  • The hair should always be well combed and dry.
  • The individual strands should always be 2-3 cm wide.
  • It is always important to use heat protection.
  • Always pay attention to the hair structure. It depends on which temperature and which time setting should be used.

In the run-up to the test, we defined practical requirements and the following test criteria:

  • Result
  • Safety and security
  • Speed
  • Ergonomics

In order to evaluate these criteria, we have defined several tests for the automatic curling irons. First, the scope of delivery and functions are checked. Before the first test runs are carried out, the required warm-up time is stopped.

In addition, we check how long it takes for the devices to reach a temperature of 210 °C. The temperature of the devices is also checked. The curling irons are used according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Handling, user-friendliness, and ergonomics are evaluated.

In addition, the efficiency of the curling process and potential safety risks are tested. Finally, the results of the devices are evaluated and how long the curls last.

In order to rule out errors and to ensure exposure to everyday use, each test takes place in several rounds.

The test criteria are given percentages depending on their importance. The final score is then objectively calculated from the test criteria using an algorithm.

Product selection

Our product selection is based on an observation of the current market. In addition to popular branded products, we also include insider tips in our selection. Criteria such as price and range of functions are an important factor for us. The test field is also determined by analysis and evaluation of customer reviews and external tests (e.g. Stiftung Warentest).

The devices are purchased anonymously or lent to us by the manufacturer. Dealers and manufacturers have no influence on the tests and our evaluation.

As soon as new relevant products come onto the market, our test field is extended by these. The new products go through the same test as the already tested devices.

Enchanting curly hair not only looks incredibly feminine and beautiful but also gives a very special radiance. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with natural curls and is forced to do it themselves. Nowadays, however, this is no longer a problem due to the ever more advanced technology. This is particularly easy with a curling iron. This article explains what to look out for when buying, caring for or using a curling iron, and which curling iron is ideal for each hair type. With these tips, everyone can be guaranteed to achieve success and conjure up breathtaking curls.

You can also consider a normal curling iron.
If you prefer the classic models, or if you want to have both variants at home, you can also find out more about curling irons. You can find out which models are the best in our large Curler Test.

A large number of manufacturers and models does not really make it easy to find the right curling iron for you. However, there are some general criteria that should be fulfilled in any case in order to have as long a pleasure as possible with the selected curling iron. In addition, curling irons should conjure up beautiful curls without damaging the hair. Below are some criteria that should be taken into account when making a purchase decision:

Manageability

A large role in the purchase should be the operability. Lighter models are definitely the better choice here because the hands don't get tired so quickly after a longer period of use. If the curling iron has a clamp, which is especially advantageous for beginners, it must be easy to loosen. If there are additional attachments in the accessories, they should also be easy and quick to replace. In order to also guarantee optimum hold, it is ideal if the curling iron has a snap-in function.

Quality

Good devices are characterized above all by a good heat regulation. We recommend models that have as many temperature levels as possible for setting or are infinitely variable. Very cheap curling irons are not recommended, especially not for thin, sensitive or stressed hair. These may burn the scalp and damage the hair.

In addition, particularly inexpensive models do not have a ceramic coating, which protects the hair and prevents any damage. Coatings of titanium, Teflon, ceramic or tourmaline are advisable. In addition, it is important that the curls last longer and look natural. With cheap brands, it is unfortunately often the case that the hair damage is clearly visible and the look does not last that long.

Diameter

If you like small ringlet curls, you should choose a model with a small rod diameter. The larger the desired curls, the larger the diameter of the rod must be.

Temperature

Most curling irons offer temperature settings between 100 and 180 degrees Celsius. Medium to high-priced models often offer a targeted temperature setting. This aspect is particularly advantageous because the temperature can be lowered for stressed or very fine hair. Should the hair structure improve again, the temperature can be easily raised again without having to buy a new curling iron.

Manufacturer

There are various manufacturers whose branded products not only delight professionals but are also becoming increasingly popular with ordinary consumers. These manufacturers regularly bring high-quality and long-lasting curling irons to the market. These brands include Babyliss, GHD, Remington, Braun, Comair, and Carrera. The models of the manufacturers mentioned convince with gentle and comfortable hairstyling. It should be said that it does not necessarily have to be one of these manufacturers, because there are also cheaper manufacturers that despite the low price deliver good quality.

Versions

There are many different types of curling irons on the market. On the one hand, there are devices where the hair is twisted by hand to create curls, and on the other hand, there are models that twist automatically at the push of a button. Especially with thick, long hair, it greatly simplifies operability when the individual strands rotate automatically onto the bar. This also speeds up the application process.

Power cord

It is important to choose a curling iron with an appropriate length of the power cord. In addition, it should be equipped with a swivel joint so that the device can be used flexibly.

Safety devices

The selected model should, in any case, have an automatic safety shut down after 30 or 60 minutes. It is also recommended if the curling iron is supplied with a stand. The rod can be placed on this stand without hesitation. A heat-resistant base, a heat-resistant styling glove, and an insulated storage bag should also be included.

In addition, the device should have an automatic voltage adjustment, especially for frequent travelers. This allows the curling iron to be used worldwide.

Price

The price range between the different devices is enormous. Those who value their hair and their appearance should not necessarily choose the cheapest model. In the end, it costs the user more money because the life span is limited. Especially if the curling iron is to give pleasure for a longer time, you should reach a little deeper into your pocket. For a model, which implements the essential functions such as temperature regulation, durability, care protection, handling and operability well, fair enough a little over 30 euros must be spent. However, there are no upper limits, and the price-performance ratio should be right in any case and not just paid for the brand.

Warranty

The service provided by the manufacturer should also be taken into account when purchasing. The individual warranty services may vary greatly. The longer the guarantee is granted by the manufacturer, the better.

Shortly before curling the hair, it is unfavourable if the hair has been washed shortly before. Ideally, the hair should be washed the day before. In the meantime, the sebaceous glands produce so-called lipids, which form a protective shield around each hair. This thin greasy film makes the hair easier to shape and grip. Conditioners also make the hair heavy, which makes the curls sag again much faster. If the hair is washed shortly before curling, make sure that it is completely dry. Moisturizing shampoos containing argan or almond oil, for example, are particularly suitable for washing.

The hair should always be well combed and dry.

It is very important to use heat protection before using the curling iron. The easiest way to do this is with a heat protection spray, which is simply sprayed onto the dried hair. Such hair care products are like a kind of lack of protection around the hair and protect it from possible heat damage. They also help to ensure that no moisture is extracted from the hair during curling. A moisturizing conditioner is advisable so that the hair can recover more easily after exertion. This ensures that the surface of the hair is sealed again and retains moisture. Cures should also be used from time to time to repair the damage that has already occurred or to prevent it from occurring in the first place.

In order to keep the curls as long as possible, you can always use a hairspray after twisting them in. It is also helpful to use a spray hardener, which is worked into the hair before. Especially with heavy and long hair, the curls hang out very quickly. In such cases a step-cut helps to make the hair a little lighter. The durability is also increased by fixing the curls after twisting with a clamp until the strand has cooled down.

The individual strands should always have a width of 2-3 cm

.

If a spray hardener or texture spray is used before twisting, the hold is also improved. Meanwhile, there are also a lot of special hair products, which improve the durability and are exactly adjusted to this problem. Experts also advise, for example, to blow-dry the hair briefly before twisting it in, so that more tension comes into the hair and the hairstyle lasts longer afterwards.

A good curling iron doesn't do much work in the course of its life. As a rule, it is sufficient to wipe the appliance with a damp cloth. Before, however, always pull the plug and let it cool down. The curling iron should never be kept under running water or cleaned with strong detergents. The use of such cleaning agents may even cause damage to the coating.

It is important that hairspray is only used after the lock has been screwed in and not before. This prevents soiling from remaining on the curling iron which burns into the hair due to the heat.

If the appliance is really dirty, it can also be gently cleaned with a damp cloth with fine detergent. However, it is important to make sure that there are no more detergent residues on the appliance. If the model also contains a styling brush attachment, this can be cleaned with soapy water. However, make sure that the curling iron is no longer connected to a power source and that the attachment has cooled down.

There is a curling iron for every hair type and structure. Below is an overview of which device is suitable for which hair:

1. Curling iron for short and extremely fine hair:

For hair up to the ear or short hairstyles, a curling iron should be selected with an extra narrow rod to achieve a great curling effect. With a slim rod, light beach waves can also be created with such a hair length. If you only want a volume effect with short hair, you can choose a slightly thicker rod. Even with extremely fine hair, a thinner curling iron is better so that the hair is heated evenly.

2. Optimal curling iron for bob length and shoulder-length hair:

A very narrow curling iron is not recommended for the bob length, as individual strands can be wrapped around several times and therefore overlap. The tips are then heated more than the lengths. It is advisable to use a slightly thicker rod or a so-called conical rod, also known as a conical curling iron. With these two variants, the strands can be wrapped less often and do not overlap. The conical rod also has the great advantage that the curls become narrower towards the tips and are therefore lighter. This ensures long durability and an even result.

3. Curling iron for thick, long and/or curly hair:

Anyone who has curls by nature knows that the hair is often unruly and lacks moisture. Especially long and thick hair is not heated properly anymore due to the frequent wrapping of the rod at the top layer. This greatly reduces the durability of the curls. Curly, long or thick hairs therefore absolutely need a wide curling iron. As the lying surface of the hair is enlarged, the hair is heated more evenly. If you only want to perfect the natural curls, you will also benefit from a wide curling iron, as curling takes less time, which in turn protects the hair.

4. Curling iron for extremely robust and long hair:

An extra wide curling iron is ideal for very long and robust hair. The individual strands are heated evenly, which prevents the curls from hanging out quickly. In addition, the hair is protected by the extra wide lying surface, as this ensures that individual strands are not exposed to the heat several times.

In January 2019, Stiftung Warentest also evaluated the automatic curling iron, resulting in a narrow winner and two clear losers. A total of 4 devices were judged: The StyleCare Auto Curler BHB876 from Philips, BaByliss Curl Secret 2 C1300E, the Keratin Protect Auto Curler CI8019 by Remington and Rowentas Expertise So Curls CF3710.

Both Remington's and Rowenta's automatic curling irons score the worst with a rating of 5.0. The Curl Secret 2 C1300E by BaByliss was only just beaten by the winner with a 1.8. Philips StyleCare Auto Curler BHB876 took first place with a 1.6 - both devices were rated "Good".

For the evaluation, 26 test subjects were ready, who were styled by a hairdresser. Both judged shine, combability, brittleness of the hair, as well as hairstyle volume. The durability of the hairstyle was reassessed after four and eight hours. The styling result was included in the final score with 55%.

Furthermore, 11 other test subjects tested the handling (25%) of the curling irons under the supervision of experts. The evaluation included warm-up time, temperature control, instructions for use and twisting the hair in and out.

During the technical examination, which accounted for 10% of the final mark, a 400-hour endurance test was carried out on the appliances: 15 minutes in operation, 15 minutes not in use. In addition, the devices were dropped five times from a height of 90 cm onto a tiled floor.

The automatic curling irons from Rowenta and Remington failed at the safety point (10%). The hair that had been wound up was not always released by the devices and had to be pulled out by the test persons in pain.

Four automatic curling irons, including the Keratin Protect Auto Curler CI8019 from Remington and Rowentas CF3710 So Curls also passed our practical test. Our tester found the same problems with these two devices as Stiftung Warentest - hair could only be removed reluctantly and with pain after winding up. First and second place in our test went to Philips and BaByliss products.
