The Fitbit-Charge 3 covers all wishes of a hobby sportsman.
The waterproof watch without integrated GPS measures many values, e.g. calories, steps, sleep duration and quality, heart rate and much more. In addition, notifications from the smartphone can be received directly on the watch. Unfortunately, there are often problems with synchronisation, which affects the transmission of data and messages. The measurement of the values and the pre-installed training apps work perfectly.
- Many functions and data
- Numerous data measurements
- Interchangeable wristbands
- Very good instructions
- Good smartphone app
- 13 dials
- Notifications on the clock
- Frequent break of synchronization
- Notification functions are hampered by poor synchronization
- Contactless payment is not (yet) possible
- No own GPS
The Fitbit-Charge 3 offers many possibilities and intuitive operation. At the same time, synchronisation is always a problem.
The Fitbit Charge 3 is delivered in the robust and high-quality packaging typical for Fitbit. Detailed instructions are not included, as most of the functions are explained in the app. Changing the bracelets, which are delivered in sizes S and L, requires some skill. After the matching bracelet is attached, the watch must be recharged. This is very easy with the special charging cable for Charge 3, which slides automatically into the clamp of the battery. On the clock's screen it is indicated in different languages that the Fitbit App must be downloaded. It is available free of charge in Playstore/ AppStore/ Windowsstore.
The Fitbit app first requires access to some personal data in order to be used correctly. Before purchasing, everyone should be aware that the sharing of data is unavoidable. Otherwise they cannot be processed and therefore no conclusions about health can be drawn.
This is followed by very good instructions to help you set up your watch. Fitbit Charge 3 requires a Bluetooth smartphone with the Fitbit desktop app for full use.
After setting up the app and synchronising it with the clock, you can create it and use the first functions.
Steps: Tracking the steps works without any problems right away, when counting, it is noticeable that the clock counts relatively accurately. Every now and then the clock adds a few steps, but these are essentially the same as the actual steps.
When pushing a flipchart stand, the 50 steps were not recorded. A few steps were recorded when the dishwasher was emptied.
Measuring the distance travelled is only an estimate if the smartphone is not carried. This is because the watch does not have its own GPS.
Motion reminder: With the Versa you have the possibility to set an hourly step target. Your watch always reminds you to move if you haven't reached your hourly target yet.
Uplifted floors: Height measurement works perfectly. If you have climbed 5 floors, these are displayed exactly. Floors that I have climbed down have not been recorded.
Calories burned: In addition, the app measures your heart rate, heart rate zones, and deduces the active minutes. I personally find the heart rate zones very useful to avoid getting into too high a range during training. After just a few days, Fitbit can give you information about your general cardio fitness and how you compare with others.
Daily goal: With Fitbit Charge 3, you can set a daily goal. No matter if a certain number of steps, burned calories, active minutes, increased floors or a certain distance you have set as your daily target, your Fitbit will vibrate and congratulate you daily on reaching your goal.
Sleep phases: Charge 3 also records your sleep. This happens automatically. In the test my sleep was measured reliably. The Fitnesstracker also knows how to distinguish a relaxed film evening on the sofa from sleep and also short wakeful phases. It then tells you your sleep phases and helps you to gain new insights and optimize your sleep. You can also set a sleep reminder to get to bed on time and a silent alarm clock to get you out of sleep by vibrating.
Training: The watch supports you additionally during training by the exercise setting. With the help of exercises you can switch between different types of training. For cycling, hiking and running exercises, you can activate the GPS connection on your smartphone to measure the distance. Charge 3 itself doesn't have a GPS connection, so you'll need to have your phone with you.
Guided meditation: With the Fitbit Charge 3 you can also integrate short relaxation exercises into your everyday life. The device makes use of these changes in heart rate and recommends a personalized breathing pattern. In addition, there is direct feedback on the degree of relaxation and execution on the watch. The test shows that in a relaxed state with slow breathing exactly this feedback is actually reported. If I get into stress or become active, I get a corresponding feedback.
Notifications: basically a very good function. The desired app notifications can be activated in the Fitbit app and can then be read directly on the clock. No matter if SMS, Whatsapp, Outlook, Gmail, calendar notifications etc., the messages appear afterwards on the clock. In addition, it should soon be possible to reply directly with so-called quick replies (short pre-written messages). The messages can also be deleted or viewed again later. Since the synchronization does not run smoothly, the messages are rarely transmitted. In addition, you can have weather messages from your smartphone appear on your watch.
Important: With Fitbit you have to choose one app per category. This means you won't receive SMS messages on your watch if you've already chosen Whatsapp in the Text Messages category.
A distinction is made between the following categories:
Text messages, calendar apps, emails, phone apps (calls)
Payments: If you value this function, you should get the special edition with the Pay function. In Germany there are no partner banks yet.
When it comes to handling, the manufacturers of the Fitbit put a lot of effort into it, but there are still some shortcomings. After a few days I tried out the whole spectrum of possibilities and got along well with the watch in everyday life as well as during training. The bad synchronisation is really annoying, because I can't rely on the transmission of the messages.
Possibilities on Charge 3: The watch itself is easy to operate. Everything works quickly and intuitively. On batch 3 you can read most of the data directly. You can read the following data directly from the watch: Steps (this hour and today), distance covered, floors climbed
Calories burned, Active minutes/days, Heart rate, Sleep time, Water supply (if tracked on smartphone).
Battery: We tested the battery of Charge 3. The battery will last the promised 7 days of normal use. A full charge takes about 1.5 hours and is done with the USB charge clip.
The Fitbitapp: The app is very easy to use, intuitive and clear. The food database for tracking calories is expandable.
The synchronization takes half a minute and sometimes it takes minutes or longer until the synchronization takes place. Despite the Keep-Alive widget, which is activated to make permanent notifications possible, I often don't receive notifications on batch 3. From time to time the synchronization is not possible even after several attempts. Turning Bluetooth on and off, as recommended by Fitbit, does not work either. The message transmission with Charge 3 is not very reliable.
The Fitbit-Charge 3 is small and in a classic unisex design. The workmanship is of high quality.
The bracelets are offered by fitbit in different variants. (Other manufacturers e.g. on Amazon offer even more designs.)
The dials can be loaded onto batch 3 in various variants. 13 possibilities are offered.
The manufacturers make a lot of effort with the instructions. The instructions are very simple and understandable.
