  • The garment should be slightly damp or sprayed with water using a small spray bottle.
  • Wrinkles should be smoothed out. Otherwise, the garment will dry wrinkled.
  • Hairdryers that do not overheat very quickly are best.
  • Do not leave the assembly unattended if the heat is too high. The hot-air devices do not switch themselves off!
  • If the laundry is washed with a little fabric softener, a smooth result can be quickly achieved.

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Result
  • Handling
  • Scope of delivery

In order to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the ironers. In these tests, a damp, crumpled T-shirt is dried according to the manufacturer's specifications. The drying and smoothing result is documented with before and after images as well as with thermal images. The scope of delivery is checked for additional contents, such as hot-air devices. As soon as a hot-air device is included, the volume is also measured. The volume is always measured at the same distance of one meter.

We test if the heat is evenly distributed

In order to rule out errors and to ensure exposure to everyday use, each test takes place in several rounds.

The test criteria receive percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

It is no secret that most people don't enjoy working in the household because there are a lot of tasks that have to be done. One of the most unpopular activities is ironing: It is not only time-consuming but also exhausting to iron every single piece of clothing before you can put it in the cupboard.

For this reason, it may be worth investing in an automatic iron. This is also known as a shirt iron or ironing doll and, when used correctly, saves a lot of time and effort in household chores.

The most important thing first of all: With an automatic iron, not every type of clothing can be ironed. First and foremost, it is a machine designed to smooth clothes without creases. This could be sweaters, shirts, blouses or T-shirts. So for trousers, skirts, dresses and other pieces, you still have to use the good old iron.

Because a high-quality automatic iron is not a cheap investment, you should consider carefully whether you want to buy such a device. Without a doubt, however, it has numerous advantages, because especially if you have a high volume of ironing - because many people live in the same household, for example - the purchase can be worthwhile.

An automatic iron has many advantages that irons cannot offer. For example, business shirts can be ironed in a very short time. But the machine can do even more: you don't even have to wait until the desired garment is dry, but you can also put it over the iron when it's wet. Then it is dried and smoothed in a single step, which saves a lot of time. It is therefore particularly suitable for people who have little time to dry freshly washed shirts and then iron them by hand. While the ironer does the work himself, you can devote yourself to other tasks.

In addition, automatic irons smooth clothes without any blemishes. Everybody who does ironing by hand knows the problem that especially with thin or silky fabrics an unwanted crease can quickly appear somewhere and the shirt doesn't look perfect. This is not the case with an automatic iron, because it smoothes the fabric perfectly. This takes between 5 and 10 minutes, depending on the humidity in the fabric and the type of material. The garment can then be worn immediately or placed in the wardrobe.

Also practical: because shirt ironers can also be used in your own four walls, you don't have to take the laundry to a laundry or ironing service. You can use the machine around the clock as you wish - day or night.

Of course, the purchase of an automatic iron is not only suitable for private households: The appliance can also be very interesting for commercial use. Laundries offering an ironing service can do their work much faster with automatic ironers. An optimally smoothed garment requires a lot of care and time by hand, but with an iron, it only takes a few minutes. This means customers don't have to wait long and can take their garment back with them immediately.

Last but not least, this must be taken into account: If you only iron tops at home anyway, you may also save yourself the trouble of buying a space-intensive ironing board, an iron and other accessories.

The advantages of an automatic iron once again as an overview:

  • Perfect drying and smoothing within a few minutes
  • Great time and labour savings
  • Requires very little space for storage
  • Easy to operate

Since there is now a large selection of different models of automatic ironers on the market, it is important to make a comparison in advance. Basically, you can expect a dry and smooth result from all available ironers, but you should keep in mind that some models are more suitable for home use and others for commercial use. At home, you will usually dry and iron considerably fewer pieces of laundry, which is why you should opt for a smaller iron. They do their job just as well but are usually more compact and cheaper than professional ironers.

It is also worth checking whether an automatic iron is only suitable for shirts or can dry and iron other garments. There are a few models on the market where skirts and trousers can be attached, but these are the exception. In principle, you should think about which garments you want to iron the most before you buy - and then decide on a suitable model accordingly.

The basic functional principle of automatic ironers is always the same - no matter how the machine is designed. You put the wet garment over the iron, which consists of a gas pressure spring, a rod and a cover for the garment. For shirts, the top button should be closed, and the sleeves must also be rolled up over the sleeve parts of the shirt cover. Now you only have to tighten the shirt with the integrated tensioners and then switch on the automatic iron. Important: Of course a shirt should not be stretched unnecessarily. Therefore there are shirt covers of different sizes. Furthermore, the shirt can be fastened with additional tensioners or the collar or cuffs can also be fixed.

Now the manual part is fulfilled and the ironer does his work independently. After about six to eight minutes the garment is completely dry and wrinkle-free smoothed. The last step is to ventilate the garment with cold air - this is called crease protection. Now the shirt simply has to be pulled off and hung on a hanger or placed in the cupboard.

This shows that the operation of an automatic iron does not cause any difficulties and can be easily done by anyone without previous knowledge. All that is required is to connect the appliance to the power outlet. All you then have to do is fasten your clothes and press the power button.

However, since many irons have different functions and heat levels, it is still important to carefully study the manufacturer's operating instructions before using them for the first time. This will tell you what you need to pay attention to during use and will also tell you about any operating errors that you should not make.

With many modern automatic ironers, the drying time is set automatically. These devices have integrated sensors that detect the humidity level in the clothing and then decide for themselves how long the drying should last. Of course, a dripping wet shirt takes much longer to iron than a blouse that is almost cabinet-dried. However, for best results, it is recommended that garments are not ironed completely dry on an automatic iron. This is because the same principle applies here as for a steam iron: A little residual moisture is important so that wrinkles can be completely removed.

How to use an automatic iron - step by step

The use of an automatic iron is relatively simple: First, you fix the iron or put it on the floor. The shoulder pieces are then adjusted to the appropriate width for the garment. Special covers must be fitted for shirts. Now pull the wet garment over the shirt cover, close the top of the garment and tighten it.

Now switch on the device and flood the garment with warm air. After drying and smoothing, the garment is flooded with cold air and is then ready to be put on or hung on a hanger.

Nowadays there are many different models to choose from when buying an automatic iron. Both large and well-known manufacturers, as well as smaller unknown brands, offer the appropriate equipment. It is not always easy for prospective buyers to find the right automatic iron. Therefore it is advisable to get an overview of the assortment.

Good automatic irons are already available for little money: from around 40 euros you can get models that allow you to iron reliably and in good quality. Above all, it is important to ensure solid workmanship and a range of functions that meet your own requirements. Of course, the price range is open at the top and there are also ironers that cost 100 euros and more - but these are less intended for private use.

So every buyer should decide for himself how much he wants to invest in a good automatic iron. What is certain, however, is that a well-made and durable iron will usually last longer than an inexpensive model. Especially if you use the iron frequently, it should be resilient. Reviews from other buyers can also be a good help when buying: they give a realistic insight into the advantages and disadvantages of certain products, which makes the choice much easier.
