It has a large corn filling volume but is slow and many corn kernels do not develop into popcorn.

Delivers a lot of popcorn and is also a real eye-catcher, but a little bit big.

  • You can't sweeten the popcorn until it has jumped out of the popcorn machine.
  • Store the popcorn in a dry place. The drier the corn, the better the popcorn puffs.
  • Note that with some machines the popcorn flies out of the machine very quickly and can spread around the room.
  • The popcorn machines are usually only in operation for a short time, but the housing can get very hot.

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Popcorn quantity
  • Handling
  • Volume
  • Speed

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the popcorn machines. First, the scope of delivery is checked and the devices are prepared according to the manufacturer's specifications. In order to be able to compare the machines better with each other, about 30 g of corn is filled into each machine. When the machines are in operation, the time required is stopped and the power consumption is measured. In addition, the temperature of the machines is checked with a thermal imaging camera, among other things to identify potential burn hazards.

In further runs, the popcorn is garnished with salt, sugar, and butter according to the manufacturer's recommendations. During these processes, the machines are checked for handling and user-friendliness. Finally, the cleaning effort is assessed.

In order to rule out errors and to ensure the stress of everyday use, each test takes place in several rounds.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

Popcorn machine - functionality, different types and useful tips

Whether sweet or salty, there is hardly anyone who can resist this treat: We are talking about popcorn, which should not be missing in the cinema. If you don't want to go to the cinema every time so that you or your children can enjoy fresh popcorn again, the popcorn machine is a perfect choice. You can prepare fresh popcorn in your own four walls whenever you want. How the machine works, which different types there are, how you can enjoy your popcorn, all this and much more you will learn in the following guide.

Watching a movie with your family in the evening and eating delicious popcorn, what could be nicer? It used to be customary to enjoy freshly puffed corn only in the cinema. But now it's possible to eat popcorn at home thanks to the popcorn machine. The popcorn machine is an electric kitchen appliance that makes it very easy to prepare fresh popcorn. What makes it special is that it tastes just as good as it does at the cinema. A handful of corn grains is enough to make a bowl of popcorn. But you need corn that is especially suitable for popcorn. Popcorn is puffed corn. Its grains are heated until they burst open. The "puffed" corn is sweetened or salted as desired and served as a delicious snack, often still warm.

The popcorn corn is hard on the outside and has a water-containing fabric on the inside. When the corn is heated up in the popcorn machine, the inside spreads out until the outer shell bursts. The result is the popcorn.

Store the popcorn corn in a dry place. The drier the corn, the better the popcorn puffs.

So the popcorn machine provides enough heat to burst the corn. With most machines, it is enough to put the corn in and press the start button. Since the lids on many popcorn machines are transparent, you can see how the corn grains burst open. Some popcorn machines come with popcorn bags. The delicious snack can then be stylishly served in these bags.

The popcorn machine distinguishes between the following variants: This is the popcorn machine, which works with hot air, and the popcorn machine with a heating system.

Popcorn machine with hot air

The hot air devices produce the popcorn with the hot air circulating inside the device. This is where the hot air hits the popcorn container from below. The hot air is blown between the small corn grains by a fan. The corn heats up and pops up: The popcorn has emerged. The heating process only takes place through air.

The popcorn machines usually only work for a short time, but the housing can get very hot.

No greases are required which serve as heat exchangers. This is why the hot air principle is so healthy and recommendable. These devices are particularly suitable for figure-conscious popcorn fans because oil, fat or butter are not added. Refinement with sugar, salt, etc. can be done afterwards if desired. The devices are usually light, compact and very flexible. Since no oil is used, cleaning is hardly necessary.

Popcorn machine with heating system

The models with heating systems also work with heat. The corn grains pop up as a result. With these machines, the container is heated. Usually, oil or fat is needed, which is given on the heating plate, on which the maize grains are. Make sure that you use heat-resistant oil. The popcorn and the desired seasoning are mixed together so that the aromas are better absorbed. The popcorn machine should have an agitator for this purpose. The machines are usually slightly larger so that more popcorn can be prepared. The finished popcorn is not ejected with these machines, as is the case with hot-air machines. It is removed via a flap. Cleaning the popcorn machine with a heating plate is, of course, more complicated than cleaning hot air machines without grease.

Whether at the cinema or at home during a cosy or convivial evening, popcorn is a treat both sweet and salty. Salty popcorn is suitable for everyone who likes it hearty and spicy. Many refine their popcorn with caramel. The creamy caramel mass is made in a pot and added to the fresh popcorn. Then the whole thing is mixed. Then put the popcorn in the hot oven for a few minutes. This creates the golden brown caramel coat. Of course, you can also make everything directly in the popcorn machine with a heating system. The legendary popcorn is popular with children and adults. Popcorn is especially popular in cinemas, as well as in-home cinemas. This makes the cinema experience much more authentic. Many also place a popcorn machine in their own party cellar to spoil their guests with a delicious snack. Not only at children's birthday parties is it an absolute hit.

In any case, corn is one of the world's most important crops. It is rich in starch and fibre. Thanks to its high content of nutrients and minerals, it has been used for healthy nutrition since ancient times. There are hot-air popcorn machines that produce popcorn without fat or sugar. This makes it a low-calorie snack. In a hot air popcorn machine, the corn is heated only briefly, so that the minerals, vitamins and the indigestible, long-satiating dietary fibres, which stimulate digestion, are preserved. The antioxidants it contains are considered radical scavengers. They can protect the body from harmful environmental toxins and carcinogenic substances. The protein content of around 13 grams per 100 grams cannot be neglected either.

The self-produced popcorn is therefore healthy, especially without the use of fat and too much sugar, and can also be used as an ingredient in muesli. So when you're watching TV or in other situations where you're hungry for sweets, choose popcorn with less sugar instead of chips or chocolate.

A big advantage of the homemade popcorn is that you can refine it according to your mood. Do you prefer it with sugar or rather spicy with butter and salt or other spices like paprika? Both are possible. Of course, the ingredients can also vary.

You can't sweeten the popcorn until it has jumped out of the popcorn machine.

Since the hot air popcorn machine does not use any fat or sugar for its preparation, you can also choose a low-calorie version, which you can of course also spice up. The popcorn burns much less with a popcorn machine. The preparation is simple and quick.

Non-stick coating

Make sure you have a non-stick coating to prevent the popcorn corn or caramelised sugar from burning. Cleaning a popcorn machine without a non-stick coating can be very tedious.

Performance of the popcorn machine

The power is given in watts. The duration of the preparation of the popcorn depends on it. The higher the wattage, the shorter it is. The usual wattage is between 900 and 1,200 W. After switching on the device, it only takes a few minutes for the corn to turn into popcorn.

Keep warm function

Many larger appliances can keep the popcorn warm and fresh for several hours with a special warming lamp.

Popcorn preparation with popcorn loop

For the preparation you need an ordinary stainless steel pot, in which you put some fat and popcorn corn, as well as the loop, which consists of a manually operated, heat-resistant stirring rod. This is rotated during heating so that the popcorn remains in motion and cannot burn. It is heated evenly and the grains pop up. A cotton cloth provides the crispness of the popcorn. The fabric stretched over the pot allows the steam generated during heating to escape and prevents popcorn from jumping out. The popcorn loop is an alternative for those who don't want to buy a popcorn machine but still want to enjoy fresh popcorn.

Popcorn from the pan

Here you put the fat and the corn in a hot pan. The heat pops the corn up and it becomes popcorn. To prevent the corn from burning, it must be stirred and turned constantly. However, the hot corn grains or the finished popcorn can quickly jump out of the pan. This makes stirring more difficult.

Microwave popcorn

Here you heat special microwave popcorn, which is already seasoned, in the closed paper bag. It only takes a few minutes in the microwave to pop up the corn. Note, however, that the fat content of the microwave popcorn is around 42 percent.

Popcorn can therefore also be produced without a popcorn machine. True popcorn lovers will, however, taste the differences. When prepared with a popcorn machine, the taste is like in a cinema. Preparation is also much easier. When prepared in a pot or in a pan, the popcorn can easily burn if the temperature is too high, while too much condensation can make it soft and muddy. With a popcorn machine, it is always produced in optimal quality.

Very early on, people realized that corn grains burst open in the heat and popcorn is produced in this way. The Natives in South and North America did not only let popcorn pop up to eat it, but also used it as body jewellery. An Indian chief gave the popcorn away to settlers at Thanksgiving. Thus it was further spread. Christopher Columbus also ate popcorn during his invasion of America in 1492. The popcorn machines were invented by Charles Cretors in the 19th century. In Ohio, there is a museum where the first functional popcorn car is exhibited. In 1930 the cinemas became more and more popular and so popcorn established itself as the standard snack in cinemas all over the world. For many cinema-goers, the consumption of popcorn is a fixed component. While the earlier popcorn machines were quite large and only suitable for cinemas and other businesses, the devices are now available for every household.

Conclusion

Popcorn can be a sweet and greasy sin, but also exactly the opposite: When you prepare it with a hot air popcorn machine, it becomes a healthy, high fiber snack that has positive effects on the body. Corn is a very valuable cereal with important ingredients that are retained during preparation in the popcorn machine. The popcorn machine fills 60 to 100 grams of corn. For a one- or two-person household, a smaller filling quantity is sufficient.

Cleaning the machine is more time-consuming if more fat is used for preparation. Hot-air popcorn machines that operate without oil are the easiest to clean. If you are looking for a healthy diet, you will also be perfectly advised. For larger quantities of popcorn, popcorn machines with a heating plate are suitable. Here the corn is prepared with fat, sugar or salt. In principle, popcorn can also be prepared with other kitchen utensils such as a pot or microwave. But with a popcorn machine, it's easier and faster and the taste of the delicious popcorn is in no way inferior to the popcorn served in the cinema.
