  • When choosing a suction wiping robot, pay attention to the way the unit is driven: system driving styles are suitable for larger, open spaces, whereas a random driving style is optimal for smaller rooms, as the surfaces are thoroughly cleaned several times.
  • The type and colour of the floor also play an important role: some units may erroneously perceive striped surfaces or shiny floors as an obstacle or abyss and stop in response.
  • Before you let your new household helper do his work on his own, you should observe how he behaves with actual abysses, such as stairs. It is common for the robot to reach far over the edge, but it should not tip over forwards.
  • For thorough cleaning, both the brushes and rags as well as the robot's sensors should be checked regularly.
 

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and established the following test criteria:

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for suction and wiping robots. First, the devices are put into operation as recommended by the manufacturer and, if available, the corresponding app is downloaded. In doing so, attention is already paid to handling and user-friendliness. All possible control options, whether via the app, remote control, voice control or on the device itself, are tested in detail. Menu navigation and functional scope are of particular importance. Furthermore, the functions of the robots are tested. These are then tested in the cleaning runs.

In order to be able to judge the cleaning result, animal litter is scattered on carpet and laminate flooring. Animal litter is also spread in places that are difficult to reach, such as next to chair and table legs, corners, edges and transitions. The result is recorded before and after pictures. During the cleaning process, the volume of the devices is measured. The robots must clean the room until the battery is empty. Finally, the result is evaluated for each device. The wiping function is also tested in this way during the further course of the test. Finally, the effort required for cleaning and maintenance is assessed.

In order to exclude errors and to ensure that the device is not subjected to the stress of everyday use, each test is carried out in several runs.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final mark is finally calculated objectively from the test criteria using an algorithm.

The little household helper usually looks like a normal vacuum cleaner robot. Small, as flat as possible and fitted with wheels so that the vacuum cleaner can make its tour of the home.

In some devices, a smaller, round tower that towers on the top of the case catches the eye. This elevation houses laser technology with which the robot scans its surroundings. A closer look reveals more small openings on the sides and bottom of the little helper. These are infrared sensors that he needs for navigation.

The 2-in-1 function includes vacuuming and mopping. Some appliances supplement these tasks and even dry the floors.

While the robot makes its way through the apartment, small lateral brushes sweep the dirt particles into the middle under the device. There the large brush picks up the particles and transports them directly into the dirt opening, behind which the waste is collected. The additional suction power of the motor ensures that cleaning is also thorough.

Bonded or smeared dirt and fine dust are cleaned with a damp cloth. The wiping cloth, practically attached to the underside of the little helper, is either moistened by hand or fed from a water tank. The water tank transfers detergent and water drop by drop to the wipe so that cleaning is thorough but not too wet. The wipe can also be used dry. Then it is used to polish the floor.

Some devices do not have a water tank. The user removes the wiping pad in between to remoisten it.

There are basically two variants of robots. The first group vacuums and wipes in a single step, some also clean dry immediately. The other part of the units works through the steps one after the other. Either they vacuum or they wipe. For this purpose, the dirt collection container is replaced with a water tank. On some units, the wiping function is only a small addition. Here you should pay attention to the demands you have on the little helper before you buy.

Tip

Let a robot, which has a separate wiping function, still work with a dry wipe in suction mode. This has two advantages: Firstly, it collects even the smallest particles of dust. Secondly, the Velcro fastener for the cloth on the underfloor does not stick to fluff, carpet particles and hair.

The engineers have developed two methods of navigation.

  • The simpler system works on the random principle. Seemingly chaotic, the robot chooses its path through space. If it encounters an obstacle, it turns by an ingenious number of degrees and travels in a diagonal line to the next edge. In this way, the robot gets closer to its goal and cleans some areas several times. In the end, he covers the further distance than his precise colleague but leaves a clean floor behind.
  • Equipped with the latest laser technology, the second group of robots saves quite a bit of distance. Mapping or mapping are the keywords. The built-in lasers orient themselves in space and create a map. In this way, they recognize walls, furniture and objects and determine the best cleaning route. Only then do they begin with the actual work. If these industrious helpers need to recharge the battery in between, they can still remember the last location and continue with the interrupted cleaning.

Both model variants can also be used on another floor. Devices with mapping function create this map again before each cleaning. This enables them to clean different rooms or levels.

Many manufacturers still offer special cleaning modes on their devices.

For example:

  • Spot cleaning: A smaller, dirty area is to be cleaned.
  • Edge mode: Only the edges of the room should be cleaned.
  • MAX-mode: Carpets are vacuumed with increased power for more thorough cleaning.
  • Shadow mode: Only the floor under furniture should be cleaned.

Infrared sensors replaced the robot's eyes. These are located at the front, the sides and the underbody, among other things. This enables it to detect obstacles in front of and underneath it. It can drive around furniture legs, stop in front of stairs and roll along the edge.

Extra-large wheels enable many suction and wiping robots to climb door thresholds and carpets from about one and a half to two and a half cm. Dust and dirt are also diligently removed from under sofas, beds and some furniture. The height of the device is of great importance.

The equipment sometimes includes a radar system with ultrasound. The cleaning helper uses it to detect objects and barriers in front of it to prevent collisions. If the robot touches an object in the heat of the moment, an impact edge prevents damage. This part of the housing is flexible and gives way when touched.

Is it possible to remove certain areas from the cleaning zone? Two different technologies are offered as equipment variants. Some robots recognize a designed magnetic tape as a barrier and leave out the marked area. In this case the magnetic tape is included in the scope of delivery. Devices with app control and mapping offer state-of-the-art solutions. The user draws virtual boundaries and determines which areas are to be cleaned and which are not. The apartment is thereby divided into zones.

Many robots that vacuum and wipe in one step detect carpets and drive around them with a wet wipe. If they are only in vacuum mode, they also clean the rugs.

It is not yet possible without human intervention. However, regular work steps are quickly completed and soon become second nature.

For the wipe mode:

  • Remove the dirt tank if necessary.
  • Fill the water tank and latch in.
  • Moisten a fresh wipe and attach it to the underbody.
  • Perhaps lay out the magnetic tape.
  • Empty the water tank at the end.
  • Remove the wipe and add it to the wash or rinse and dry it.
  • Replace the wipe two or three times a year.

For the suction mode:

  • Empty the dirt container.
  • After dusty use, clean the sensors with a cotton swab or soft cloth.
  • Knock out or replace the filter.
  • Clean the cleaning brushes from time to time and remove jammed hair.
  • Cleaning brushes rarely need to be replaced.

It is important to remove small objects from the path of the robot so that it can follow its path as quickly and effortlessly as possible. Cables are rolled up and fixed out of reach. Thin carpets with fringes should be folded up so that they are under the rug. Chairs can be placed under the table. Maybe some of the furniture and flowerpots can be moved around the room a little after the robot's first attempts so that it can reach narrow areas even better.

In times of mobile phones and the like, charging cables and power supply units are hidden or lying around openly in every home. For many, another cable for the new cleaning friend is not very important. You connect it manually to the power supply after the work is done.

Those who prefer it more elegant can reach for the robot with the charging station. The advantage of the charging station is that they consider most devices like home and return there after cleaning is completed. With little effort for the user, they refresh their charge for the next tour. In addition, they can charge in between, if they have not managed to get the whole living space in one go. If a mapping system is on board, the wiping and suction robot then continues cleaning where it left off.

The charging station needs a place on the wall with a free area in front of it so that the little helper can orientate himself in the apartment when starting. When he starts the station again, his sensors must be able to detect it easily.

In principle, the robot cleans hard floors such as laminate, tiles or parquet and carpets equally well. In suction mode, it also switches back and forth between the different floor types without any problems. For high carpet edges, models with larger wheels are suitable. The manufacturers provide information on the height of the long-floor carpets, which the cleaning assistant can handle effortlessly. These are the same dimensions that the robot overcomes even with door sills. If the home has a lot of carpets or pets leave a lot of hair on them, it may be worth investing in an appliance with suction power reinforcement.

Constant dampness damages the carpets, therefore rugs should be bypassed in the wiping function. The robot automatically recognizes which type of floor it is walking on or magnetic tape or virtual wall stops it.

Tip

If there are moisture-sensitive laminate or parquet floors in the apartment, pay attention to the amount of water emitted by the suction and wiping robot when purchasing.

The correct instructions can be found in the manufacturer's operating instructions. Since a lot of electronics are used and the water tanks are made of fine, thin plastic, you should take these instructions to heart. Otherwise, the tank could get cracks and be damaged.

There are special cleaning agents for wiping robots which are not aggressive and can be used without any problems. Often manufacturers offer floor cleaners for their own equipment. This way you are always on the safe side.

If only dust is to be wiped, you may decide to use pure water. A microfibre wipe can already provide some cleaning power itself due to the structure of the fibres. If you nevertheless add cleaning agents suitable for the respective floor type, make sure that they are not power cleaners or agents containing alcohol. These could attack the material.

Manufacturers have built combination devices that perform both functions in one step. Others are made for successive suction and wiping performance. But are these the only special features?

Technical data

The height of the body including wheels varies from 7.9 to 10 cm, the diameter ranges from about 26 - 35 cm. The volume of the engine is also an important value and is between 50 and 68 dB. As far as the suction power of the engine is concerned, you can find devices with 1200 Pascal, others even manage 2000 Pascal.

Capacities

The water tank holds about 150 - 750 ml and thus wiping areas of 80 to 180 m² are possible. However, a larger water tank does not necessarily mean that more area is wiped. Battery power and the amount of moisture released also play a role. Dirt containers take up around 300 ml, in some cases even a proud 900 ml of dust and dirt. The manufacturers specify battery lifetimes of 60 minutes and more, while high-quality robots manage up to 140 minutes. In practice, however, the specifications may vary.

Equipment

Different brushes clean animal hair or heavy dirt. Instead of the main brush, a robot uses a direct suction device so that particularly long hairs do not wrap around the brush. The range includes HEPA filters and special filters for fine dust, which are suitable for allergy sufferers.


Some robots can be programmed for a specific cleaning start or cleaning duration. The higher the quality of the equipment, the more high-tech is on board. This starts with the number of sensors and the quality of the navigation system. In addition, there is the convenient remote control with a handheld transmitter or via app even on the road. The work can also be coordinated by voice control such as Alexa or other smart home devices. A robot connected via WLAN can be supplied with new firmware updates and keeps its software up-to-date.

The wide range of products on offer makes it easy to find suitable equipment for your own needs. Before you buy, you should think about the equipment you want and the special features of your living space. The following points should be considered in detail:

Size and equipment of the living spaces

The dimensions of the apartment should match the battery capacity and the capacity of the dirt and water tanks. This optimizes the necessary number of cleaning tours through the apartment.

If you ask yourself how many carpet runners are available, this will help you decide whether to use a combined suction and wiping robot or a robot that does the work one after the other.

Many narrow passages require a smaller robot body. How high can the cleaning helper be if it is to slip under the sofa, cupboards and bed? The metre rule gives precise information. Small rooms with a lot of furniture or decorative items on the floor benefit from a cleaning assistant that creates maps and works precisely.
