It takes only 90 seconds to heat 1 l of liquid to the optimum drinking temperature for hot drinks. However, when I measured the temperature, the number of degrees was a few degrees below the target temperature. The liquid flows out of the outlet tap in an appropriate proportion. In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and established the following test criteria:

To be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the hot beverage vending machines. The devices are put into operation as recommended by the manufacturer. In a first test run, all vending machines are filled with water and it is tested how the taps can be handled. It is also assessed whether the liquid flows out of the tap in an appropriate quantity and evenly. Furthermore, it is tested how long the hot beverage vending machines need to bring the water to boiling point.

When tapping the hot water, it is measured whether the water temperatures correspond to the temperature settings and whether there are any deviations. In the course of this, it is also tested how long it takes to heat up the liquid. During the test runs, the power consumption of all devices is also measured. Furthermore, the hot beverage vending machines are tested for risk of burns and overheating protection. After the test runs with water, the whole process is repeated with mulled wine. Finally, the cleaning of the vending machines is evaluated.

Whether in waiting rooms, canteens or large shopping arcades - hot drink vending machines can be found in many public places nowadays. But they are also becoming increasingly popular for private use. Depending on the drinks they are filled with, they are in demand all year round. There are almost no limits to the range of products on offer. Whether coffee, cocoa, tea, mulled wine or even soups - most vending machines can in principle deliver everything that is hot and liquid.

Hot drink vending machines work quite simply but nevertheless very well thought out.
A separate mixing and dispensing unit is used for each product variant that differs from the usual drinks such as coffee, espresso or cocoa. This ensures that the products do not mix with leftovers and that you end up with a coffee with grease residues because your predecessor left a soup out of the vending machine. A separate product container is used for soups, for example. The soluble soup powder is stored in this container. This powder is then mixed with hot water using the mixing unit provided for this purpose. With the help of a mixing unit, powder and water are then mixed and also filled into the dispensing cups with their own hoses and nozzles. The soup, therefore, does not come into contact with the coffee dispensing units at any point.

When the user selects his product by choosing the machine, the hot water is activated first. It flows into the mixing unit and moistens and rinses the entire hose. A little later the product motor is started to transport the selected product powder into the mixing bowl. The powder falls into the mixing unit where it is mixed with freshwater and then transported via a dispensing hose to the dispensing nozzle to be filled into a cup or mug. The hot water is filled into the cup for as long as the preset filling quantity has been set.

Hot drink vending machines usually require a separate water connection so that fresh water can always be dispensed from the tap. This eliminates the need to constantly refill a water tank. If this is not used for a longer period of time, for example over the weekend, the water could taste stale. But also vending machines without a direct water connection are popular, as they can be set up and taken down more quickly. Furthermore, such a vending machine also needs a power connection so that it can be cooled or, in the case of hot drinks, heated. Regular maintenance and service of the machine means that all products are subject to constant and strict controls, so you can always be sure that the product you choose is really fresh. All powders have a very long expiry date and are stored in the machine in special product containers. These containers must always be closed and protected from environmental influences. Should liquid be spilled during dispensing, it will flow into a collecting container. This is cleaned and disinfected again with every routine maintenance. Maintenance is usually carried out by breweries or suppliers who charge a monthly service fee. If you have a vending machine at home, make sure to clean it regularly and thoroughly.

The filling products in the vending machines are subject to strict criteria. It must be guaranteed that the pourability always remains exactly the same for each product dispensed. This is necessary to guarantee a consistent taste. The products must be quickly soluble, so they must always guarantee this.

To protect the environment, you should always make sure to use your own cups or mugs. All plastic or paper cups must be disposed of after a single use in accordance with the food hygiene regulations. Cleaning and reusing these cups is therefore not permitted.

Hot drink vending machines are often found in places like offices, hospitals, government offices, canteens and of course Christmas markets. The machines are also popular at company internal or private Christmas parties.

For private use, a small compact device is recommended, which will find a good place on a table or in the kitchenette. These devices usually work with a water tank, so they only need a power connection and no separate water connection. The appliances are equipped with a classic touch screen, which makes the operation very easy. Most hot drink machines have an hourly output of up to 150 cups. Via the control panel, which is usually attractively illuminated with LEDs, the machines offer several selection keys that can be individually programmed for the individual products. Make sure that your machine is equipped with a ceramic grinder. These have a particularly long service life. Modern appliances naturally also have an integrated power saving mode. If you attach particular importance to toppings, make sure to purchase a vending machine that is equipped with a separate product container. You can pour milk into this container, for example, which is then frothed. Most of the devices also have an own self-cleaning program that can be activated comfortably via the display. This way, the device maintains itself virtually by itself.

For many employees, patients, customers or simply private individuals, such a hot drink vending machine is often a true blessing. There is nothing worse than staying (or having to stay) in one place for a long time and having nothing warm to drink. This is why hot drink vending machines are always popular - and not only in winter. Coffee is the most commonly consumed beverage, but especially during the Christmas season, hot-drink vending machine users are not averse to a delicious mulled wine (or children's punch). This product is just as suitable for vending machines as coffee.

In many European countries, mulled wine is a very popular drink, especially in the cold season. The spicy, warm wine with its seductive aroma is traditionally part of the Advent season. Just like the Christmas tree or the stollen, mulled wine should not be missing on any Christmas market. But where does the delicious spicy drink come from? Even the ancient Greeks seasoned their wines. But the origin of mulled wine is attributed to the Romans. Already more than 2000 years ago the Romans added spices to their wines. This had several reasons. For one, the wine was quite sour and they wanted to improve the taste. On the other hand, they also added spices to increase shelf life.

The first written mention of the spiced wine comes from the cookbook of the Roman Apicius. It is about 2000 years old and describes a recipe for refining wine with spices such as cinnamon, coriander, cloves, cardamom, pimento, nutmeg, thyme, and mace. In the Roman Empire the enjoyment of spicy wine was only attributed to the wealthy, as spices were very expensive and the middle and lower classes could not afford them at all. At that time this kind of wine was still drunk cold. To make the wine taste sweeter, honey was often added. The sugar contained in it prolonged its shelf life and made it more pleasant to taste. Spiced wine was also said to have healing properties. However, this was not due to the wine itself, but to the spices that were added, as we know today. Cloves, for example, have an antibacterial and digestive effect. Cinnamon is said to be aphrodisiac, stimulates digestion and strengthens the immune system. Cardamom stimulates the appetite and the essential oils contained in it provide feelings of happiness and a very good mood. Over time, the spicy wine has developed into mulled wine by warming it.

Mulled wine is usually made from red wine, but can also be made from fruity white wines. Its minimum alcohol content is 7 % vol. If rum, liqueur or brandy is added to the wine, it is called punch. Nowadays, mulled wine can easily be made at home. Many supermarkets already deliver ready-made packages with mulled wine spices, which you only have to stir into your wine. Alternatively, you can, of course, make your own mulled wine. Below you will find a few delicious recipes that you can try out at home.

Classic mulled wine

For delicious self-righteous mulled wine you need the following ingredients:

1 bottle of good, dry red wine
2 cinnamon sticks
6 cloves
1 orange
4 star anise
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons cane sugar
You can also add cardamom, coriander or pimento if you wish.

The optimum drinking temperature is between 70 °C and 75 °C.

In a large pot, you heat the wine on low heat. At the same time, slice the oranges and add them. Then add all the spices, cane sugar, and honey. You should mix everything well so that honey and sugar can dissolve well. The most important thing is that the wine should never boil. It should always only be warmed up. This has two reasons:

1. When cooking, the alcohol evaporates and we don't want that, of course.
2. if wine is boiled for a longer period of time, the sugar degradation product hydroxymethylfurfural is formed, which is said to be carcinogenic.

If the wine is well warmed up, take it off the stove and let it soak for several hours. During this time the aroma can fully develop. When the time is up, the mulled wine is warmed up again and can then be drunk warm.

The advantage of the self-produced mulled wine is that you can determine the aroma, the sweetness by adding the spices. If you like it especially sweet, you can of course also use a sweet variety instead of the dry wine.

White mulled wine

The classic mulled wine is based on red wine, but there are also delicious recipes for white mulled wine.

1 bottle of Riesling
1 organic orange
1 organic lemon
2 star anise
2 sticks Ceylon cinnamon
3 tablespoons honey, sugar or agave syrup

First, rub the peel of the lemon and orange, but make sure that you really only rub the peel and do not add the white skin. This tastes bitter and is not suitable for the recipe.

Then press both fruits thoroughly and put the juices together with the Riesling in a large pot. Then add the spices and sweetener of your choice and warm it gently on the stove. As already described for the classic mulled wine, please always make sure that the wine never boils.

The brew should steep for at least an hour after heating. Afterwards you can reheat it again (as always do not cook!) and then serve hot.

Non-alcoholic mulled wine

If children are present, they want to do the same as adults and drink mulled wine. So it should also be possible to offer an alcohol-free version. It is not only suitable for children, but also for those who do not like alcohol or who have to drive home in the evening.

1 l apple or grape juice
2 cloves
1 stick of Ceylon cinnamon
1 organic lemon
1 small organic apple
Some honey if required

Heat the juice in a pot. Cut the apple into small cubes and the lemon into small slices and add them to the pot. Then add the cloves and the cinnamon. When the whole thing has warmed up well, you should definitely try the brew. Fruit juices are naturally very sweet. If this is not enough, you can add honey. If the non-alcoholic mulled wine is already too sweet without the honey, you can stretch it with a fruit tea.
