The Kitchen machine from Profi Cook makes a good overall impression. It comes in a chic design, is easy to handle and fulfils all its functions. It comes with comparatively few accessories, including various stirring attachments and a mixing bowl.
At the same time, the machine is very heavy. The machine did well in our test, but it is rather unsuitable for small quantities. Without the accessories that can be ordered, it only has a few functions. In addition, we could not find some additional accessories.
The All-in-One Food Processor by Rosenstein & Söhne comes with a lot of accessories, including a meat grinder and a mixer attachment. The machine is easy to handle. However, the workmanship is not completely convincing. The machine partly wobbles during use and the mixer attachment fails due to frozen fruits. In addition, the food processor belongs to the somewhat louder appliances.
The most important tip: Clean the device and the accessories immediately after use so that the residue does not dry out.
Toothpicks and toothbrushes will help you clean cracks.
Steel wool and aggressive cleaning agents can damage the machine.
When handling sharp accessories, be sure to touch them with a cloth.
Children should never operate kitchen machines.
Always disconnect the mains plug when changing the attachments and cutting attachments. The same applies to the cleaning process.
Observe the notes on the minimum and maximum quantities. If you do not fill enough into the appliance, the processing will be unclean. If you fill in too much, accidents may occur due to the resulting unbalance.
Never reach into rotating parts when the unit is in operation. The force is unlikely to be high, which can result in serious injury.

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the kitchen machines. In these tests, all appliances must knead pizza dough, whip egg white, whip cream and prepare a milkshake.
First, the scope of delivery and the available functions are checked. In the first test run, pizza dough is prepared in the machines.
Our testers make the dough themselves from the following ingredients: 250 ml water, 400 g wheat flour, 25 ml olive oil, 5 g salt, 1 pack dry yeast, 2.5 g sugar. The dough is treated with a dough hook and when it is ready, its consistency is assessed.
Then beat the egg whites and cream with a whisk. The result is also evaluated here. In a further run, the integrated blender is put to the test. For this, 1-2 bananas, approx. 200 g berries and milk are filled in instinctively.

If the machines are also equipped with continuous cutters, 2 carrots are put into them and the different cutting functions are tested. During these test runs, the handling, user-friendliness and stability of the machines are evaluated.
Finally, the cleaning effort and the dishwasher resistance of individual parts are tested.
In order to rule out errors and to ensure the stress of everyday use, each test is carried out in several stages.
The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

A food processor - also called kitchen machine - is an electrically driven kitchen aid for stirring and kneading dough, chopping and cutting fruit and vegetables, whipping cream and many other tasks that have to be done every day in the kitchen while cooking and baking. The term "machine" comes from the Latin "machina" and means "a machine that carries out operations automatically".
Based on the Latin origin of the name machine, a hand blender is probably the simplest food processor. However, today it is generally understood to mean machines that perform several functions and tasks in the preparation of a wide variety of dishes. Kitchen machines can be divided into three categories, but the transitions are mostly fluid:

In addition to the functions of a universal kitchen machine, they offer the possibility of cooking food directly. Practically, these kitchen machines are often equipped with an integrated scale, which simplifies the composition of ingredients to the gram.

The offer is very large and the manufacturers offer kitchen machines for every household size and in many different equipment variants. So everyone can find the perfect kitchen machine to suit their needs.
Depending on the model, kitchen machines offer different functions. Most modern kitchen machines are all-rounders that combine several kitchen appliances. Typical functions of a kitchen machine are:

The first three functions, the stirring and kneading of dough for cakes, bread or pizzas, the whipping of cream and egg white and the mixing of almost any ingredients, are mastered by practically all food processors. Various machines can be extended with attachments and additional tools to include further functions, for example for preparing minced meat or grating and cutting fruit and vegetables.
When pureeing hot soups, you are exposed to a high risk of burns. Pay special attention to the correct positioning of the lid.
Food processors with a cooking function that facilitates the preparation of different dishes are becoming increasingly popular. Equally useful can be a built-in scale that doesn't make a kitchen scale superfluous, but avoids an additional step of weighing ingredients in separate bowls. A comparison of the different offers is therefore definitely worthwhile.
The following criteria allow you to easily compare and evaluate kitchen machines and select the one that best suits your needs:
The capacity depends on the quantities you have to or want to prepare with the machine. A proven rule of thumb is that you can count on a capacity of about 1 litre per person. For a 4-person household, a machine with a capacity of around 4 litres is just right. You shouldn't choose a much bigger machine, because often a minimum filling quantity is required to use the machine.
The power of the engine must be designed according to the intended use and the capacity of the machine. For simple tasks such as whipping cream or beaten egg white, around 150 to 200 watts are sufficient. This corresponds approximately to the motor power of a hand mixer. The machine should have at least 500 to 700 watts for chopping vegetables or kneading the light dough with a lot of liquid. Machines with a motor output of 1,000 to 1,500 watts are recommended for the preparation of heavy doughs such as yeast or short pastry. In addition to motor power, speed levels also play an important role.
Speed levels and impulse function
A food processor should have at least 3 better 5 different speeds from slow to dough kneading to very fast to whipping cream. The more steps you have, the better you can adjust the stirring speed to your needs. It is very important that the machine has a so-called juice start. This protects the machine from damage if it has to work against high resistance, such as a firm dough, when it is switched on. An impulse function, in which the machine works and pauses automatically at intervals, allows ingredients thrown to the edge of the mixing bowl to slide back so that everything is mixed evenly.
Basic equipment and accessories
When buying a food processor you should make sure that at least whisks, whisks, and dough hooks are included in the basic equipment of the processor. With this, you can already do a lot of work in your kitchen. Additional parts and functions depend on your needs and range from a vegetable slicer, citrus juicer, juicer and mincer to a built-in scale and cooking function, depending on model and equipment.
Most kitchen machines have a simple agitator where the kneading and stirring tools are only driven and rotated. High-quality kitchen machines today often have a so-called planetary agitator, in which the agitating tools are not only rotated but are also moved horizontally through the bowl. This function can otherwise only be found on large machines, for example in bakeries. Due to the additional movement, all ingredients are mixed faster and more evenly.
Material of the bowl
The material of the mixing bowl is also an important purchase criterion for a food processor. The bowls are usually made of stainless steel or plastic. Stainless steel bowls are very robust, stainless, easy to clean and durable. Plastic bowls are somewhat lighter and can usually be cleaned in the dishwasher like stainless steel bowls. The disadvantage is that the bowls may discolour over time and become somewhat brittle. When buying a food processor with a plastic mixing bowl, make sure that the bowl is made of BPA-free plastic. These plastics were specially developed for contact with food and are considered harmless.
Dimensions and weight
Not every kitchen machine fits into every kitchen. A food processor is usually not stowed away in the cupboard after each use. The size of the machine depends on the space available on the worktop. The weight is also an important criterion. The heavier the machine, the more secure it is at its place of work and does not move over the work surface. Machines made of metal are generally more stable than machines made of plastic.
Cleaning the machine
This is an important point when choosing a food processor. Optimal are machines whose parts you can easily clean in the dishwasher. In addition, all tools and attachments should be easy to assemble and remove. Smooth surfaces with few corners and edges or protruding switches facilitate the cleaning of the entire machine with a damp cloth.
Toothpick and toothbrush help you to clean cracks. Do without steel wool and aggressive cleaning agents, as they can damage the machine.
Ratings from other buyers
Last but not least, it is worth taking a look at the ratings and opinions of other buyers. How do you rate a machine? Have they noticed any defects or are they completely satisfied? Customer recessions provide you with important information about the machine you have selected. Filters when reading the customer reviews all too exuberantly positive and conspicuously negative evaluation out.
Where can I buy a food processor?
You can find kitchen machines in the major electrical markets, at electronics retailers, in well-stocked furniture stores, and in numerous online shops. Occasionally, discounters such as Aldi or Lidl also offer inexpensive kitchen machines for sale. Today, however, most buyers prefer to buy a kitchen machine online. The advantages of buying online are the greater choice and the generally lower price compared to stationary retail. In addition, you can compare the prices of the various offers on the Internet with a few clicks and order the optimal device immediately.
In addition to food processors, we have also tested purifiers or smoothie-mixer for smaller quantities.
If you need a bit more power, but can't use extra functions like grating and planing, we recommend a stand mixer, which we also tested. It can be used to puree food, make drinks and soups and much more.
In December 2018, Stiftung Warentest evaluated kitchen machines, but the result was not particularly good. Eight appliances were tested, of which five were rated "Satisfactory", one "Sufficient" and two "Poor".
There is, therefore, no real test winner; the MUM 5 CreationLine by Bosch finishes best with a 2.6. The loser of the test is the Silvercrest SKMP 1300 from Lidl, which was graded 5.0.
The final score consists of four criteria: Function (40%), versatility (5%), handling (25%), noise (10%), durability (15%), safety (5%).
In all eight kitchen machines, light batter, yeast dough, and heavy batter were kneaded and stirred. In addition, the machines had to mix, purée, whip cream, cut leeks and onions, chop almonds and parsley, grate carrots and grate cheese according to supplier specifications. Not all machines have all these features, which had an impact on the rating in terms of versatility - where most machines did very well.
For handling, two experts and three hobby chefs assessed the assembly of accessories as well as usability and cleaning by hand. In addition, instructions for use and, if available, enclosed recipes were evaluated.
The durability was checked by means of an endurance test. The kitchen machines had to stir 100 cycles of water, 100 cycles of a yeast dough simulation mass and 300 cycles of a sponge dough simulation mass. This simulated 5 years of moderate use and 2.5 years of intensive household use. The WMF and Lidl devices could not withstand this endurance test.
In terms of safety, all kitchen machines failed. The rotating blades of all appliances could be operated openly, which represents a high risk, especially for children. The lid of the KitchenAid appliance also jumped off during operation.
Only one device was found in our practical test - the test winner from Stiftung Warentest, MUM 5 by Bosch. Although this food processor did not emerge as the winner from our test, it narrowly came in second with a rating of 1.5. Our price-performance winner Russell Hobbs was not tested by Stiftung Warentest.
