If you put the fridge away correctly, every food item will be kept at the cooling temperature it needs to stay fresh and crisp for a long time.
Basic information about storage in the refrigerator
There are different temperatures in the refrigerator, which is why there is the right place for every food in it. Each food item needs a certain temperature to remain aromatic and fresh for as long as possible. But there is another reason why fruit, vegetables, dairy products, fish and meat should each have a specific place in the refrigerator. Because if you keep things tidy, you don't have to search long for the sausage, cheese or vegetables.
Put butter, eggs and drinks in the fridge door
The shelves in the refrigerator door are considered to be one of the warmest places in the refrigerator, at around eight degrees Celsius. Butter and eggs are therefore well kept in the upper part of the door. The middle door area is ideal for storing different tubes and sauces, such as mustard, ready-made sauces, ketchup and mayonnaise. Further down there is enough space for drinks and milk as well as other tall bottles that cannot be stored upright in the refrigerator itself.
Storing durable items in the upper compartment
The upper compartment in the refrigerator also offers one of the warmest locations for food, at around eight to ten degrees Celsius. This is where you should store long-life foods such as pickled cucumbers and olives, jams and hard cheese. This is also a great place to store food leftovers that you will soon want to eat.
Store dairy products and sausage in the middle compartment
The temperature in the middle compartment is about five degrees Celsius. Dairy products such as yoghurt, pudding and quark are best stored in this climate zone. In addition, food that has already been opened, such as opened cups, tins or dips, will keep best in this climate zone. Furthermore, the middle compartment is the ideal place to store fresh and spreadable cheese, semi-hard cheese and sausage. It is highly recommended that you place these foods in suitable boxes. The boxes not only provide an additional guarantee of the freshness of the food but can also be sifted more clearly.
Use the lower compartment to store meat and fish
The bottom compartment is the coolest storage area in the refrigerator and is usually located above the vegetable compartment. At around two to three degrees Celsius, this refrigerator area is ideal for storing food that spoils easily, such as raw meat and fish. Fish and meat should be stored separately from other foods that you want to eat uncooked.
The vegetable tray for raw vegetables and fruit
You can often recognise the vegetable bin by the fact that it is in the form of a drawer. The vegetable drawer is separated from the lowest refrigerator compartment by a glass plate, which ensures that the cold does not reach the vegetables. This is why the vegetable drawer, although it is located at the very bottom of the fridge, is a warm climate zone with eight to ten degrees Celsius. Store fruit, vegetables and salad in it to keep them fresh as long as possible. Cucumbers, peppers, zucchini and avocado, for example, feel most at home here.
Long fresh compartments as a storage zone for extra-long freshness
Large and modern refrigerators often have one or two so-called long fresh compartments, in which a particularly low temperature of just over zero degree Celsius prevails. Food such as meat, fish, sausages, fruit and vegetables can be stored here up to three times longer than in the other compartments. You can also regulate the humidity in these compartments. Meat and sausage products like it to be moderately humid. Fruit and vegetables, on the other hand, remain particularly fresh and crunchy at high humidity.
The freezer compartment in combination appliances
In the deep-freeze area of the refrigerator, temperatures of minus 18 to minus 20 degrees Celsius ensure permanent storage of food suitable for deep-freezing. This is also the ideal place to store frozen finished products and ice cubes. But not only the large combined refrigerator-freezers have such a compartment. In almost every smaller refrigerator there is an extra compartment at the top for storing frozen food or for freezing food.
What does not belong in the refrigerator
Last but not least a small tip for the storage of food. There are some foods that are sensitive to cold and lose their aroma when stored in the refrigerator. Therefore you should store strawberries, tropical fruits such as bananas or pineapples and tomatoes in the pantry. Potatoes and onions are also best stored covered in a dark, not too warm place outside the fridge.
