1st place: HiKam A7

Test seal: HiKam A7, Rating good

The surveillance camera from HiKam has a very high resolution. You have the possibility to choose between "SD" and "HD" picture quality. Another advantage is the sensitive motion detection, almost every motion has been recognized. Another positive feature is the alarm, which is just as reliable as the motion detector if it is activated. Once the device is connected to the Internet, the connection with Wi-Fi antenna or LAN cable runs perfectly.

2nd place: ieGeek 1080 P

The security camera from ieGeek seems to be cheaply processed. However, the first impression does not reflect in the final result. The device convinces by a good picture quality as well as a sensitive motion detection. Almost every movement is captured by the camera. The connection is also stable and reliable. Via the Wi-Fi antenna, the transmission is a bit worse and can be a bit delayed, but that's not a big problem.

3rd place: Lupus Electronics LE201

The Lupus surveillance camera made the best impression when I unpacked the devices. It is manufactured to a high quality standard. The quality of the images also makes a high-quality impression. The images are pin sharp during the day and at night. Another positive feature is the sensitive motion detection, which captures almost every image. A little oversensitive for my preference. The connection with the Internet is good. If you are connected to the Internet via the Wi-Fi antenna, the transmission may be delayed for a few seconds. All in all, it's a great surveillance camera, but there's one problem: the application urgently needs to be overhauled to be compatible with all devices.

4th place: Ctronics WLAN IP Kamera Outdoor

The Ctronics security camera has the worst image quality of all tested products. You get the feeling that there is a grey veil over the image. The colors don't make a natural impression. Nevertheless, you can see everything important on the pictures. The motion detection is not affected and perceives almost every movement. The connection works perfectly, with the Wi-Fi antenna a little slower than with the LAN cable.

5th place: COOAU 1080 P

The COOAU security camera provides a good image quality. The motion detection does a reliable job and detects almost every movement. Immediately after a motion is detected, you will receive a push notification on your mobile phone. A big disadvantage is the connection of the camera to the internet. The setup worked fine, but the connection can always break unexpectedly. In addition to that the transmission is sometimes slightly delayed.

Try to adjust the motion detection area so that there are no objects in the picture that can easily move in a case of a wind gust.

If you use an SD card to save the data, the images will be saved even if you are not connected to the Internet.

According to the regulatory authorities, recordings can be stored for a maximum of 72 hours. In special cases, a longer period is also permitted.

If the cable of the surveillance camera is too short, you can use an extension cable to place the camera at the desired location.

With certain applications for Smartphone, Tablet or PC you are able to see several cameras bundled on one screen, even from different brands on one screen.

Test Procedure
In the preparation of the test, we have defined practical requirements and the following test criterias:

  • Handling
  • Picture Quality
  • Motion Detection
  • Connection
  • Weather Resistance

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we created several tests for the surveillance cameras. In these tests all cameras are installed inside as well as outside. The first step is to evaluate the installation and assembly. While the devices are in position, the connection via LAN and Wi-Fi is checked for stability and time shift. The connection to the smartphone is also assessed. If the devices are installed outside - in a garden - the image quality of all devices is checked during the day and at night. The result is documented with still images. In addition, the motion detector and alarm function are activated to test them. The devices are exposed to all weather conditions for several months to test their strength. Inside, the process is repeated: the image quality of the cameras is checked day and night. When the motion detector and alarm are activated, the sensitivity of the sensors is tested. Finally, the storage capacity of the surveillance cameras is checked.

We also tested the picture quality at night

In order to rule out errors and to ensure that they are resistant to everyday use, each test takes place in several rounds.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection
Our product selection is based on observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Retailers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

The central component of practically all surveillance cameras is a sensitive CMOS sensor. CMOS is the abbreviation for "Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor" and describes a semiconductor sensor made of metal oxide that registers the light waves and converts them into electrical signals that can be further processed or stored. A wide-angle lens is located in front of the sensor. Modern surveillance cameras today make it possible to take pictures in HD quality with 1,280 x 720 pixels to 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.

With different models, it is also possible to take still pictures with a resolution of at least 2 MP. The connection between the camera and the recording device or monitor is made either via a cable or wirelessly via WLAN. Many surveillance cameras are equipped with a motion sensor that only activates the camera when motion is detected and a slot for memory cards (SD or Micro SD cards) to store video recordings.

The security cameras have their eyes fixed on the garden.

The range of surveillance cameras and in particular IP cameras has grown continuously in recent years. The reason for this is the sharp rise in the need for security among many people. In this guide, we have compiled everything you need to know about surveillance cameras for private use and show you what you should pay attention to if you are buying a surveillance camera.

What is a surveillance camera?

HiKam A7 lens.
All cameras at once.

A surveillance camera is a video camera used to observe a specific area. It is often connected to a recording device or IP network. Cameras and recorders used to be relatively expensive and required people to monitor the recordings. However, analysis of footage has been simplified by automated software that organizes digital video footage into a searchable database and by video analysis software (such as VIRAT and HumanID). Motion sensors can drastically reduce the amount of video footage by only recording video when motion is detected.

How do we test at

Live and authentic: We get the devices into our Hamburg test laboratory. Here we take a close look at everything.

Each test is preceded by an extensive search:

  • Which suppliers are on the market?
  • What current products are there?
  • What are the comparison criteria?
  • What tests are we going to run?
  • What is the test procedure?

When everything's settled, we'll bring the devices to us. For each product the test procedure, the measured values and product properties are documented in detail. We create photos and videos. We evaluate the results for you, summarize everything in a test report and calculate the test grade.

Have fun!
