The Philips Grund and Brew coffee machine is distinguished from other coffee machines by its two separate coffee bean containers. Thus two different types of beans can be filled into the machine and it can be decided whether one of them or both will be used. The coffee beans can be filled into the machine as easily as the water. Also the operation is very intuitive. Other functions, such as scaling the degree of fineness of the coffee beans, make preparing good coffee a pleasure. However, it should also be noted that this coffee machine has no drip stop, so that the coffee can quickly run out of the machine if there is no can inside it.
The Philips Grind and Brew has two separate bean containers. So you can choose between two different beans at any time. With a selector switch for the beans, you can either select one of the two bean types or create a mixture of the two. A total of approximately 250 g of beans (125 g each) fit into the two containers.
This coffee machine is mainly designed for tilting roasted coffee beans into the coffee bean container and grinding them by the machine. However, coffee that has already been ground can also be filled into the filter. The mode must therefore be changed in the settings. This works very easily. At the front there is a door behind which a coffee filter of size 4 must be placed. The door is opened by pressing a button on the outside right.
In order to use the machine, the water tank and the coffee bean container must be filled in advance. The water tank can be filled with 2 to 10 cups of water (275 - 1,375 ml). Since the container is located at the front of the machine, filling is very easy. With the help of a practical display you can read exactly how many cups the water in the container is sufficient for. It is important to note that the set number of cups corresponds to the quantity in the water container. If this is not the case, it could have a negative effect on the taste. The reason for this is the fact that the machine is based on the water level in the water tank. It is not finished until the water tank is empty.
The coffee pot differs only slightly from machines from other manufacturers. It has a capacity of 1.25 l and is made of glass. It has a lid and which is easy to open and a good spout. You can use the following functions for your perfect coffee enjoyment:
Operation works via and on/ off switch and a turning knob. It is not quite as intuitive as with other machines but after a while, however, you will get a hang of it.
Coffee quantity: The coffee quantity can be set to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 cups. Most other machines only allow a coffee quantity of 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 cups.
Coffee strength: The coffee strength can be set to mild, medium or strong.
Selecting the coffee bean container (see photo): With the help of the rear turning knob, you can determine from which of the two bean containers the machine should pick up the beans. It is also possible to set the machine to pick up the beans from both containers.
Fineness of the ground: With this function the fineness of the coffee powder can be determined. It can be set from finely ground to coarsely ground coffee.
Timer function: With the timer function you can set any time at which the machine should prepare coffee fully automatically. The timer must be used to set a specific time and to determine both the quantity and the strength of the coffee. You should also specify whether the machine still needs to grind the beans or whether ground coffee has already been filled into the machine. To be able to use this function, the water tank and the coffee bean container must be filled in advance.
The automatic switch-off time can be adjusted if you want the coffee to remain hot in the pot for a longer period of time. This is set to 30 minutes by default. It can also be adjusted at 10-minute intervals between 10 minutes and 120 minutes using a controller. If you want to fill the coffee out of the pot earlier, this is also possible. Thanks to the drip-stop function, the pot can also be removed during the brewing process without the coffee running out. Unfortunately, this drip stop function did not work during our test. Even when we took the jug out of the machine, the broth continued to drip out of the machine.
A special feature of the Philips machine is the so-called Aroma Twister. The Aroma Twister is a nozzle inside the jug and is designed to mix the incoming coffee evenly with the coffee inside the jug. In this way a better aroma is created.
During the grinding process of the coffee beans, the machine generated a noise level of 89 dB. Since the grinding process usually does not last longer than 30 seconds, this volume should be bearable. The machine takes about 5:35 minutes to prepare 4 cups (600 ml) of freshly ground and brewed coffee. Immediately after the coffee is brewed, the coffee in the jug has a temperature of 77 degrees. The heating plate allows the temperature of the coffee to be maintained at around 80 degrees for a maximum of 120 minutes. It depends on the switch-off time, how long the heating plate is in operation.
