2nd place: Russell Hobbs Glass Jug Blender Steel 2-in-1

The Russell Hobbs Glas Jug Blender Steel 2-in-1 is recommendable. It convinces with its high-quality and modern design and also the different functions convince in all points.

The only negative aspect is that frozen fruit can only be crushed with the addition of a lot of liquid. Therefore this mixer is rather not suitable for the preparation of homemade ice cream.

4th place: Aicok Blender Smoothie Maker

The Aicok blender is an attractively designed blender with a relatively high filling capacity.

Another positive feature is that the cleaning is very simple and the pureeing of the fruit works very well.

A few disadvantages, such as the relatively high weight, the price, and the complicated snap-in procedure, however, have a negative impact on the evaluation.

  • Do not add too many ingredients to the mixer at once. Otherwise, it may not be able to do everything.
  • Don't let the mixer run too long, otherwise the ingredients could oxidize.
  • Add liquid little by little to get the desired consistency.
  • Try new recipes and let yourself be inspired.
  • Start mixing at a low speed and increase it slowly.

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Result
  • Handling
  • Processing
  • Cleaning
  • Power

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the stand mixers. In these tests, milkshakes are prepared with all machines. First, the scope of delivery and functions are checked and the machines are pre-ranged according to the manufacturer's specifications. The milkshakes are prepared by our testers with the following ingredients: 400 g frozen raspberries, 300 g frozen strawberries, 30 g brown sugar, 1.5 l milk, and some vanilla extract. To puree, the available speed levels are tested. While the mixers are in operation, handling, user-friendliness, and safety are evaluated. The finished shakes are tested for consistency and quality. Finally, the machines are cleaned and the dishwasher resistance of the individual parts is assessed.

In order to rule out errors and to ensure the load of everyday use, each test takes place in several rounds.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

Stand mixers, also known as smoothie makers, mixers or blenders, have become more and more popular in recent years. This is an electric kitchen appliance that is ideal for making shakes, juices, and smoothies. Stand mixers make it child's play to puree fruit, vegetables and other ingredients in just a few seconds. Some models even crush ice cubes into crushed ice for cocktails.

Don't add too many ingredients to the mixer at once. Otherwise, the device might not be able to blend everything smoothly.

A floor mixer is a machine that usually gets a fixed location in the kitchen. Most appliances are dependent on a socket and therefore find a fixed place on the kitchen counter.

There are now various types of stand mixers on the market to choose from. For this reason, it makes sense to first look at the individual variants before making a decision.

The classic model is the multifunctional floor mixer. It can be used to puree food, make drinks and soups and much more. It consists of a base in which the electric motor is located. Above it is a blender jug into which the ingredients are filled. It is sealed by a plastic lid with a rubber seal - so nothing can splash out.
At the bottom of the mixing container, there are knives that work at several thousand revolutions per minute and can, therefore, shred all kinds of food in no time at all. Once everything has been pureed, the lid can be removed and the contents simply poured into a glass or other container. Cleaning is usually very simple - just put the blender jug in the dishwasher.

The second variant is the high-performance blender. Manufacturers usually indicate how many revolutions per minute the appliance can make as an incentive to buy these models. Such devices work with an average of 1,000 watts and can handle 20,000 revolutions per minute - or even more. As these devices work extremely fast, the valuable vitamins and the intensive aroma are fully preserved after pureeing. Of course, these mixers cost considerably more than simple machines - but they are also much more powerful.

The third type is the classic smoothie maker. Recently there has been a real boom in smoothies: You can mix them from a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and eat them either in between, in the evening or as a healthy breakfast. Smoothie Makers usually have a narrow, tall shape and can only crush fruit and vegetables. The volume of the mixing container is also usually smaller than that of a normal blender.

A decisive criterion for the purchase is above all the performance. The more powerful the engine, the easier it is to cut food, even harder.

For example, if you want to make ice from frozen fruit or crush ice cubes, you need a machine with a high wattage, so a high-performance mixer can easily crush a whole avocado, including the healthy kernel. The higher the wattage of a mixer, the faster you can obtain fine puree without lumps. In addition, the speed of most machines can be flexibly adjusted - some of them even infinitely variable.

Standmixer made of glass and stainless steel
Standmixer made of glass and stainless steel

Low-cost mixers can be quickly distinguished from higher-quality models simply by selecting the materials for individual components. The plastic mixing lid, for example, indicates that this is a cheaper model. Qualitative floor mixers, on the other hand, are often made of stainless steel or glass, which is of course much more durable. Plastic scratches with time and becomes worn and dull at some point - especially when hard food is often processed. Ideally, the lid of a mixing container should be made of heat-resistant glass, which can easily pick up and puree hot soups. Glass is also a better choice for hygienic reasons. Of course, you can also choose a model made of stainless steel, but then you can't see the contents - then you always have to remove the lid of the container first.

Knife of the Russel Hobbs Mixer
Knife of the Russel Hobbs Mixer

The quality of the blades located at the bottom of the container plays a decisive role in the mixing result of a blender. On high-quality models, the blades are usually made of hardened stainless steel - a material that easily crushes or purées the hardest foods.
Titanium is also the top grade blade for mixers. However, these are not necessary for normal use - unless you use the blender in the restaurant or several times a day.

Usually, the knives are arranged in opposite directions so that the whole contents are crushed. Good knives are extremely sharp and do not blunt so quickly. If the knives are bad, you will soon notice that they are more likely to spin the food around in the mixer than crush it. Unfortunately, it is not possible to resharpen knives, which is why one should pay attention to a correspondingly high quality when buying. Also, the number of blades is not unimportant: four to six knives are optimal, more are actually not necessary.

It is an advantage to choose a mixer with safety function. As soon as the lid is opened, the knives stop automatically. Therefore, you should never remove the lid while the mixer is still cutting food.

If you do not use a mixer every day, it is often not necessary to leave it on the kitchen counter. However, many models are far too large to be placed in a kitchen cabinet. That's why you should think about how big the volume should be for a blender before you buy. Normal is 1.5 to a maximum of 2 litres. For a single household, it is often enough to decide on a smaller model with 500 ml to 1 litre. However, you should always plan for a little more space, as the food will, of course, take up even more volume at the beginning. If you only want to produce smoothies and juices with a mixer anyway, then a compact smoothie mixer is perfectly sufficient.

Here, too, it makes a difference whether you live alone in the household or whether several people will use the mixer. If you want to make a soup or smoothie for the whole family, the capacity should be 1.5 to 2 litres. A small mixing cup is sufficient for one person alone.

With many blenders, it is possible to adjust the mixing power step by step. High-quality models enable even more precise adjustment by means of stepless regulation. However, there are also mixers with different models to choose from. There are separate programs for soups, ice cream, smoothies, and other purposes, which are even shown on a clear display.

Start mixing at a low speed and increase it slowly.

The programs are regulated in terms of performance and duration exactly as it is necessary to produce a perfect result. After the work is done, the device switches itself off automatically and you only have to pour out the food. This can be especially advantageous for beginners who have never worked with a mixer before.

In addition, a self-cleaning function is practical, which makes it very easy to remove food residues from the mixing cup. This eliminates the need for additional rinsing in the machine. But even without such a program, it is easier to clean the mixing bowl: Simply add some warm water and detergent to the appliance and switch the mixer to the highest setting for a few seconds. Then rinse the container with warm water. This prevents the remains from getting into hard-to-reach places and removes them immediately.

It goes without saying that the handling of stand mixers entails a certain safety risk. After all, this is a machine with sharp blades and an electric motor. In Germany, there are therefore special test marks that guarantee safe use. For this reason, one should pay attention to the fact that a mixer is provided in the best case with the GS or TÜV mark. Stand mixers from abroad, which are often sold particularly cheaply on the Internet, should be avoided. Above all models from the Far East are frequently not certified or examined on their security - here it can even lead to a short circuit with a German current connection.

It is also important that a mixer is as stable as possible. Because in no case a device, which works with 20.000 revolutions in the minute, should move or tilt over alone over the kitchen counter. Most commercially available models are heavy enough anyway so that they remain safely in place during operation. In addition, high-quality mixers are equipped with a special safety device that only allows the mixer to operate when the lid is closed. As soon as the lid is removed, the mixer switches off immediately. Therefore it is recommended to buy only a tested mixer or at least to pay attention to the evaluations of other buyers.

Another topic to consider is the warranty, which is usually included in the manufacturer's specifications. High-quality devices often have a warranty of up to five years - but in case of doubt, it should be at least two years. Because then you can be sure that in case of a defect you will get a repair or an exchange and will not be stuck on the costs.

One aspect that is very often ignored when buying a stand mixer is its volume. Quite a few people are surprised at how high the noise level of some mixers can be when they are put into operation. Of course, it's annoying if you want to mix a smoothie in the early morning and then get complaints from your neighbours because the mixer is so loud. To avoid this, it's worth paying attention to the noise level when choosing a device. As a rule, buyers usually also report directly in reviews if a device is noticeably loud or works very quietly. This point should always be included in the selection.

What is also often underestimated is the seal on the mixing container. Although this is an inconspicuous detail, the first defects are often noticeable right here. The problem: If the seals on the mixing container are broken, you can rarely carry out a repair - usually the appliance has to be disposed of. It is therefore important to check before purchasing whether other buyers have problems with the seals. If such a problem occurs when there is still a warranty, it can be solved, but it is still annoying. It is, therefore, better to invest a little more in a good model where even small components are of high quality.

For kitchen mixers it is the same as for all other electrical appliances: They are now available in a wide variety of designs and qualities, which of course also influences the price. In principle, the price range for stand mixers is very wide. That's very good if you have a small budget and don't want to spend much on a mixer, but many prospective buyers still find it difficult to make the right choice.

For example, the cheapest mixers are already available in stores from around 30 euros, while expensive high-performance mixers can cost 1,000 euros and more. Here you should orientate yourself on what you want to produce with your mixer and how often you will use it. For someone who wants to mix smoothies and soups with it every day, the purchase of a high-quality model is certainly worthwhile. For a rather rare use, it is sufficient to decide on a device in the middle price range. Either way, it is recommended to always choose a mixer that is characterized by good workmanship and high performance. So you can be sure to enjoy it for a long time.

Stand mixers were last tested by Stiftung Warentest in October 2016. Of the 12 machines tested, three scored "Good", six "Satisfactory", two "Sufficient" and one even "Poor". The test winner is JB 5160 von Braun with a rating of 2.1. The clear loser is the KitchenAid Artisan Magnetic Drive Blender with a 5.0. The final score consisted of five categories: Preparation (40%), handling (25%), shelf life (15%), environment and health (10%) and safety (10%).

The twelve test devices had to prepare a green smoothie, ice mix drinks, mayonnaise, pancake dough, nut sauce, baby porridge, and cold vegetable soup. Also, crush ice cubes and chop parsley and onions. For a direct comparison of the results, everything except the ice cream was prepared with a standard hand blender.

The result of the chopped onions and parsley is satisfactory to inadequate. The Russell Hobbs Illumina simply threw the vegetables wildly through the container. Mayonnaise and pancake dough can be mixed very well with almost any appliance. The nut mixture was particularly successful with the Vitamix and the Bianco di Puro, eight mixers capitulated to this task. These included the Bosch Silentmixx, which also had problems with baby porridge. There were too large pieces left for him to get small about. The green smoothie, the ice mix drinks, and the cold vegetable soup could be prepared well to very well by most blenders. Only three could crush ice cubes well.

To determine the shelf life, the blender was filled with a mixture of newspaper and water. The machines had to mix this mixture in 1250 cycles. One cycle consisted of five one-minute cycles, each with a break of one minute, followed by 20 minutes for cooling. This simulated a use of more than eight years. The KitchenAid stand mixer did not withstand this endurance test, the jug overheated and a drive belt broke. According to Stiftung Warentest, the mixer would theoretically not have survived a year in daily operation. The Illumina von Russell Hobbs and AEGs SB5700BK also failed during the endurance test. Only the Braun JB 5160 and the Vitamix Professional survived all 1250 cycles.

In terms of environment and health, sealing, energy consumption and noise levels were assessed. The average result was sufficient. Especially the noise level was critical for the stand mixers. The loudest was the KitchenAid with 90 decibels, closely followed by Gastroback, Krups, Russell Hobbs, Vitamix and the WMF Kult pro Power with 88 to 89 decibels. All mixers are louder than a washing machine in the spin cycle. The Bosch Silentmixx lives up to its name and only mixes at 82 decibels.

During the safety test, particular importance was attached to whether the rotating knives were also in operation when the lid was open. According to Stiftung Warentest, all but one of the devices pose a safety risk in this respect. Only the KitchenAid has a mechanism that stops the knives as soon as the lid is opened.

Two stand mixers that have been tested by Stiftung Warentest have also been evaluated by us in our practical test. Among them Philips HR2195/08 which was also rated "satisfactory" by us, among other things because of its handling. The Braun JB 5160 does not make it to the first place with us. The Aicok and Russell Hobbs models, both of which were not tested by Stiftung Warentest, were more convincing in the overall comparison.

In addition to stand mixers, Purée sticks and Smoothie-Mixer, which we have also extensively tested, are also suitable for smaller quantities.

If you need more power and features, we recommend a food processor, which we also tested thoroughly. In addition to mixing, a food processor also offers functions such as stirring and rubbing.

For small quantities shredders are wonderful. In addition, there is no need to add liquid to them so that the food can be collected.

How do we test at

Live and authentic: We get the devices into our Hamburg test laboratory. Here we take a close look at everything.

Each test is preceded by an extensive search:

  • Which suppliers are on the market?
  • What current products are there?
  • What are the comparison criteria?
  • What tests are we going to run?
  • What is the test procedure?

When everything's settled, we'll bring the devices to us. For each product the test procedure, the measured values and product properties are documented in detail. We create photos and videos. We evaluate the results for you, summarize everything in a test report and calculate the test grade.

Have fun!
