1st place: Bissell Crosswave Cordless 3-in-1

Test seal: Bissell Crosswave Cordless 3-in-1, Rating good

The Bissell - Crosswave Cordless 3-in-1 does a very good job and can also clean tricky situations well. However, on the carpet, the vacuum cleaner does not perform as well as on laminate. The hard floor cleaner cleans itself, which saves wear and time. The brush can be easily attached to the station and can dry there. The other accessories must be stored externally while drying. All in all, this device is a good support in a household with animals or children who occasionally bring dirt into the house.

2nd place: Kärcher FC 3 Cordless

The FC 3 Cordless by Kärcher has washable rollers, but also a weak battery that needs to be charged for a long time. Another disadvantage is the strong pulling force, which requires a constant retraction. This makes it quite exhausting for the arm in the long run.

  • Clean the floor backwards towards the door to avoid footprints.
  • To avoid overfilling the dirty water tank, it is recommended to fill only half the freshwater tank.
  • When cleaning, do not stay too long in one place so that the floor does not get too wet.
  • With oiled or waxed wooden floors, care should also be taken not to linger too long on one spot, as otherwise the oil or wax may be removed from the wood.
  • Sensitive floors, e.g. untreated cork floors, should be checked for water resistance in an inconspicuous place.
  • If too much foam forms on the floor, check the dirty water tank and use the "Foam-Stop-Remedy".

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Handling
  • Cleaning result
  • Equipment

In order to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the hard floor cleaners. First, the scope of delivery and functions are checked. Before the tests are carried out, the equipment is prepared as recommended by the manufacturer. In order to put the cleaning power to the test, the equipment must remove liquids, damp dirt (a mixture of soil and water) and dried cola as well as coffee from laminate flooring. During the cleaning process, the handling is assessed and the volume of the instruments is measured. It is also checked whether the hard floor cleaners leave streaks behind. In further runs, we check the cleaning at corners and edges and the battery life. Finally, the cleaning effort of the rollers and the rest of the equipment is assessed.

In order to rule out errors and to ensure the load of everyday use, each test takes place in several runs.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

What is a hard floor cleaner and what are its advantages?

Today, hard floor cleaners are not only used in the professional sector but are also enjoying increasing popularity in private households. The modern cleaners are both cheap to buy and maintain. In addition, they are small, handy and easy to use. Unlike classic vacuum cleaners, they are cleaned with a hard floor cleaner with the aid of water.
The hard floor cleaner thus carries out two work steps at the same time, such as vacuuming and wiping in one "wash up". Depending on the model, triple systems are also available which also offer a dryer function.

A hard floor cleaner is a real all-rounder. It is suitable for thorough cleaning of various floor coverings and surfaces such as tiles, textile floors, carpets, stone, sealed parquet, laminate or PVC. Not only dust and impurities can be removed in one operation, but also damp dirt. In addition, the trade also offers models that can absorb liquids. A hard floor cleaner can, therefore, be used versatilely and according to the requirements in interiors, balcony or terrace.

A hard floor cleaner can be used in a variety of ways and according to requirements indoors, balconies or terraces

.

A hard floor cleaner offers a wide range of advantages. The cleaning device not only provides valuable help with large-area cleaning but also with small household mishaps. For example, a broken glass of juice can be quickly removed without you running the risk of being injured by the broken glass. Your children or your pet have brought half the garden of shoes and paws into the house? With a hard floor cleaner the damp dirt is quickly removed.

In terms of speed, a hard floor cleaner is also far superior to manual equipment. Due to the combination of wet cleaning and dry cleaning, cleaning is done quickly. The intensive cleaning power also reduces the working time considerably. Due to the enormous wiping power, you do not have to wipe the same spot several times for light soiling. If the dirt has dried on, the cleaner saves you the trouble of scrubbing.

In addition to the high cleaning performance, another advantage is the gentle handling. Instead of removing the dirt in a stooped posture and high effort, wiping is done with a hard floor cleaner in an upright posture. Rubber gloves to protect the hands and the permanent rinsing out of the sponge or cleaning rag are also a thing of the past. Not only your back is protected, but also your floor. Hard floor cleaners work without straining the surface and leave no scratches on laminate or smooth surfaces.

A hard floor cleaner is also extremely energy efficient. While manual cleaning sometimes requires several litres of water, the water requirement for these appliances is reduced by up to 70%. Thus an area of up to 100 sqm can be cleaned with approx. 800 ml of water. Hard floor cleaners are also extremely energy-efficient when it comes to electricity consumption. While a commercial vacuum cleaner works with about 1200 watts and above, hard floor cleaners consume only 400 to 700 watts, which means an energy saving of up to 50%. In addition to efficient cleaning, health aspects also play a role. If you are allergic or sensitive to dust, you will know the problem: With normal vacuuming, not all the dust ends up in the bag, but part of it is swirled in the air you breathe. The sneezing stimulus is pre-programmed! When wiping with a hard floor cleaner, however, this problem does not arise because the dust particles are bound in the water.

A hard floor cleaner resembles a normal vacuum cleaner in shape and size. In fact, the optical differences are minimal. Instead of a dust container, the units have a dirty water tank. In this tank, the dirt and water are collected. The freshwater is drawn from a second tank. Depending on the model, this is located on the front or back of the handle. At the lower end of the handle are the floor nozzle and the cleaning mechanism. Depending on the make, these can be rollers or brushes. These cleaning tools are permanently supplied with fresh water via a nozzle during commissioning. The amount of water dispensed can be regulated by a switch on some models, while on others it is controlled automatically. During rotation, the moistened roller dissolves the impurities that are sucked together with the water into the dirty water tank and collected there. After cleaning, the dirty water tank is removed and emptied.

On most models, the freshwater can be enriched with a cleaning agent. This is particularly advantageous when removing stubborn dirt. Exceptions are special floor coverings such as cork or unsealed wood parquet, as the chemical additives can attack the surface. Some manufacturers offer their own cleaning agents which are adapted to the respective product line. A sample package of the cleaner is usually included in the scope of delivery. For some devices, commercially available cleaners can also be used. However, only a product that produces little foam may be used. However, the trade also offers hard floor cleaners that do not require cleaning agents. This is particularly attractive for people who are allergic to cleaning agents.

Due to these advantages and the ease of operation, the interest in hard floor cleaners has risen sharply among consumers. The trade has responded to the great demand by launching a range of different models to meet individual requirements. Although these cleaners are primarily designed for cleaning hard floors, some models are also designed for carpet cleaning. These multifunctional machines can be easily converted from hard floors to textile cleaning. The devices offered by the trade are extremely efficient and suitable for daily use in the private household optimally. While a few decades ago carpet was the most popular floor covering, today hard floors made of different materials are among the favourites. Sealed parquet, laminate, PVC, stone or tiles are becoming increasingly popular.

The floors are as different as the dirt. A fallen egg, scattered flour, animal food next to the bowl or damp earth adhering to shoes are everyday soiling, the removal of which takes time. With a hard floor cleaner, such impurities can be removed fast and effortlessly. A hard floor cleaner is also perfect for cleaning the increasingly popular laminate. In order for these wooden floors to retain their appearance, they must be thoroughly cleaned. Only in this way can intensive soiling, which can damage the material in the long term, be avoided. Also with natural stones and tiles, a hard floor cleaner is the equipment of the choice.

A hard floor cleaner is also the appliance of choice for natural stones and tiles.

Particularly in outdoor areas, stubborn dirt can quickly occur, which can only be removed with great effort and time without technical assistance. Joints and corners pose a particular challenge.

cleaning stains

Whether regular floor cleaning or large spring plaster - a hard floor cleaner is a useful helper that makes work immensely easier. Especially the cleaning of large surfaces is not only time-consuming but can quickly become a strenuous affair. Especially on floors with a relief structure, dirt can not only accumulate easily in the recesses but is also difficult to remove. Here a hard floor cleaner can do a very good job.

The hard floor cleaners offered by the trade differ slightly in their function. For example, there are devices with meterable water dispensers, cleaners with counter-rotating brushes or washable rollers. Although the differences are only minor, you should consider before buying which device is optimal for your individual needs. Meterable water output or short drying times can be relevant criteria here. Even small details such as automatic cable rewind or cable length can make themselves felt in everyday life. If you only notice during cleaning that the cable is a little too short or that the dirty water tank is difficult to clean, this would be annoying.

The cleaning device should also be selected according to the soil conditions and the type of dirt. Personal sensitivities should also be taken into account when purchasing a hard floor cleaner. If you or a member of the household suffers from allergies, a steam cleaner would be the appliance of choice. Since these cleaners follow a different principle, the use of chemical cleaning agents can be completely dispensed with here.

Hard floor cleaner with dosable water dispenser

For hard floor cleaners with dosing function, the liquid supplied to the roller or brush can be regulated. The regulation is done by a switch located in the handle. This allows you to conveniently control the supply during the cleaning process and supply as much water as necessary. This additional function can be extremely useful when cleaning different surfaces in the household. For example, it is useful to reduce the amount of water released by wood or textile surfaces. If, however, the balcony or terrace is to be cleaned in spring of the dirt that has accumulated in winter, additional water can make cleaning easier. Another advantage is that the drying time can be reduced by regulating the water output. As soon as the switch is no longer activated, the rollers dry the floor. This is particularly practical because a room is not only cleaned in no time at all but can also be walked on again quickly.

Hard floor cleaner with two counter-rotating brushes

Among the hard floor cleaners, there are models equipped with two counter-rotating brushes. The floor nozzle is equipped with two wheels that move in opposite directions. Due to this technology, the cleaning device can be easily manoeuvred over the floor. Light dirt or crumbs can be sucked up in no time at all. A further advantage is that the counter-rotating movements generate an airflow that dries the surface slightly when wiping. As a result, the overall drying time is noticeably reduced, so that a floor can be walked on again shortly after cleaning. The fast drying also prevents unattractive streaks, which sometimes have to be removed manually.

Hard floor cleaner with washable rollers

For some equipment, parts such as tank caps, brushes or rollers that become dirty after several applications cannot be cleaned easily. Cleaning the unit can then take a long time. You would rather spend this time on the freshly wiped terrace after work is done. The trade also offers hard floor cleaners that clean themselves. But even with the self-cleaning function, not all dirt can always be removed. If you have a pet, you will know how quickly the hair of your dear four-legged friends gets caught on the broom or brush of the vacuum cleaner. Therefore, it makes sense to choose a device with washable rollers. Some rollers can be removed and cleaned at 60 degrees in the washing machine. Some manufacturers also offer machines that clean the rollers automatically. All you need to do is refill the freshwater tank after cleaning. Not only are the rollers cleaned, but the pipes are also thoroughly flushed.

The steam cleaners work according to a slightly different principle. Unlike the hard floor cleaners, they, therefore, do not have a dirty water tank. Instead, most models have a floor cloth. The cloth is not only used for wiping, but also absorbs liquid at the same time. However, since the absorption capacity is limited, the floor cloth should be changed in the meantime at least during a longer cleaning process. The cloth can be easily removed and washed in the washing machine.
The steam cleaners make use of the physical property of water to evaporate at 100 degrees Celsius. The water is heated and directed under pressure to the floor nozzle. Due to the high temperature and intensive steam development, extraordinarily high cleaning power is achieved. This not only removes stubborn dirt, but also limescale and grease - without any cleaning agents at all. In addition, 99.99 percent of the bacteria that accumulate on the floor in a normal household are eliminated. With modern steam cleaners, the intensity of the steam can be regulated in several stages, so that pressure and steam development can be adapted to the dirt and soil conditions.

In view of the large selection of cleaners, some of which differ only minimally, the choice is sometimes difficult. It is precisely these small differences that can be decisive for a purchase. If you have decided to purchase a hard floor cleaner, you should pay attention to the details and additional functions. In addition to the question of whether you need a multi-function device that is suitable for both carpets and hard floors, you should also consider the size of the surfaces to be cleaned and the types of soiling. For example, a laminate floor is less cleaning intensive than stone tiles in outdoor areas. The capacity of the water tanks, range, revolutions of the roller per minute as well as maximum performance in watts should, therefore, meet your personal requirements.
If you find after the purchase that the capacity is too low and the tank has to be refilled permanently during a cleaning process, this would be extremely annoying. The size of the fresh water tank varies from model to model.

The size of the freshwater tank varies from model to model.

The cleaners offered by the trade have tanks between 400ml up to over 800ml capacity. The same applies to the capacity of the wastewater tank. Depending on the device, this can be between 200 and 800 ml. In terms of performance, the hard floor cleaners with wiping, suction, and drying functions are between 460 and 560 watts. In the case of cleaners with steam function, on the other hand, the output is considerably higher at approx. 1,700 watts.

A further aspect that is often overlooked when buying is transport and maneuverability. If the cleaner is also to be used in the holiday home or if it is to be transported inside the house, it is advisable to choose a handy appliance. The hard floor cleaner should also be designed for specific conditions. If the surfaces to be cleaned are angled or difficult to access, this should be taken into account when purchasing. Older people should also make sure that they can easily move the cleaner.

Ergonomic factors also play a role in this context. The device should therefore "fit" to you. While the cleaners hardly differ from their weight, which lies between 7 kg and 9 kg, the height differs occasionally by about 20 cm. This difference in size should be taken into account at the time of purchase. If there is a disproportion between your body size and the size of the device, this can easily lead to tension or back pain. The same applies to the handle height. On average, the hard floor cleaners have a handle height of about 115 cm to 122 cm. On some models, the height can be adjusted from approx. 100 to approx. 120 cm. This function is particularly useful when the appliance is used by different people in the household.

Also, the factor of comfort should not be neglected. This includes automatic cable winding and easy removal of the water tanks. Filling and emptying the tanks should also be convenient and easy. Last but not least, the design must please. Even if this aspect has no influence on the performance, the housework is more enjoyable if the device is beautifully designed. Depending on the manufacturer and model, various accessories are also available. Nearly all suppliers have detergents and storage trays, or
Storage containers in their repertoire. Sometimes cleaning brushes, special rollers, as well as parking and cleaning stations, can also be purchased.

Before you put your floor cleaner into operation, you should consider whether you should vacuum with a classic vacuum cleaner. This could be worth it, for example, if crumbs or many smaller particles such as sugar or flour have spread on the floor. This preliminary work facilitates the actual cleaning process. Then the water tank is filled. But make sure that the water does not reach the edge. To be on the safe side, you can use a measuring cup. For some suppliers, it is included in the scope of delivery. Depending on the condition of the soil or the type of soiling, you should add a cleaning agent to the water.

Depending on the condition of the soil or the type of soiling, you should add a cleaning agent to the water.

If wipes or rollers have been removed after the last use, they may have to be replaced. The appliance is now ready for use. The socket should be selected so that you can move easily with the cleaning device and achieve the longest range. After switching on, move the appliance forwards and backwards across the floor. In order to clean the floor thoroughly and efficiently, you should move the hard floor cleaner a little slower than a normal mop. This is especially true for stubborn dirt. Alternatively, you have to drive several times over the same spot.

After wiping, the first step is to empty and clean the dirty water tank. If necessary, you should also remove and clean the rollers or the wipe. If your machine has a cleaning station, you can also run the cleaning program. Since uneven floors can sometimes accumulate excess water, you should also check to make sure that there is no moisture build-up. Otherwise unattractive stains could form, especially on wooden floors.

In order for your hard floor cleaner to reach its full capacity and provide you with faithful service for a long time, you should clean it after use. This can be done either via the self-cleaning function or manually. But even with automatic cleaning, the floor nozzle should be dismantled at regular intervals and cleaned by hand. In addition to the floor cloth or the rollers, you should also check and clean the dirty water tank after several applications. With some brands, it can also be cleaned in the dishwasher. With normal use, it is also advisable to replace the bottom rollers after approx. six months.
