The steamer of homeasy convinces strongly in his overall result, even if a careful handling is recommended because of his hard bristles.

The steamer convinces with its features and the ironing result. However, it is unwieldy and offers only a small amount of water.

This steamer shows an average ironing result, as water stains occur during use. However, the device can score with its handling and the warranty period.

The steamer impresses above all with its high scope of delivery and the price-performance ratio, but is not suitable for a small suitcase.

This Design-Steamer fulfils its purpose, despite the high water consumption and the bad operating instructions.

  • Do not hold the appliance too close to clothing to prevent water stains
  • Removes bacteria and bad odours
  • Allow the unit to cool down before stowing away
  • Suitable for tap water
  • Allow clothes to cool completely before hanging them in your wardrobe

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Ironing result
  • handling
  • Scope of delivery
  • water consumption
  • design

In order to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the steamer. In these, a T-shirt is steam smoothed and then examined to see whether water stains occur and how crease-resistant it is. The shirt is made of the same material in all test runs and is always the same size. During use, handling, ergonomics and water consumption are assessed. The warm-up time is also measured and checked for intelligibility. In addition, the scope of delivery is extensively checked for additional attachments and their function.

Tester steams Shirt
How crease-resistant is the shirt after steaming with this test device?

In order to rule out mistakes and to ensure the stress of everyday use, each test takes place in several rounds.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection
Our product selection is based on observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

What exactly is that supposed to be, a steamer? Have you asked yourself this question lately? Currently you can find regular advertisements for these devices. And quite rightly so, as you will notice right away.

Have you ever thought about how big textile retailers smooth out the clothes that many customers try on every day? A little tip: you can't do this with a conventional iron. That's exactly what steamer were developed for. You could say that this is a very handy but effective pocket-sized steam iron. But more about that later.

To understand exactly how a steamer works, let's look briefly at the individual parts. Depending on the manufacturer, the equipment consists of a water tank connected to the heating element, a hose and a support rod. By means of a built-in pump, the hot steam is directed to the nozzle and then evenly distributed. In addition, most models have an integrated brush head. This helps to straighten the fibres of the clothing. But that's not all a steamer can do. In addition to smooth clothes, the hot steam also refreshes the colours, kills bacteria and even keeps moths away. The devices are therefore not only suitable for blouses. It can also be used for hats or even second hair. So it was actually foreseeable that these practical helpers would sooner or later also find their way into private households.

Once you have decided on a model, you should pay attention to other important details.

It is also advisable to take a closer look at the equipment. The aforementioned brush head, for example, is not necessarily part of the basic equipment of every manufacturer, but is essential for an effective result.

Think carefully beforehand about the purpose for which you would like to use the steamer. Should the appliance help you on your travels or even make your daily housework easier? For very frequent applications or many items of clothing, a device with a large water tank and metal holding rods is worthwhile. But if you only want to use the steamer sporadically, a device with a smaller tank and plastic holding rod is also very useful. Especially with holding bars made of metal the purchase of an appropriate protective glove is recommended. The handle can heat up very easily.

As with all technical devices, a few performance data are not insignificant. For a steamer this means in concrete terms: Pay attention to a steam pressure of at least 20 g / min. 1,000 watts are sufficient as power.

So that you can enjoy your new helper for a long time, it is worth investing in special cleaning agents offered by some manufacturers. These can be descaling agents, cleaning agents for the water tank or lubricants for the joints of the holding rods. It is best to get advice before buying.

To prevent the steamer from calcifying, you should empty the water container thoroughly after each use and only refill it immediately before further use.
Depending on the hardness of the water, however, calcification may also occur under the precautionary measures mentioned. These deposits settle in the sensitive parts and damage the steamer permanently. The producers therefore recommend regular descaling. Special products from the manufacturers are just as suitable for this as standard products from the drugstore, such as those used for the coffee machine. Let the agent work in well, rinse out and wipe dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. Microfibre cloths are very suitable for this purpose. Please note that calcification is usually not covered by the warranty.

In general, the water tank should be cleaned regularly with detergent (also between the individual descaling processes) so that fluff and dirt have no chance. Otherwise, unattractive stains may appear on your clothing.

If the rods of the handles are made of metal, the material and the corresponding threads should be lubricated regularly with grease or oil. Please remove any residues well so that nothing sticks to the clothing later. Straight grease stains are very difficult to remove.

The brush head should also be regularly cleaned of dust and dirt so that it does not leave any residue on the clothing.

Can I use my tap water for this and how do I test the water hardness?
In general, it is no problem to fill normal tap water into the steamer. As described above, regular decalcification is especially useful if you want to rule out consequential damage and suffer from very hard water.

But what is hard water? Water hardness refers to certain compounds in water. These are mainly calcium and magnesium compounds, but also ions of strontium or barium. Some of these substances cannot dissolve properly in water and form hard or soft water depending on the quantity. The soft version is better suited for any type of application where water needs to be heated - including your steamer. Hard water, on the other hand, leads much more easily to the dreaded calcification. By the way, hard water is often found in regions with a lot of limestone, while soft water is more likely to be found in rock types such as granite or basalt.

To determine your water hardness, special test strips are very well suited, which are available on the Internet or from well-assorted specialist retailers for just a few euros.

If the water hardness in your region is very high, you can also fill the device with distilled water. You can also order this easily on the Internet.

The steamer is especially popular for a holiday or business trip due to its handy size. It can be stowed away in a suitcase, for example, in just a few simple steps. However, before the appliance disappears into it, the water tank should first be completely emptied and dried. Then it is recommended to disassemble all mountable parts. This sounds more complicated than it actually is. With most manufacturers, disassembly is done in just a few simple steps. If not included, the purchase of a protective bag is worthwhile. Some manufacturers even score points with a foldable water tank - before buying, consider this!
Take care not to bend power cables etc. so that no damage can occur. Afterwards pack everything in a towel or a blanket, so that also smaller impacts from the outside are no problem. Please keep in mind that your suitcase will be treated "rough" at the airport and that you will protect the steam trowel inside well.

A steamer has many advantages, but also a few disadvantages that we don't want to hide from you.

  • The machines are very handy and much lighter than a conventional iron.
  • Its size makes it an ideal travel companion.
  • You don't need an ironing board!
  • The steamer is very easy to assemble and disassemble and therefore very easy to understand even for inexperienced persons.
  • You can easily smooth several pieces of clothing one behind the other.
  • The machine works much more gently than an iron, because it works without much pressure. Steaming even refreshes the colours, straightens the fibres and kills bacteria.
  • The device is ideally suited for sensitive textiles.

  • Unfortunately, the units have to be cleaned and descaled regularly. In addition the water hardness and the recommendations of the manufacturer consider. Especially heavy clothing, such as linen, can unfortunately only be smoothed insufficiently by the steamer.
  • The clothes must be hung up accordingly for a good result. This is the only way to reach hard-to-reach areas with the appliance.
  • Please make sure never to use the steamer in front of sensitive materials such as fabric wallpaper. These could be seriously damaged by the resulting moisture.
  • Depending on the duration of use, frequent refilling of the water tank may be necessary. For this reason, you should consider how often you want to use the device before you buy it.

Even if a steamer can't completely replace a conventional iron, the devices are useful helpers in everyday life. Especially business travellers who depend on smooth shirts appreciate the advantages.
No matter for what application you fancy a steamer - it's a good investment! And it's also a relatively inexpensive investment. Even if the upper limits are open as always, you can get good equipment for about 30 euros.
The apparel industry has known for a long time what it has to offer the appliances. Without their help, it would hardly be possible to bring affordable textiles onto the market, as the wage costs for work on the ironing board alone would increase immeasurably. And niche companies, such as wig makers or hat makers, also rely on the handy steamers. The advantage is obvious: a hat cannot be ironed with a conventional iron and valuable second hair can easily be brought back into shape without being damaged. The steam straightener works with hot steam, but it never gets as hot as the soleplate of an iron. This is easy on many materials and therefore also on your wallet.

How do we test at

Live and authentic: We get the devices into our Hamburg test laboratory. Here we take a close look at everything.

Each test is preceded by an extensive search:

  • Which suppliers are on the market?
  • What current products are there?
  • What are the comparison criteria?
  • What tests are we going to run?
  • What is the test procedure?

When everything's settled, we'll bring the devices to us. For each product the test procedure, the measured values and product properties are documented in detail. We create photos and videos. We evaluate the results for you, summarize everything in a test report and calculate the test grade.

Have fun!
