The Rommelsbacher JG 40 Yoghurt Maker should first be thoroughly cleaned according to the instructions for use. To do this, wash the glasses in the dishwater or in the dishwasher and then dry them thoroughly. The yoghurt maker himself should be cleaned inside and out with a damp cloth. It is important to thoroughly clean all components of the appliance before putting it into operation, as milk products are very sensitive.
Fresh milk or UHT milk is needed to prepare the yoghurt. You also need a cup of yoghurt, which ideally has the same fat content as the milk used. Alternatively, you can use yoghurt cultures, but our test was carried out with 3.5% UHT milk and 3.8% natural yoghurt. According to the manufacturer, 1 litre of milk and 150 ml of natural yoghurt should be used for all 8 glasses. Per yoghurt glass thus approximately 125 ml milk and approx. 18 g yoghurt. During testing, we followed the instructions exactly. Additives such as sugar, fruit or aromas should be avoided and added to the finished yoghurt first.
According to the instructions for use, it is not necessary to heat the UHT milk before use. So we used UHT milk that was already at room temperature. Each glass is then filled with the yoghurt and poured with the milk. The ingredients should be mixed well with a spoon. Then close the filled jars with the respective lids and place in the yoghurt maker. Then the yoghurt maker himself is closed with a lid and the electricity is connected.
To start the unit, the on/off switch must be pressed. The display will then show the default time of 9 hours. This can be varied at will with the Plus and Minus key but can be set to a maximum of 18 Hours.
The ripening process starts automatically after the desired time setting and is announced by a signal tone. The display shows the time and the timer counts the time down, so you can always see how long the machine is still in use. In the last hour, the time is displayed at minute intervals.
According to the instructions for use, the yoghurt should now mature for approx. 9 hours. We, therefore, leave it in the machine for 9 hours. After the entered maturing time has elapsed, the device switches itself off automatically. However, it is important to pull the plug after the ripening process has finished. The yoghurt is then placed in the refrigerator to cool. The day of production can be set on the lids with a wheel. This is very helpful for tracing the time of production.
The photo taken with the thermal imaging camera showed that the yoghurt containers have a temperature of approx. 38°C after 9 hours in the yoghurt maker. Thus, the device has warmed the yoghurts constantly with an average temperature of approximately 40°C. The consistency is very good. The yoghurt has become very creamy and the firmness is very even. The yoghurt is also very tasty. All in all, the yoghurt is very good compared to the competition and the ripening time of 9 hours has proven to be optimal.
The cleansing of the Rommelsbacher JG 40 Yoghurt Maker was very simple. The glasses can be cleaned together with the lids simply in the dishwasher. The inside of the appliance was hardly dirty and therefore only had to be wiped with a dry or damp cloth and dried afterwards if necessary.
