  • Cat owners' sofas can be cleaned ideally and precisely
  • Bread crumbs around the breakfast table are quickly removed
  • Spider webs in the corners of rooms can be quickly removed with the small tools

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Cleaning result
  • Handling
  • Capacity
  • Battery performance

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the hand-held battery vacuums. In these, the vacuum cleaners have to suck up approx. 100 g wood chips and 10 g paper shavings of different sizes on the carpet, long pile carpet and smooth floor. In addition, a hardness test is carried out for the carpets, in which the dirt is trampled on and vacuumed off. Meanwhile, the handling and ergonomics of the equipment are evaluated. In order to test the battery life, the continuous operation of the devices is simulated. The time required for recharging is then measured.

In order to exclude errors and to ensure the load of everyday use, each test takes place in several rounds.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

Many people buy a battery-powered vacuum cleaner because it allows them to remove hair, crumbs, etc. from the couch or carpet without having to turn on the "big" vacuum cleaner. The battery-powered vacuum cleaner, on the other hand, has the advantage that it can be used flexibly anywhere. This applies not only within your own four walls but also on the move. For example, it can be used to clean car seats. Thanks to modern technology, the battery life is now longer and the charging process shorter.

The battery vacuum cleaner is a small, handy device that can be quickly at hand when needed. As the name suggests, it is operated without a fixed mains connection. In the meantime, its performance has increased significantly. Thanks to the high-quality, technically advanced lithium-ion batteries, many modern battery vacuum cleaners achieve the suction power of a normal wired vacuum cleaner, but with a much smaller size and mobility. In addition, there have long been models without dust bags. However, the hand tools are not designed to clean larger floor areas.

Cat owners' sofas can be cleaned ideally and accurately.

They are rather intended additional devices. Battery vacuum cleaners are the perfect household aids for flexible applications. The market offers many different models. The differences can be seen in size, design, battery performance, and other details. Some devices also absorb liquids in addition to dry dirt particles.

The battery-powered vacuum cleaner works similar to a vacuum cleaner but has many positive features such as compactness, lower weight, the resulting flexibility, and lower volume. A big plus, of course, is that the unit doesn't need a power cord. The annoying tangle of cables, which is also a source of accidents, is now a thing of the past. Battery vacuum cleaners offer a lot of free space. It gives you unlimited freedom of movement. As soon as the battery is discharged, the suction power stops and the battery vacuum cleaner must be recharged before it can be used again. Battery vacuum cleaners are more energy-efficient than the current-operated models. However, in order to use the battery vacuum cleaner, the battery must first be charged. This takes a different amount of time depending on the device. Usually, it only takes a few hours. The associated chargers on many models can be mounted on the wall to save space. A practical holder is supplied for this purpose.

It can be used, for example, when crumbs need to be removed from the couch. The battery vacuum cleaner can also be used on the move, for example, to remove dog hair from the car seat or to vacuum off the sofa in the gazebo or motorhome. If you have ever cleaned your car with an ordinary vacuum cleaner, you will have encountered many problems. Only the cable and the hose can become an obstacle. Also, the bulkiness of the vacuum cleaner complicates the cleaning of the car clearly. With the small hand battery vacuum cleaner, it is no problem. Dust, dirt, crumbs or animal hair, all this is removed wirelessly.

Bread crumbs around the breakfast table are quickly removed.

Ultimately, the application possibilities depend on the design and size of the vacuum cleaner, so that they are different for a floor battery vacuum cleaner, which is also used for cleaning floors, than for a hand tool. Further differences regarding the application possibilities result from the respective suction power and the supplied attachments, which can be exchanged. Depending on the model, a crevice nozzle, for example, is included in the accessories. Among other things, it is suitable for vacuuming the computer keyboard. A brush with a rotating roller enables pet owners to clean even more thoroughly.

Battery vacuum cleaners have, depending on their size, design and performance, different areas of application. A distinction is made between the vacuum cleaner, which is also referred to as a rod or handle vacuum cleaner, the hand vacuum cleaner and the combination vacuum cleaners, which are a mixture between the floor vacuum cleaner and the hand vacuum cleaner:

Battery vacuum cleaner

The vacuum cleaner is suitable, just like the ordinary vacuum cleaner, for larger areas of all kinds, but is much more flexible in handling. The suction power is almost as good as with conventional models.

The handle turns into a long handle and on the floor, there is a brush or nozzle with which the carpet, parquet, laminate, tiles or other can be cleaned. There are no more annoying cables and also the search for a plug socket is void.

The radius of action is almost unlimited. Only the battery life limits it. The modern lithium-ion batteries, however, have sufficient capacity. The battery vacuum cleaners, on the other hand, have a running time of more than 20 minutes, often as long as 50 to 60 minutes.

This also allows several rooms to be cleaned wirelessly. Therefore, the battery vacuum cleaner for the floor can completely replace the conventional vacuum cleaner. It should have a telescopic handle. This can be adjusted according to your needs, i.e. it can be made larger or smaller. This allows back-friendly working.

We have already tested several wireless vacuum cleaners.

Rechargeable hand vacuum cleaner

The hand vacuum cleaner is very compact and is also called a table vacuum cleaner. It proves to be useful when, for example, crumbs or animal hair have to be removed or the boot of a car could be sucked out again. Special car vacuum cleaners often offer a 12V adapter for the car's cigarette lighter. Crumbs, lint, and dust are also quickly removed from inaccessible or hard-to-reach corners. You don't have to work with a scoop and broom, but can quickly fix small accidents. It is always ready to hand and provides quick help without you having to remove the larger vacuum cleaner from the cupboard. The service life is shorter and the suction strength is lower for hand-operated rechargeable vacuum cleaners. Although the container volume is smaller with the hand-held vacuum cleaner, it is completely sufficient. After all, the appliance is not designed for large surfaces. Most hand-held battery vacuum cleaners have a suction duration of up to 13 minutes, which is ideal for quickly eliminating a small mishap or cleaning the cushions. For some devices with high-quality lithium-ion batteries, the running time can also be more than 20 minutes.

Combi-battery vacuum cleaner

Combination battery vacuum cleaners, also known as 2 in 1 battery vacuum cleaners, also have a long rod. They are well suited for larger surfaces. When the handle is removed, you can also reach places that are difficult to access, because then you can hold a handy vacuum cleaner in your hands. Combination vacuum cleaners are used in the house or apartment as well as in the car or camper van.

Battery-powered suction robots as well as suction and wiping robots

There are also suction robots or a combination of suction and wiping robots. The robots clean the floor independently and usually return automatically to the charging station when the battery is low. A great advantage of these devices is their low height so that they can also clean under the bed or under cupboards. The suction and wiping robot is a special form because this device can not only vacuum but also wipe.

Rechargeable battery

A lithium-ion battery is particularly recommended. Other batteries are not as powerful or discharge very quickly, even when the vacuum cleaner is not in use. The suction power also depends on the battery: The weaker the battery is or becomes, the less power it will have. Many devices are equipped with NiCd (nickel-cadmium) or NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) batteries. Here the self de sedimentation effect can occur. The battery can, therefore, run empty even though the vacuum cleaner has not been used. It must, therefore, be charged much more frequently. You must also completely discharge the battery before it can be recharged. There is no memory effect with Li-Ion batteries. The batteries are also much lighter than the nickel models. There are also big differences with the battery vacuum cleaners regarding the running time. It ranges from 0.17 to 2 hours. The charging time also varies: Fully charging the battery can take 3.5 hours, but also up to 16 hours. The charging station should switch itself off automatically when the battery is fully charged. A charge control display is also useful. It is perfect to prevent unnecessary charging. The charging station is small, so it can be used on the go.

Suction

When buying you should pay attention to high wattage. The higher the wattage, the quicker and easier it is to clean the floor or another area. If the wattage is low, coarse dirt may not be sucked out. The range for hand vacuum cleaners is from 25 to 350 watts and for floor vacuum cleaners from 150 to 600 watts. The output is given in volts. Vacuum cleaners with at least 18 volts usually have sufficient suction power. For hand vacuum cleaners, 10 volts are sufficient, depending on use, while 25 to 32 volts may be required for demanding carpet care.

The capacity of the dust container

The volume of the dust container in which the dirt is collected is another criterion. As a rule, it is 0.3 to 0.5 litres for manual vacuum cleaners and 0.4 to 2 litres for vacuum cleaners with handle. The dust container should be easy to empty and it should be possible to clean it under running water.

Filter

The built-in filter should be a permanent filter because then you do not have to buy a new filter. A permanent filter can be knocked out and washed out. You can recognize models with allergy protection by the HEPA filter or the name vacuum cleaner filter for allergy sufferers. These filters prevent dust and pollen from getting into the air. They retain even small particles. Battery vacuum cleaners with bags are rarely offered. This saves the purchase of expensive dust filter bags.

Accessories and additional functions

There are extensive accessories for vacuum cleaners, for example, different nozzle attachments for furniture, upholstery, joints, animal hair or different floor coverings. Different nozzles make it possible to work on considerably more areas. They provide a more comprehensive cleaning result without requiring increased vacuum performance. Wet/dry battery vacuum cleaners are popular. As the name suggests, it is also possible to suck up liquids. This is ideal especially in a household with children or animals. A glass of water quickly falls over or moisture gets into the house. The suction cups are usually equipped with a rubber nozzle or other separate suction nozzle so that the liquids can be absorbed well.
