Artificial Christmas Trees12.06.2019
Christmas without a tree? - Unthinkable for many!
Like every year, many people are faced with the challenge of buying a Christmas tree that looks good, doesn't lose its needles too soon and isn't too expensive.
This year the trees are expected to become up to ten percent more expensive due to the dry season in summer. That's why many people are now considering an artificial Christmas tree. Of course, there is no one to whom this can be seen by entering the room. Nowadays there are already very good, detailed replicas. They are often shaped deliberately, irregularly, so that they look like a natural tree.
Natural or artificial tree?
Often the artificial firs look expensive compared to a real Christmas tree. If you consider, however, that you can use the artificial tree for several years, the price is relativized again. Real trees cost between 20 and 70 euros. One gets artificial trees starting from 25 euro, whereby one receives naturally for more money, a better quality and optics.
An artificial tree is only ecological if you use it for at least 10 years. In addition, you should pay attention to the material and buy a tree made of recycled plastic. Trees made in Europe are the best. Imported goods from China may contain toxins and may be harmful to health.
Just in time for Christmas we have tested the following Christmas trees for you:
The 180 cm high HOMFA tree is also easy to put together. The foot is made of metal and looks stable. Here, too, the branches are bent apart individually. This can take up to 40 minutes. Optically this tree does not convince. The branches look very artificial and from a distance the tree looks very shaggy and cheap. The balls are held by the branches, but hang slightly downwards. The price of this tree is 24,99€, far in the lower range.
We have tested the tree for flammability. However, this has shown that the branches melt and burn quite quickly. In direct contact with the flame, the branch catches fire.
RS Trade® supplies us with a 180 cm tall tree, the individual parts of which can also be easily assembled. The branches are also bent apart individually, which can take up to 40 minutes. Optically we classify this tree also in the lower area and would not place it in our living room ourselves. The branches are composed of two different fir species. This makes the tree appear dense, but the overall picture does not convince us. The balls are held by the branches. The price of this tree is 59.90 in the middle range.
We have also tested this tree for flammability. As soon as a candle stands under the branch, the needles melt relatively fast. When in direct contact with the flame, the branch begins to smoke strongly and thick smoke develops.
The 180 cm tall tree from FairyTrees is easy to put together. The foot, which is made of wood, can be fastened with screws. As with all artificial trees, you bend the branches apart individually, this can take 30 to 40 minutes depending on your taste. Optically the tree convinces by a natural arrangement of the branches and from a distance the tree looks natural and high-quality. The balls are held well by the branches and one could also hang heavy jewellery.
A negative aspect, however, is that the tree loses needles when it is unpacked - but for many there is no reason to buy needles in the house.
The price of the tree is 129,99€ in the higher range.
We have also tested this tree for flammability. As soon as a candle stands under the branch, only the needles at the tip begin to melt. This produces some smoke, but it stops surprisingly quickly. This tree is convincing and really flame retardant.
The 120 cm tall tree from Original Hallerts®, like the other trees, is easy to put together. Although the individual branches have to be bent apart, the arrangement of the branches is pre-defined by the tilting function. This tree takes up to 20 minutes to set up (which also depends on the size of the tree). Optically this tree is to be distinguished hardly from a real tree. The branches also look very natural on closer inspection. Also the balls are well held by the branches and one could also hang heavy jewellery. It was practical to be able to bend the branch layers apart and turn them to decorate. Altogether this tree looks very high-quality and long-lasting. The price of the tree is 109,99€, which is in the higher range.
We have also tested this tree for flammability. As soon as a candle stands under the branch, the needles melt relatively fast and begin to drip. Thus the flame went out relatively fast, however, the hot plastic can be also very dangerous.
All in all, the price plays an important role when buying an artificial tree. The more one spends, the more beautiful and high-quality the tree will be.
We also tested how flame retardant the different trees are.
We have compiled recordings of our tests for you in this video. There were differences especially in smoke development and fire speed. Real Christmas candles are cosy, but should be used with care. The fire brigade prefers to use artificial fairy lights.
None of the trees continued to burn alone in the test. An existing fire source was always necessary. However, if a fire has reached a certain size, the trees can hardly be saved and sometimes cause extremely biting smoke.
