several stages.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final mark is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on the observation of the current market. In addition to popular brand products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come on the market, our test field will be expanded to include them. The new products undergo the same tests as already tested devices.

One already often asks oneself before the camping holiday whether one should simply live on canned food or whether one should buy cheap camping tableware.
In order not to lose the overview, guidebooks can be very helpful. Just read on and you will learn interesting facts about the topic.

The OUTDOOR FREAKZ Camping Cooking Pot Set in use
The OUTDOOR FREAKZ Camping Cooking Pot Set in use

As a camper you know this feeling when you are in the fresh air, that mostly after a certain time the hunger comes. Therefore it is even more important to be equipped with a good camping cooking pot. One usually wants to reward oneself with a good soup or a warm meal. The question is which camping pot is best suited for this and what it must be able to do. Because in this area there is a big choice, in order to find the right one, one should be well informed.

An ideal camping cooking pot should, therefore, be light, if possible robust, have a good size and above all be easy to clean. Above all, you should also pay attention to good heat conduction, because the pot should also fit on the corresponding hob. If the pot is too large, it will heat up unevenly and food can burn. However, if it is too small, unnecessary energy consumption occurs, which is also not the intention of the camper.
So what materials are available in this area and what are the advantages and disadvantages.

Aluminium

Camping cookware made of aluminium heats up quickly because it is a light metal.
Aluminium is one of the most popular materials for cooking pots. Its extreme lightness is impressive; pots made of aluminium normally weigh between two and a maximum of three kilograms. Other models can easily weigh up to five kilograms. Aluminium pots make it extremely easy to carry, especially on tours lasting several days when the equipment has to be carried in a backpack. In addition, this material has high thermal conductivity, the pots heat up quickly and the food is ready in no time. One of the disadvantages is that aluminium is a very soft material and deforms more quickly than other materials when exposed to heat. It should therefore at least be additionally hardened beforehand or with thick walls. If aluminium is uncoated, it has the problem that it reacts with acidic or salty liquids and particles can come loose during use, causing a metallic taste. They are also not necessarily beneficial to health and can have negative effects. Therefore, one should not save money and prefer to use pre-hardened aluminium, which is also less sensitive to scratches and abrasions.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel camping pots are very hygienic and are considered to be durable.
For stainless steel pots, an alloy of for example iron and chrome etc. is most often used. This material is known to have a special degree of purity and is particularly impressive because it is rust-free. It is therefore described as very noble.

Pots and pans made of stainless steel are very robust, have a long service life, are very resistant and also hygienic. They are also very heat-resistant and can withstand high heat without any problems. But you should keep in mind that these pots are very heavy and very unsuitable for longer tours. Stainless steel has a rather poor heat conductivity and therefore food in very thin-walled pots can burn quickly. For this reason, campers prefer to switch to lighter or more practical models.

Silicone

Silicone camping pots and pans are even less common but also interesting.
Usually, silicone is used as a filling material (known for breast implants or for windows), but the material can also be very useful in the kitchen. Silicone is known to be a very elastic material and this is what makes it stand out.

Meanwhile, camping pots made of silicone with a stainless steel or aluminium bottom are very popular. A mix of these materials ensures that pots with a silicone wall can be folded down to the bottom and thus one thing above all, namely that they are very space-saving. Folded pots are only about five centimetres high. Another advantage is that the material is very heat-resistant and above all hard-wearing. When cooking, however, you have to be careful, as the silicone is not compatible with open fires. Therefore, silicone pots should be used moderately on a medium to low flame.

Cast iron

Another option is to buy pots made of cast iron, a material that is particularly impressive for its high heat storage capacity. Cast iron has a very high plastic content and is therefore different from steel. Cast iron has always been used as a material in the kitchen because it is characterised above all by its ability to store heat for a very long time.
With cast iron, it can take some time for the pot to reach the optimum temperature, but when it does, the heat is stored optimally in the base and the heat is distributed evenly to the food. This means that little energy is used, but it does take some time to cook. This is why camping often causes problems because most campers want to go fast. The material is heavier than stainless steel and has a negative effect especially when worn on longer trips. On the positive side, cast iron is extremely durable and long-lasting.

Especially on longer tours or mountain hikes, you don't always have the time or the necessary equipment to thoroughly clean the utensils after each use. For this reason, camping pots and dishes that are easy and quick to clean are most popular with customers. Campers, therefore, prefer to use crockery which is simply cleaned with soap and a little water. With aluminium, food does not burn so easily, but cast iron needs special care and must be cleaned more thoroughly than aluminium, for example.
If you should ever buy a completely new set, a cooking set can be recommended. Here, different utensils are stackable and can also be converted.

Camping dishes are much lighter than conventional cookware. Normal tableware is usually made of porcelain, glass or similar material. Therefore it is usually very robust and scratch-resistant, but unfortunately, it is also heavier than camping crockery, which is made of special break-proof materials. It doesn't feel like porcelain but looks very similar, which is why it is standard equipment for most campers. The most important factor for camping is, therefore, the weight of the camping gear.

Again, there are different materials with certain advantages and disadvantages. Melamine, for example, has the property that it is very durable but susceptible to scratches. It is also not suitable for dishwashers.

Tableware made of wood and steel is very durable, long-lasting and also stable. Steel dishes are even heatable and easy to clean. Of course, you should always pay attention to the workmanship and quality of the product.

The price segment for camping tableware or set is therefore very diverse. But to help you find your way around, we would like to give you a small overview of the prices that campers have to expect. The used material is the most important criterion because depending on the material costs the camping equipment is also sold.
Right at the beginning, one does not have to spend a three-figure sum for reasonable tableware. The cheapest starting prices for a set are already around 30 euros. Below this price segment, it is not necessarily recommended to buy a set, because cheaper dishes usually do not meet the standards.

Also with camping sets, there are no upper limits. Depending on the model and quality of the product or from well-known manufacturers, sets can cost up to 90 euros and more. It is recommended that the higher the price, the more attention should be paid to the workmanship of the product. There are always black sheep here, too, which customers would like to sell an actually cheap product too expensively.
Especially in the lower price segment products are often not of good quality. Pots, dishes etc. can break quickly and sometimes the products also leak quickly. Especially with thermos flasks, you should dig a little deeper into your pocket, because here a long life is of great advantage for the customer.

Of course, a camping stove is also indispensable if you want to prepare hot meals on the way. They don't take up much space, are easy to use and heat up your food in no time. You will find the right camping cooker for you here.

As a camper, you know that as a rule, every kind of luxury is avoided. But if you have the right set or the right camping cooking pot with you, you don't necessarily have to do without a certain level of food. The prerequisite for this is, of course, the right equipment, as already described in the article. For this reason, you are not forced to eat canned food every day and you can prepare fresh meals without any problems with the camping cooking pot.

Preparing soup with the camping pot

Unfortunately, since not all meals can be prepared with the best equipment, you should know what kind of dishes you can cook with your equipment.
Besides stews, you can also cook delicious pasta dishes, different kinds of rice dishes, as well as salads and dishes with eggs.
Such dishes don't take much time, are quickly prepared and above all don't need much equipment. It is important to think about whether you want to heat the dish or enjoy it cold. So if you are planning to cook properly and warm up the dishes, you should not use melamine dishes, as they should not be heated.

As a camper, you should therefore always be clear what exactly you need for what.
Due to the many different products for campers on the market, this should not be a problem for you.

As described, there is a product for every purpose on the market, from camping pots to thermos flasks.
Now it is up to you which utensils you take with you on your next camping trip!
