We have defined practical requirements and the following test criteria in advance of the test:

  • Range
  • Transference
  • Control panel
  • Design

In order to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the baby monitors. In these, the range is tested with a distance of up to 25 m, as well as walls between transmitter and receiver. For devices that are not connected to sockets, an additional range test over three floors is made. Meanwhile, the quality of the transmission and the operation are evaluated. Depending on the device, all additional settings are checked. All baby monitors are also checked for transmitter overlapping with other devices.

In order to rule out errors and to ensure the strain of everyday use, each test takes place in several runs.

The test criteria receive percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

Before the baby is born, parents have to purchase a lot of things so their baby feels comfortable and receives wonderful care. In addition to diapers, baby carriages, changing tables, car seats, clothes and baby beds, a baby monitor is also very important. In this guide, you will find everything you need to know about baby monitors.

A baby monitor allows you to check on the baby outside the baby's room. You always need two devices: a receiver and a transmitter. As a parent, the receiver should be close to you to hear sounds from the baby. The transmitter should be placed close to the baby to transmit sounds by radio.

Nowadays, many baby monitors offer more than just a simple basic configuration; they also offer several other functions. These are described in more detail below.

Basic functions

The basic functions ensure the reliable supervision of the baby and the reliable notification of the parents or guardians.

Sound level indicator

An optical noise level display visualises the sounds received from the bedroom on the baby monitor. Normally, one or more LEDs light up when a sound is perceived and transmitted. This means that you are also informed if your baby makes a loud noise, if your surroundings are noisy or if the monitoring device is muted. This function is also particularly suitable for carers who suffer from a hearing disability when child sounds cannot be heard well or not at all.

Adjustable microphone sensitivity

With the baby monitor, whose microphone sensitivity can be adjusted by the user, primarily the sounds that actually come from the baby are transmitted. It is also possible to set the sensitivity level. If this level is set very high by the microphone, all baby sounds are constantly transmitted. If the setting is low, only screaming and other loud noises are transmitted. You can also choose between low and very high sensitivity levels. Some of the monitoring devices include a voice activation function. This activates the transmission and reception of signals only when a certain noise level is passed.

Volume control

To ensure that the baby can be monitored reliably in a noisy environment, it is possible to adjust the volume of the baby monitor flexibly and manually. On the other hand, the baby's noises are not transmitted too loudly. In addition, it makes sense for older people or those with hearing a loss to adjust the volume as desired.

Intercom function

The intercom function makes it possible for the guardian to speak or sing to the baby. Many guardians like this function a lot, because the baby knows the voice of the parent so he or she can comfort their child from near or far.

Vibration alarm

Some of the devices have a vibration alarm. This function allows the baby monitor to transmit child sounds even when the transmitter is muted or worn in a jacket pocket, for example. In addition, the alarm also sounds when the parent or guardian is in a noisy environment. The necessary devices for the vibration alarm are installed in the transmitter, which transmits a noticeable signal when the child is noisy. This also benefits people who do not hear well or who no longer hear so well.

Search function

A baby monitor with an automatic channel search function can even switch from one radio channel to another. This is necessary if there is frequency interference. This guarantees secure transmission of information between receiver and transmitter.

Night vision function

In the meantime, many video baby phones contain a night vision function. They are normally equipped with an infrared camera, which can also record the bedroom in the dark. This allows the user to receive black and white pictures of the sleeping infant at night or in the darkened room. Since infrared light is not visible to the eye, the baby can still rest undisturbed.

Range control

Most baby monitors have a range of control integrated. An acoustic signal or a control lamp alerts the supervisor before the contact between receiver and transmitter is interrupted. This ensures an immediate warning when the transmission range has been exceeded by the monitoring device and the baby can therefore no longer be supervised. This is very important, as otherwise the parent or guardian will not hear any possible sounds from the child.

Special functions

Some variants provide more comfort and safety in the children's room with additional functions.

Night light

Some of the baby monitors have a night light. This creates a comfortable atmosphere in the room so the baby can sleep well. In contrast to the bright light in the room, the night light is much more pleasant for the baby because it does not wake up so easily. As a result, the supervising person can switch on this light so the baby can be looked after. Normally, this function can be activated on the transmitter. In some models, it is also possible to control the night light from a distance using the transmitter.

Humidity sensor

If you want to check if the humidity is still sufficient for the baby, this can be done by a humidity sensor in the transmitter of the baby monitor. This measures the humidity content of the room air. If it is too low, the mucous membranes of the child dry out more quickly. As a result, the baby is no longer so well protected against pathogens. The value, which is measured with the sensor, is transmitted by the transmitter to the receiver, where it can be read. Usually, it is also possible to configure threshold values. If these values are exceeded or not reached, a warning is triggered and appropriate action can be taken.

Temperature sensor

In order to ensure good sleep for your baby, the right room temperature is very important in addition to humidity. Because if it is too high, the baby sweats and cannot rest so well. If it is too low, the baby begins to freeze. The perfect room temperature for a baby to recover should be 16 to 20 degrees Celsius. An integrated temperature sensor in the monitoring device makes regulation effortless: The transmitter measures the temperature in the bedroom. This appears on the receiver of the baby monitor. So the parent knows immediately if the room temperature is ideal and can possibly react accordingly. Some of the devices allow you to set minimum and maximum temperature values. If the temperature falls below or exceeds these limits, the supervisor is alerted.

Eco-mode

The Eco mode allows the transmission power of the baby monitor to be reduced in order to keep radiation and power consumption as low as possible. Some devices can even turn off the continuous transmission. This deactivates the radio connection. It is only switched on when a sound is heard from the baby. Please note, however, that the baby monitor does not transmit continuously due to the activated Eco mode. This also deactivates the range control.

Lullaby function

On the transmitter of the corresponding model, it is possible to play children's songs through the lullaby function, so that the baby can rest and fall asleep. The music can be played via the integrated loudspeakers. It is often possible to select whether only a melody or the entire playlist is to be played.

Supervision with the baby monitor gives parents the opportunity to do everyday things in life more easily. The baby can sleep while the supervisor cooks, operate the washing machine, do the ironing and whatever else needs to be done in the household.

The standby mode is recommended: Reacts to voice activation without exposing the baby to permanent radiation.

The baby doesn't have to be carried around all the time. The monitoring device also allows to be active in the garden or to have a short chat with the neighbour. Nevertheless, you remain within reach of the child. However, before leaving the house, it should be checked whether the batteries or rechargeable batteries are still charged.

What needs to be considered when buying baby monitors?

Most parents often have no idea which model to choose because the market for baby monitors is very large. The following criteria should be considered in order to help you find the right device.

Material and workmanship

Anyone who wants a good baby monitor should make sure that the material is excellently processed, as it should withstand children's hands. Especially in the phase when the little one is touching everything with its mouth, you can't always keep a device away from the baby. If strange smells emanating from the purchased baby monitor, it is essential to return the product to the supplier. You should note that the device is made of one piece. If it was manufactured out of up to three pieces, this is no problem at first. However, it is recommended not to use designs made of small parts.

Range

The range is also a very important factor when buying a baby monitor. Here, everyone needs to check for themselves what range the design should offer. It is important that the connection from the transmitter to the receiver is sufficient in any case if the parent wants to move not only inside the house but also outside and still want to monitor the resting baby. Models with ranges of up to 80 metres could cause problems here. For this reason, it is better to choose a baby monitor with a range between 250 and 350 metres.

Stability

It should not be forgotten that the monitoring device should be stable. Which means that it shouldn't break immediately if it falls from a normal height. Of course, each parent tries to be careful when operating the baby monitor. However, it is not always possible to prevent the model from slipping out of your fingers. If plastic parts splinter from the device, which are then found by the baby and put in the mouth, life is in danger.

Operating mode

There are differences in the mode of operation of baby monitors. It depends on the form of the power supply whether the monitoring device can also be used on the go without problems. It can be operated with batteries, rechargeable batteries or via the mains cable. It is possible to use the model that is powered by rechargeable batteries in places where no power outlet is immediately available. This allows the parent or guardian to move freely inside and outside the house. However, it should be remembered that batteries and rechargeable batteries only have limited running time. If the energy storage has been used up, the baby monitor may fail during use. It is therefore important to recharge the batteries or replace them. In the case of battery-powered variants, the corresponding unit should simply be placed in the intended charging cradle or charged with a mains adapter. If the supplier allows it, the battery-operated version can also be equipped with rechargeable batteries. However, the batteries can also be purchased with the appropriate charger. There are also still many devices, which are connectable by a plug socket to the electricity mains. These can be used permanently, except in case of power failure.

Audio baby monitor

The standard version for watching sleeping babies is audio baby monitors. They listen to the sounds in the quiet room and send them to the receiver the parent has with them. As already mentioned, the child sounds are transmitted by integrated light-emitting diodes, which is very useful, for example, when watching TV or when the dishwasher is running. In contrast to devices with video transmission, acoustic radios often offer a longer range because only the audio signals are transmitted. These require less frequency volume. If the distance between transmitter and receiver is large or the signal has to penetrate thick sides of the wall, it is recommended to choose an acoustic model because of the reliable transmission. Acoustic devices often contain many additional functions. Depending on the model, it is possible that the baby or parent units have a small LCD display that does not transmit images of the baby. This allows settings to be made easily and conveniently on the baby monitor. In addition, monitoring instructions can be displayed precisely in this way.

Video baby monitor

With the help of a video baby monitor, also known as a videophone, it is possible for parents or guardians to supervise the little one both acoustically and optically while sleeping. First and foremost, a parent can watch the baby from a distance through the video model: The baby monitor contains a microphone, a camera and a small colour monitor for image transmission. Camera and microphone are built into the transmitter, which is positioned in the direction of the baby bed. Some models come with a tripod so that the camera can be adjusted more precisely. The transmitter includes an LCD colour display. Even PC, Tablet or Smartphone can serve as transmitter and thus as monitor: In the case of baby monitors, the appropriate app must be installed on the mobile devices. However, one should be aware that the operation of the videophones is somewhat more complex because they usually contain more setting options and special functions for an ideal picture display. Because not only acoustic but also visual data is transmitted, it is possible that video baby monitors may have a smaller range than audio devices, depending on the wireless technology installed. They also consume more power and often have shorter battery life.

Baby monitors with breath control

The baby monitor with breath control uses a sensor mat in the bed to record the breathing movements of the baby. It detects a lack of breathing or only breathing pauses and warns with an acoustic alarm. This means that the piezo crystals found in the sensor mats detect the pressure transmitted to the mattress when the baby breathes out or in. These crystals generate an electrical charge on the mat surface. This is how breathing movements are registered. If breathing is interrupted for too long, the device detects this by the sensor mat and activates an alarm. If there is no alarm, the supervisor can assume that everything is okay with the baby. The sensitivity of the sensor mat can normally be adjusted individually on the baby monitor. It is important to know that the piezo crystals also register movements and pressure outside the bed. Therefore, it is possible that, for example, the spinning washing machine under the children's room or a passing garbage truck are perceived as movements, causing the alarm to fail. Due to the amount of data transmitted by the receiver and transmitter, the range of this model is small. The data volume also consumes a lot of power, which reduces battery life.
