1st place: Krups GVS241 Perfect Mix 9000 Ice Machine

Test seal: Krups GVS241 Perfect Mix 9000 Ice Machine, Rating excellent

The Krups GVS241 Perfect Mix 9000 Ice Machine is by far the test winner in our comparison. Processing, handling, and results are convincing.

However, the performance also comes at a higher price. A further shortcoming is a fact that the freezer container has to be placed in the freezer longer than the others. But this is no problem if you always keep the freezer container there anyway.

It copes well with more liquid ice cream mixes and can also produce yoghurt.

3rd place: WMF KITCHENminis Ice Cream Maker 3-in-1

The WMF KITCHENminis Ice Cream Maker 3-in-1 scores above all with its good workmanship. It is also easy to operate and produces delicious ice cream for creamy ice cream mixes. With more liquid ice cream machines, however, the consistency remains slushy even after a longer period of time.

Additionally, you can produce sorbets and frozen yoghurt with the WMF ice cream machine, for this the manufacturer supplies various recipes. The accessories supplied by the manufacturer are also very useful and well thought out.

If you are looking for an ice cream machine for smaller portions you will find it here.

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and established the following test criteria:

  • Handling
  • Scope of functions
  • Result
  • Processing
  • Cleaning
  • Design

To be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the ice machines. In these tests, strawberry and chocolate ice cream is prepared with the machines. Before the first use, the scope of delivery is first checked for additional accessories. Then the machines are prepared and assembled according to the manufacturer's instructions. In doing so, attention is always paid to user-friendliness and handling. The ice cream mixture is put into the machines and the time during the process is topped. Further functions are checked in further passes. Once the ice cream is ready, it is evaluated by several test persons. If the desired consistency has not been achieved, a run with individual settings is carried out. Finally, the appliances are cleaned and tested to ensure that the individual parts are dishwasher safe.

In order to exclude errors and to ensure that the test is not affected by everyday use, each test is carried out in several runs.

The test criteria are given percentages according to their importance. The final mark is finally calculated objectively from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on the observation of the current market. In addition to popular brand products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come on the market, our test field will be expanded to include them. The new products undergo the same tests as already tested devices.

What is an ice cream machine?

An ice cream machine is a functional household appliance with which you can make fresh ice cream "as if you were Italian" yourself with very little effort. There are almost no limits to the creativity of taste.

Moreover, a modern ice cream machine is even capable of producing fructose and lactose-free ice cream and generating new ice cream creations again and again. It is possible to produce a cream or fruit ice cream as well as delicious sorbets in all imaginable variations with the ice cream machine at the push of a button, literally bringing the Italian ice cream parlour into the home kitchen.

The appropriate ingredients required for the preparation of the ice cream are filled into the opening of the ice cream machine provided for this purpose. There they are first mixed with a kneading or stirring hook.

Then the kneading device inside the machine completely stirs the ingredients and at the same time starts the freezing process. This produces a uniform mass, which becomes steadily and evenly cold during the stirring phase.

Always new ice cream creations, also fructose- or lactose-free

.

These continuous stirring movements ensure that no ice crystals can form in the ice mass. This is essential for the good taste and consistency of homemade ice cream.

At the same time, it is precisely this aspect that distinguishes the ice cream machine from simply freezing a home-made ice cream mass in a conventional bowl.

In fact, the difference in this context is clearly visible: if the ingredients necessary for the production of ice cream are put into a bowl and these are placed in the freezer after being mixed evenly, ice crystals usually form in the mass after a relatively short time.

And these can strongly denature the pleasure of the treat for the true ice cream fan. The situation is different when everything is prepared in the ice cream machine. The result is a homogeneous, ice-cold mass whose taste can literally enchant the senses.

Homemade ice cream

If you are a real ice cream fan, you will be "spoilt for choice" between different types of ice cream. Among others, the classic ice cream, as well as soft ice cream and slush ice cream, are to be mentioned here. Ice cubes and crushed ice round off this portfolio.

As varied as the wide world of ice cream dishes is, the selection of ice cream machines has long since become as large. Of particular relevance here are the classic ice cream machine and the soft ice cream machine. There are also special slush ice machines, ice cube machines, and crushed ice makers.

The modern ice cream machine is available in different versions. Today, there are machines that are equipped with a compressor and there are models where the compressor is completely missing. In addition, the interested consumer has the possibility to buy soft ice cream machines that work without pre-cooling. Last but not least, the so-called sorbet makers are also relevant.

In soft ice cream machines, the ice cream mass is cooled down to about -6 degrees Celsius during preparation. This is different with a classic ice cream machine, where cooling is done to around -18 degrees Celsius. Soft ice cream machines, which are only used in the private sector, therefore do not necessarily require a compressor. Rather, it is sufficient for machines of this type to use a cooling battery, which is pre-cooled in the freezer beforehand.

One should not buy "just any" ice cream machine. Rather, there is a lot to consider when buying such a machine. On the one hand, it depends on the size. Anyone who wants to produce ice cream himself regularly and in large quantities needs a particularly robust ice cream machine that is characterized by a high performance and function portfolio.

After all, the mass must first be stirred evenly and then successively cooled. This costs energy and requires a powerful motor.

An ice cream machine with a compressor is therefore ideal. The advantage of an ice cream machine without a compressor or without integrated cooling is that they are much smaller and handier. The ice container can, therefore, be conveniently placed in the ice compartment and brought to "low temperature".

However, the effort involved in preparing ice cream with a machine without compressor is more complex. This is due to the fact that the built-in freezer pack has to be cooled in the freezer compartment for several hours beforehand.

Compared to the ice cream machine with compressor, classic ice cream machines are considerably cheaper and often available for less than 50 Euros. It should be noted, however, that there should be at least one spacious freezer compartment, otherwise the container cannot be placed in it.

Ice machines without compressor are cheaper, but you need a lot of space in the freezer compartment

.

It is worthwhile to put on the red pencil. Interested consumers should take into account that compressor machines have a much higher energy consumption than an ice cream machine without a compressor. However, the ice cream is usually ready after about 20 to 30 minutes.

Another decisive factor is how many people live in the household. Singles who want to buy an ice cream machine usually need an ice cream machine with a capacity of about half a litre. For 4-person households, it requires a much larger container.

After all, everyone wants to enjoy homemade ice cream in adequate quantities. Surely it is also possible to produce smaller quantities of ice cream in a large ice cream machine. But here too, energy consumption should be taken into account.

An ice cream machine should also be as easy to clean as possible. The hygiene aspect plays a central role in the preparation of ice cream. If it is not possible to remove food residues carefully due to a too complex design, this would be a real disadvantage.

ice cream machine
Chocolate ice cream machine

Whoever owns an ice cream machine benefits from numerous advantages. You can make ice cream whenever you feel like it. Surely, with an ice cream machine without compressor, you sometimes have to wait several hours until the desired delicacy is finally ready to eat.

But then there are practically no limits to the tasteful pleasure. One saves the drive to the ice cream parlour and can look forward to an individual ice cream pleasure. A very decisive advantage for quality-conscious consumers is certainly the fact that with homemade ice cream you know exactly what's in it.

This is not always the case with ice cream from the ice cream parlour around the corner. Every professional ice-cream maker certainly has his own recipe. But it is not always obvious at first sight if first-class ingredients are always used for the production of the ice cream.

As the owner of an ice cream machine, you do not take such a risk. The ingredients can be selected individually and even the taste of the respective ice cream varieties can be chosen freely.

If you want to eat homemade ice cream in the shortest possible time, you should choose a compressor ice cream machine. Patient connoisseurs are also well advised to use a classic ice cream machine. Even if the waiting time for your favourite delicacy is considerably longer.

An ice cream machine with compressor works considerably louder than a compressorless ice cream machine. This is not surprising, as it takes power and energy to carefully mix the number of ingredients together and at the same time cool them down.

In addition, one should not forget that the consumption of energy can sometimes be very high, depending on the model. Especially with older ice cream machines, it is therefore helpful to find out in advance whether the ice cream from the Italian around the corner might not be cheaper than the ice cream you prepare yourself in your own ice cream machine.

Ice cream is cold, sweet and incredibly delicious. When you enjoy ice cream, you are usually involuntarily reminded of the "good old days" of childhood: how beautiful it was when the ice cream vendor drove through the streets of the neighborhood in his ice cream cart and, by ringing his hand bell loudly, attracted children and adults and sold them his ice-cold delicacies. There the joy was always great. Today, on the other hand, many adults see the ice cream rather - and certainly in a positive sense - as a "sweet sin". Because a scoop of chocolate ice cream can contain up to 170 calories. With lemon or raspberry ice cream it is just 80 to 90 calories. A few years ago, July 23 of each year was even declared Vanilla Ice Day. Is it because vanilla ice cream has always been one of the most popular ice cream varieties among Germans?

The first ice cream machine was invented by Carl von Linde in 1876. It is thanks to the inventive genius of this engineer that ice cream is literally available in large quantities today. Many people are not even aware that ice cream was not invented by the Italians at all. The fact is that it was the Chinese who made the first ice cream from fruit and honey several years ago. According to current statistics, every German eats on average about eight litres of ice cream per year. The Swedes and Norwegians, on the other hand, eat far more, at around 12 litres each. At the top of this ranking are the Finns. They produce almost 13 litres of ice cream per person per year. It is also worth noting in this context that ice cream on a stick is sold more than a billion times a year.

While until a few years ago you could only buy a few types of ice cream in the ice cream parlour around the corner or from the mobile ice cream man, the range on offer has changed considerably. Once there was only vanilla, chocolate, stracciatella and lemon.

Today, cookies, zabaglione, Malaga, Amarena and many other delicious ice creams are part of this tasty range.

Current statistics show that vanilla is still the most popular ice cream variety among Germans. This is followed by the classic - chocolate - in second place, strawberry ice cream in third place, followed by stracciatella and yoghurt. Next, real ice cream fans are particularly fond of the Latte Macchiato ice cream. Only then do consumers choose the well-known lemon flavour. Hazelnut, raspberry and cream-cherry form the crowning glory in this range.

Simply delicious - the classics

vanilla ice cream
vanilla ice cream

The beauty of modern ice cream machines is that these classics can be changed again and again at will by adding more ingredients. The yoghurt ice cream, for example, can be spiced up with fruit pieces of various kinds.

The chocolate variety, on the other hand, could be enriched with chocolate chips, nuts or chocolate cream. If you like, add a nut nougat cream and almond pieces to the hazelnut ice cream. You are free to experiment as you please.

All members of the family can show off their favourite flavours and thus produce new ice cream creations with the machine again and again.

If you consider that ice cream is not only a pure sweetness but - depending on its texture - also contains healthy milk, protein, fruit or nuts, you can certainly benefit from a certain "wellness factor". In general, it is a good feeling to eat ice cream and to close your eyes with pleasure.

Experience has shown that anyone who looks forward to a wonderfully cold, tasty ice cream when visiting an ice cream parlour or ice cream parlour is bound by the choice of the respective supplier. Certainly the product portfolio today is extremely diverse.

But it still happens that there is not always the right ice cream for every taste. For this reason alone, it is worth buying your own ice cream machine. Because there are literally no limits to good taste.

Modern ice cream machines have the advantage that they can be used to prepare almost any type of ice cream you can imagine. Anything is possible. Whether lemon, chocolate, vanilla or banana or Malaga, cookies, amarena or tiramisu.

The problem is, however, that ice cream from the ice cream parlour could sometimes contain ingredients that are not tolerated individually. For example, we are talking about fructose, gluten or lactose intolerance.

Certainly, most commercial suppliers usually make sure that they serve this clientele with an appropriate range of ice cream. But the fact is that the choice is still relatively small in comparison. Therefore, it is a good idea to buy your own ice cream machine in order to fully meet this high demand.

Good taste knows no limits

With an ice cream machine, for example, you have the option of combining the ingredients in such a way that lactose-, gluten- or even fructose-free ingredients can be processed. Or you can use maple syrup or stevia instead of the classic, harmful sugar.

Cream substitutes instead of conventional animal products can also be added to the list of ingredients. If you like, you can also produce ice cream in your own ice cream machine using only locally grown products.

This way you not only benefit from a lot of variety in ice cream preparation, but you can also do something for your health. Which type of ice cream you produce with the ice cream machine is purely a matter of discretion. Allowed is what pleases.

So you can experiment with modern equipment in this product category to your heart's content and try out new recipes again and again.
