The Beer Brew Barrel from Braukönig is our test winner. The individual steps are explained clearly and easily in the operating instructions. Especially cool is that you can choose which beer you want to brew depending on the dosage of the seasoning. The final result is impressive. Even though we intended to brew a Pilsner, and the end product is more like wheat beer, it clearly tastes the best compared to the other beers we brew. This is greatly influenced by carbonic acid, which makes for a pleasant tingling sensation. The whitecap is also impressive. I must confess that I am positively surprised by the end product. Nevertheless, I would prefer a beer from the supermarket.

  • Beer type can be selected by the user
  • A good carbonic acid content
  • Attractive shite cap
  • Tastes like beer

  • Plastic fermenter
  • Doesn't taste like a lager

The yeast is weighed.
Preparing the yeast batch.

First of all, you have to clean the fermenter thoroughly. Then you make your own beer wort. In the instructions, you will find recipe ideas and the corresponding proportions. We have chosen the premium beer with 4.8%. After you have dosed your beer seasoning, you pour the mixture into a pot with 2 litres of water at about 70-80°C.

To make sure that the wort mixture dissolves evenly, we used an egg whisk for stirring. Then you pour the brew concentrate into the barrel. In addition, pour 3 litres of freshly boiled water into the barrel. Stir it once more. Now let the brew cool down for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile you can already prepare the yeast mixture. Stir 3 g yeast with water at a temperature of approx. 30 °C. Leave the yeast mixture to swell for 15 minutes. When 30 minutes have passed and the brew has cooled down to about 30 °C, fermentation starts and the yeast is added to the brew. Fill half of the fermentation tube with water, close the lid and press the rubber stopper into the opening in the lid.

The fermentation lasts about 4-7 days. When no more bubbles escape through the fermentation tube, the fermentation process is complete.

Create food for secondary fermentation

Before the secondary fermentation can begin, you first fill the green beer into another container. Without stirring up the yeast. After you have thoroughly cleaned the fermentation tank, you can fill the green beer back into the brew barrel. During secondary fermentation, sugar is added once again, which is converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide by the yeast during secondary fermentation. You dissolve the sugar in water which you have heated before. When the temperature has cooled down to 20 - 30 °C, you can add the "food" to the young beer in the brew barrel.

Secondary fermentation

To initiate secondary fermentation, you pour the young beer into your beer bottles using a measuring cup and a funnel. We have decided on swing-top bottles. The bottle can now be stored in a dark room at room temperature for about 6-7 days.

To mature, place the beer upright in the refrigerator for at least 4-5 weeks.

The finished beer is poured.
Now it's almost time - the finished beer is poured.

The beer from Braukönig was the most convincing of all the beer brewing sets tested. Compared to the other beers, the Pils has a good carbon dioxide content. Irritating is the light banana note, which is strongly reminiscent of wheat. But actually the aim was to brew the classic of the beer, a Pils. In the aftertaste, however, a tart note typical for the Pils becomes apparent.

There is nothing wrong with the whitecap. A beautiful, white and firm foam is created, which finally crowns the beer.

The finished poured beer.
Time for the long-awaited tasting.

Overview: Home Brewing Kit

How do you like this product?

Have you used new (empty) bottles for filling or washed out beer bottles that have a swing top? Does a screw cap work?
Of course, new bottles are always ideal, but you can also use deposit bottles (glass) from the trade with a swing top. In this case, however, always fill the bottles with boiling water to avoid hairline cracks! It is also best to replace the red rubber bands of the swing tops. For bottles with screw caps, make sure that they are tight and made of glass. Plastic is not recommended as it will not withstand the pressure.
What is the shelf life of the ingredients?
Usually 2 years.
What material is the keg made of?
The brew keg is made of food-grade plastic HD-PE2.
