  • Only dry hair should be curled
  • Use heat protection spray
  • Do not hold the coiled strand against the curling iron for too long
  • After curling, treat your hair e.g. with hair oil
  • Adjust temperature and setting to your hair structure

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Result
  • Temperature control
  • Overall impression
  • Ergonomics

In order to be able to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the curling irons. First, the scope of delivery and functions are checked. Before the first test runs are carried out, the required warm-up time is stopped.

We work with the highest temperature level, which is measured first. If the devices have several stages, their temperature is also measured.

The curling irons are used according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Handling, user-friendliness, and ergonomics are evaluated. It is also tested how efficiently the curlers are wound and whether there are any potential safety risks. Finally, the results of the devices are evaluated.

In order to rule out mistakes and to ensure the strain of everyday use, each test takes place in several rounds.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

Many women with straight hair desire perfect curls. There are very different variations in the choice of curls. Depending on which type of curl you choose, there are different care needs for the hair, because styling and working on the hairstyle demands the hair structure.

This is especially the case when heat is involved. Because curling irons are the most commonly used tool for waves, large curls, beach waves or small angel curls, certain preparations and follow-ups must be carried out in order to protect the hair and preserve the selected hairstyle.

Curling irons should not be used right from the start. The first thing to do is to prepare the hair correctly so that it gets the right care for its structure. The structure of the hair is different for each person and therefore the choice of care products is also different. Those who care for their hair well know their own hair structure.

Know your own hair structure

Hair can be thick, thin or fine. While some women with thin hair often lack volume, others tend to form frizz. Extreme of this kind need not be inevitable. Also, the hair can only show tendencies in one direction as well as in the other. It is important to be able to assess one's own hair correctly.

If heat plays a role, oils and heat protection spray are important care products to counteract dry hair and to maintain a lasting healthy hair structure.

Adjust temperature and setting to hair structure.

Preparation and follow-up

  • In damp hair: Curls can appear dull and dry. Therefore, the hair can be treated with oil before the actual hair wash. The oil should be gently massaged into the washed and still damp hair, leaving out the hairline. Greasy roots can be counteracted in this way. On the other hand, the hair tips tolerate a decent portion of moisture. Here, hair oil can be used generously.
  • In dry hair: If the oil is used in dry hair, it should be massaged into the lengths in just a few drops. This procedure is particularly useful for keeping the curls that have already formed defined. But beware: Too much oil weighs down the hair and the curls hang out over time. Too much friction, when treated with oil, creates strawy and dishevelled hair.
  • Before shampooing: In order to optimally prepare the hair, it can be treated with hair oil before shampooing. The oil should be applied half an hour before shampooing to keep the hair smooth and shiny.

Argan oil: Argan oil is a well-known means for the care of the curls. The home of the Arganbaum lies in Morocco, where from the fruits of the tree the valuable Arganöl is won. It is rich in vitamin E, which makes the hair shiny. The oil also contributes to the health of the scalp.

Avocado oil: Avocado oil is excellent for coloured hair and curls. It is regarded as the miracle nutrient par excellence. The oil contains unsaturated fatty acids and important vitamins.

After curling, treat your hair e.g. with hair oil.

When working with the curling iron, heat is also used and not too scarce. Here the strands need a reliable protective coat to protect them from damage. The heat leads to the removal of water from the hair fibres. The result: the hair dries out.

The hair can be treated with different products for heat protection. Here, too, it is important to know one's own hair structure. Heat protection products are available as:

  • Spray
  • Liquid
  • Cream

When treating hair strands, the various products can either be massaged into damp hair after shampooing or into dry hair. The applications vary from product to product. Therefore the instructions of the care product have to be followed exactly.

In principle, hair products such as conditioners or conditioners should not be used for shampooing. The ingredients weigh down the hair, which causes the curls to hang out again quickly.

Are the hairs washed, heat protection and suppleness are also provided, but what happens next? Before the curling iron twists in the strands, the hair should first be thoroughly combed. For twisting, the hand must be able to divide the hair into individual strands.

A hairspray that is only intended to fix curls should not be used before using the different curling irons.

After treatment with the curling iron, the hair must be able to cool down completely. For this purpose, the twisted strands are simply stuck in place.

There are different curling irons for each hair type. If you choose the right curling iron here, you don't have to worry about ever having to say goodbye to it again. After all, this happens quite often. There are no disappointments.

Here there are different curling irons, which can be used for long as well as for short, thin or thick hair.

Curling iron for short cuts

The typical length of the hair in a short cut is about the length of the ear. Short hair needs very narrow curling irons. With the narrow curling iron, the hairstyling of the strands is more precise and targeted. If you have particularly fine hair, you should also use a narrow curling iron. This allows fine hair to be heated more evenly.

Curling iron for hair with bob length

Very narrow curling irons for hair with bob length are not suitable. Due to the length of the strands, they can be wrapped several times over the rod. This leads to a superposition of the hairs on the rod. The result: There is no even heating. The tips experience more heat.

Conical curling irons are the right choice for hair with bob length. Towards the ends of the hair, the curly strands become narrower so that they do not hang out as quickly.

Curling iron for shoulder-length hair

Who wears the hair on shoulder-length, needs a medium-wide curling iron. Here the contact area is larger. The strands can be processed more evenly and in a shorter time than with an extremely narrow curling iron. The hair is protected.

Curling iron for long and thick hair

Who has long and thick hair knows the problem: The strands do not heat up properly in the upper layers, while the lower layers are exposed to strong heat. The curls don't last long because the hair doesn't get evenly warm.

The work can take forever to treat the specific layers of hair with sufficient heat. To counteract this problem, a wide curling iron is recommended. The strands are on a wide lying surface and can be heated evenly in this way. Here, too, the hair is spared due to the shorter processing time.

Curling irons for very long and thick hair

Basically, the following applies: If the lying surface of the curling iron is large, the twisting of the divided strands is also faster. For this reason, very long and thick hairs need a very wide curling iron, which prevents the layers of hair from overlapping and heating up unevenly.

When the curls are twisted and perfectly positioned, they need support. No woman wants a longer haircut without seeing a correspondingly long-lasting result fulfilled. But how can the curls be prevented from hanging out?

The right follow-up is the be-all and end-all here. If you don't storm out of the house after a long day's work, you can be sure that the magnificent hair cleaners still fit well.

The right curling iron plays an important role in the long-term preservation of curls. Many women swear by a cone-shaped curling iron, because the smaller the curls at the ends of their hair, the longer they last.

After the curling iron treatment, the hair must be able to cool down completely. For this purpose, the twisted strands are simply stuck in place. Then the fingers shake out the twisted strands carefully and loosely. Under no circumstances should the hair be brushed through afterwards.

After the hair strands have cooled down, different products can be used for a sufficient hold. In the ladies' world, most women use classic hairspray. In principle, this applies to the use of supporting products: Less is more!

Therefore, hairspray should only be sprayed lightly onto the curly strands from a distance of at least 20 cm. If hair wax is preferred, only small amounts should be used. They should be applied very carefully in the lengths. Too much hair spray, texture spray, mousse or hair wax can weigh down the hair. This also applies to other curling products.

Cleaning the curling iron is a MUST. This is often forgotten. As soon as the curling iron has left the mains plug and cooled down, it should be wiped off briefly. Residual particles of the products used and dark deposits will otherwise burn into the curling iron. This damages the ceramic coating and the curling iron will soon be history.

Cheap products should be avoided when buying a curling iron. Most of them do not have a ceramic coating and are made of a material of inferior quality, which is not durable and can also damage the hair. An investment in a high-quality device is worthwhile.

Curling iron with ceramic coating: A curling iron with ceramic coating has a gentle and gentle effect on the hair. This type of coating prevents the hair from sticking or even sinking. The material also has an effect on heat development. Due to the ceramic coating, the heat development is uniform. The curls remain longer over the day.

The LCD display and temperature settings: A digital display with several temperature setting options shows which temperature is currently set when hairstyling the strands. It should be possible to adjust the heat precisely and in several stages.

Convenience and operation: The curling iron should be handy and easy to use. It makes sense to buy a curling iron with a clamp. This makes working with the individual strands much easier. In order to cover a wider range of curl types, the curler should have several different attachments. A woman does not always feel like having a hairstyle. Different variations of curls are often seen.

Diameter: The right diameter is decisive for the durability of the curls. Here it depends on the respective hair structure. It is important that the individual strands do not overlap and that the hair can be heated evenly.

You can also consider an automatic normal curling iron. If you haven't tested automatic curling irons yet, or don't know what they are, you can find out here. You can find out which models are the best in our large automatic curlers test.

How do we test at

Live and authentic: We get the devices into our Hamburg test laboratory. Here we take a close look at everything.

Each test is preceded by an extensive search:

  • Which suppliers are on the market?
  • What current products are there?
  • What are the comparison criteria?
  • What tests are we going to run?
  • What is the test procedure?

When everything's settled, we'll bring the devices to us. For each product the test procedure, the measured values and product properties are documented in detail. We create photos and videos. We evaluate the results for you, summarize everything in a test report and calculate the test grade.

Have fun!
